Cepstral Voices 4.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Announce time bug still persists.

If you have speech set up to announce the time on the hour, set it to a Cepstral voice, you cannot change it to any other voice. So be careful. I had chose "Dog" and now my Mac barks every hour! And there's no way to change it. But other than that, these are the best voices you get for the Mac. A huge leap over the built-in voices. [alert admin]

The Unarchiver 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Terrific! Finally a reason to junk Stuffit Expander

Unarchiver is super fast and unstuffs EVERYTHING... ZIP, RAR, GZ, and Stuffit SIT files! I highly recommend it! [alert admin]

Strata 3D CX 5.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Seriously dated interface. For hobbyists only.

I used Strata when it was one of the first PowerPC 3D programs for the Mac nearly a decade ago. I recently upgraded my copy to the current version. I was shocked to see how little the program had grown. While it touts new features like photon mapping, caustics, and multiprocessing, it has serious usability issues. Any 3D program that doesn't support industry standard three-mouse buttons is seriously limited. Likewise, there aren't any W-E-R keyboard shortcuts for scale/ rotate / pan. Navigation requires several trips to the toolbar each time you want to change your view. It also doesn't have keyframe snapping, so aligning the playhead to specific keyframes and making modifications is tedious. There is no motion graph. Its modelling capabilities are likewise forgettable. It also doesn't support multi channel or depth map rendering. If you've used Cinema 4D, Maya or After Effects for 10 minutes, you realize how lacking this application is in a real production environment. On the upside, it does have some of the easiest to use Metaballs. It has a pretty speedy raytracer (especially using multiple processors). It also has a great library of drag and drop textures. Outside of its metaball engine, I could never recommend this program to anyone but the Bryce/Poser home hobbyist crowd. [alert admin]

Logitech Control Center 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Great Mac support for Revolution

Logitech FINALLY has per application support of mouse buttons! Yay! Every button on the new RevMX is supported on the Mac with this driver. Quick switch for applications, Spotlight search, and the click-by-click/free spinning scroll wheel (which is a little gimmicky, but actually useful). [alert admin]

Snapz Pro X 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Not *true* Universal Binary?

I notice Ambrosia is careful to just mention "Intel Compatibility" and never say "Universal Binary" (or use the UB logo) with this latest version. What gives? [alert admin]

GarageSale 2.2b7 (Mac OS X)

Terrifc ebay listing assistant!

Much has been said about iSale vs. GarageSale. iSale has a better UI and feels more like an iLife app than GarageSale does. So it gets points there for ease of use. However, iSale is more expensive, requires icky internet activation, and has a super-restrictive node-locked license (no installing on your laptop *and* your home tower without having to pay double!). GarageSale is fun to use and the built-in template designs are top notch. They instantly add a professional look to any listing. The ability to use .Mac (or any web address) for your photos is a big plus. The application itself needs a bit of UI polish and would benefit from an "easy mode" to help newbies in step-by-step instruction. Even so, GarageSale is a great helper for anyone who sells even a modest amount of items on ebay! It makes it so fun, you'll be looking around the house just to sell something! [alert admin]

Portable Gimp.app 2.2.11 r1.0 (Mac OS X)

A 72MB "portable" program??

I think they seriously need to reconsider the concept of portable if the program weighs in at 72MB! Can you say "bloated"? [alert admin]

DYMO LabelWriter 7.5.1b2 (Mac OS X)

Best, most Mac-friendly label printer

The Dymo LabelWriter is a terrific device. Their free software for their labellers is also top notch. It's fully Mac integrated with Address Book so it's a snap to make a label for one or 100 addresses. The program loads fast and prints within one second of pressing the print button -- very impressive! With this latest release, they show they are commited to brining a Universal Binary version to Intel Macs. [alert admin]

iSale 3.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Very restrictive, node locked single user license

Everyone considering purchasing iSale should know that your license only allows ONE install on ONE machine. It's node locked, so you can't move it from different computers in your home, or have a copy on your laptop and one on your home Mac. Or install it on a new Mac if your old one dies. For that reason alone, the price is pretty high, in my opinion. I really don't appreciate *shareware* being so restrictive... this isn't Adobe CS2, Final Cut Studio or Maya, Mr. Developer guy! Why are you so paranoid and greedy? (Even Adobe allows for dual laptop/home installs of CS2 for each license!) Nowhere on the retail packaging or your download is this super restrictive license revealed. Only after you buy and install it! Shameful and sneaky! [alert admin]

Seriously dated interface. For hobbyists only.

Just a side note... considering that the newest review before this one was 2 1/2 years ago shows just how creaky this program is.
