Netscape X 9.0.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Looks like they fixed the VersionTracker issue.

As of version 9.0.0.4, Netscape works with the VersionTracker website again. Still no word about what caused the problem, though. [alert admin]

Netscape X 9.0.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Netscape 9.0.0.2 and 9.0.0.3 trouble

The trouble with version 9.0.0.2 and 9.0.0.3 appears to be related to the cookies that Version Tracker places on the browser. I have found that if I clear the VT related cookies from my copy of Netscape 9, it will load the first VT page I browse to. However, any subsequent pages will give me an error 404 or 500. (The Version Tracker website will place cookies in your browser as that first page is loading.) To me, this suggests that those two versions of Netscape 9 deal with cookies differently to earlier versions, in a way that breaks compatibility with Version Tracker's cookies. I'm not 100% sure where the problem lies with this, but I have tested Firefox 2.0.0.9, and it is working without problems. As Netscape 9 is based on the same code as Firefox 2, the problem appears to be with Netscape 9 and not Version Tracker. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.4.27 (Mac OS X)

Uncooperative disk image

For those who are having trouble mounting the disk image, here is a workaround. Open the disk image in Disk Utility, and use that software to convert it. Converting the disk image will make a version of the image that will mount. I don't know why the original isn't mounting, but hopefully the developer will be able to fix that in the next version. SuperNZB 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)

New versions

For those who have an interest in SuperNZB, it may be interesting to know that it has been updated several times since version 1.2. It is now at version 3.0.3 for PPC and 3.0.2 for Intel Mac. If you intend to upgrade to the newer versions, please read the upgrade instructions carefully. The format of the preferences file for SuperNZB changed for version 2, and it will need to be converted, in order to work with the newer version. A conversion utility is also available to download from the developer's website. As for the price. It would appear that TechSono have dropped the regular price to £40. I quite agree that $40 is still a bit steep for a utility that is pretty much a one-trick-pony. Admittedly SuperNZB does an admirable job of downloading from newsgroups, based on the information in a .nzb file. However, considering that software that does this and much more is available for less money, I feel the developers should either reduce the price, or add functionality. Alternatively they could offer bundles. My only real gripe with SuperNZB, other than price, is that it causes my system to 'pause' every time it writes a part to the hard drive. This doesn't seem to be related to any spike in processor activity, or even a helper application being launched. This may be due to it being a RealBASIC application, but hopefully it can be resolved. SpotlightIndexer 0.2.2b (Mac OS X)

Download appears to be corrupt

Just a quick noted to mention that when I attempt to mount the .dmg file of SpotlightIndexer 0.2.2b, I am presented with an error message that says there is no mountable file system. [alert admin]

RDC 0.4.3 (Mac OS X)

Bug stomped!

The bug I mentioned in my previous post has been fixed! Now I'm able to log in and use this software. It feels faster and more responsive than TSclientX, which is it's nearest Mac OS X sibling. (It also relies on X11.) Definitely recommended! [alert admin]

RDC 0.4.2 (Mac OS X)

One bug?

I have been trying to use this application. It connects to the Terminal Server fine, but the keyboard mapping seems to be all over the place. There don't seem to be any controls to select which keyboard map it should use. Basically, when I try to type, the wrong caracters are used. I'm using a British keyboard, in case that is relevant. Ircle X 3.5a5 (Mac OS X)

Coming along nicely.

Ircle has been my IRC client of choice for more years than I care to admit. That isn't to say I haven't tried others. However, I always come back to Ircle for one reason or another. I would probably be the first to admit that it's not the prettiest interface around, but it is functional and allows me to customise it to suit my needs. However, I would want to suggest two improvements that Onno could consider for future releases. Firstly: Develop a plug-in system to extend the feature set. Scripting is good and well, but being able to only load one script at a time does limit the choice of features that can be added. As yet, I haven't found any single script that covers all the capabilities that I want. Being able to load multiple plug-ins which add one feature each would get around that. (Yes, I know I could write my own script, but that would presume that my scripting abilities are up to the job.) Secondly: Allow for a single-windowed and tabbed GUI. This doesn't mean that you have to throw away the existing GUI. Simply allow the existing windows to live within another window, and to be chosen by tabs. (While providing users the choice of operating within a tabbed, non-tabbed or mixed GUI.) Other than that, I am pretty happy with the direction that Ircle is moving. Stability is improving on Intel Macs, and there are some promising feature developments in the pipeline. Keep up the good work! [alert admin]

Any progress?

The closest I got was a comment option on the Netscape Navigator download page. I left a message about this problem. Not sure if anyone received it or anything. No confirmation was received, even though I provided them with a valid email address.

Shouldn't be called a 'beta' if it costs $30

It seems to me that you're not paying for the beta version. You're paying for a license to use ALL versions of this software. (Yes, there are previous versions available that are NOT beta.) The license doesn't limit you to only use the beta software. However, you are free to do so if you choose.

You might find it interesting to know that the license doesn't just give you access to the most recent edition of the software, which you rightly point out is beta. It also lets you use all version 3 editions. These are most definitely not beta. Ircle has a very long heritage, going back more than a decade. To dismiss it as merely a beta is doing the developer a great disservice. Also, it is hugely unfair to claim that Ircle…

Bad version

They appear to have had a bad link on their download system. Now they are sending out emails to all people who have purchased version 11, and are providing information on how to download the correct one.

Apple Says update is for

Yes, because the Software Update download contains ONLY what is needed by the computer downloading it. The file that is linked on this page, contains data for all the Intel Macs.

Even better than that!

Permissions repair is rarely needed either. Since 10.3, Mac OS X has been sufficiently well behaved not to need a permissions repair, except when something else goes wrong. (For instance when a badly written app, such as the old LimeWire installer, does something weird with permissions somewhere.) Personally, I only repair permissions after an installation. And even that shouldn't be necessary. (But I still do it... Mostly out of habit.)

Universal Binary?

Indeed, the TextEdit.app actually reminds me of Word 5.1. Even though we're talking nearly 10 years ago, I think it's worth noting that these days 80% of Word users, use about 20% of the features. (Not to mention the fact that TextEdit.app can open and edit most simple Word files.)

Oh, and scrollbars would be good, for those with smaller screens.
