Fish 0.92 (Mac OS X)
I was expecting something along the lines of the beautiful Marine Aquarium screensaver. But the fish in this pond are untextured, low polygon baby sharks. I don't want to be too critical of it. It's cute, it's free and its a work in progress. [alert admin]

SoundandLights II 1.5 (Mac OS X)
This has to be one of the most inefficient pieces of coding. I mean 6.3MB for a still photo and sound effects? There's no way this should be more than 200K! It's like one of those weird interactive art exhibits....except nothing happens! [alert admin]

Red Pill 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)
The best "Matrix" screensaver! ![]()

I've tried three other Matrix screensavers, and Red Pill is clearly the best looking. I love the attention to detail: The raster lines, the rotating streamers, the 3D depth cueing. The use of OpenGL actually makes Red Pill more advanced than the stricly 2D effect used in the movie. Download and give it a try. [alert admin]

MatrixGL 2.0 (Mac OS X)
This is a good screensaver if you want that "Matrix" effect. I still prefer the saver called "RedPill". MatrixGL is too bright and overlapping text streams are too vivid green. RedPill has a grungier, dirtier Matrix green look. Give them both a try and see which one you like best. [alert admin]

Ram Disk Creator 1.0 Beta (Mac OS X)
I question the usefulness of RAM Disks on Mac OS X. Since virtual memory is always on, and Mac OS X automatically and dynamically adjusts the amount of RAM to each application as needed, I would suspect that a RAM Disk under Mac OS X will acutally cause the system to access the Hard Drive more, not less. You can't stop Mac OS X from paging out to virtual memory (aka writing to the hard drive). The bigger your RAM Disk, the more HD work your Mac will have to do. [alert admin]

BIAS Peak 4.1.1 (Mac OS X)
Still no long file name support...
Um, hello!? I would like my file names to be longer than 32 characters. This is a odd restriction that harkens back to its Mac OS 9 days. This is the future calling and it's Mac OS X. [alert admin]

Apple Xgrid Technology Preview 2 (Mac OS X)
An interesting technology preview
Keep in mind that this is a *technology preview*. It makes one hopeful of future media products (Compressor, FCP, Maya, After Effects) that can automatically harness spare cycles from other Macs. [alert admin]

Tomato Torrent 1.0b8 (Mac OS X)
I won't "review" beta software, so I'll just offer this note: The genuine Mac OS X BitTorrent client can download files more than 2X as fast. A good start to a good project. But more work is needed on the download speeds. [alert admin]

LimeWire X 3.8.7 (Mac OS X)
Limewire great, but Aquisition is better
I paid my money for Limewire Pro, but later I moved to Aquisition after trying both out. I always get more hits and faster downloads with Aquisition -- and it's a much more Mac-like interface. Limewire was a post-Napster product, but it hasn't kept up with the times. Plus, there are never any release notes! They never say what has changed from previous versions! [alert admin]
