Alarm Clock Pro 7.9.1 (Mac OS X)

A Deluge of Updates

I have to say that as a registered user, I'm certainly getting my money's worth from the developer. Josh must be beavering away 24/7 to keep these updates coming. I say 'registered user', but actually, I don't do much using of this programme anymore, just download the updates and file them away. I thought about installing this latest update, but there's an AppleScript on the disk image that says it has to be run if upgrading from before version 7.7.7.7.9. My latest installed version is seven point six point something, so I guess that includes me, but there's no information about what the script actually does and trying to open it up in Script Editor to have a look at the contents generates a confusing error message so, er, maybe I'll just leave it. Again. [alert admin]

The Music N*** 1.7 (Mac OS X)

What's In a Name?

This is a nifty piece of software, a fact that is becoming obscured by all the knee-jerk reactions to its humorously descriptive name. Perhaps Americans have a different relationship with the word Nazi to British folk. Over here, we don't automatically assume that using the word indicates approval of Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist party's policies against Jewish and other non-aryan peoples. (Similarly, we don't automatically associate the word 'Jew' with the murder, oppression and forced relocation of Palestinians.) It is, after all, more than sixty years since Hitler and his armies were defeated. The word has subsequently become dissociated from its original form as an abbreviation of 'National Socialist' and now simply means someone with prejudiced and inflexible opinions that they want to impose on everybody else - hardly an endorsement of the original users. Why give the word power and status by getting all screwed up about it? There are far more serious, contemporary and relevant issues to get your knickers in a twist about. Around 1500 years before Adolf started doing his thing, another bunch of war-mongering Germanic Aryans called 'Vandals' were making themselves unpopular in mainland Europe and North Africa. They too were defeated, and no-one seems unduly disturbed by the fact that the word 'vandal' now means someone mindlessly destructive. Surely we don't need to wait another 15 centuries before we are free to use 'nazi' as a derogatory term without bringing a bunch of hysterical, hand-wringing fools out of the woodwork. [alert admin]

Travis Poker Timer 1.7 (Mac OS X)

Download Won't Unstuff

I'd like to try this poker timer, but there's something wrong with the file. Clicking the 'download now' button opens a big bunch of code in a new browser window. Control-clicking and choosing 'download linked file', gets me a broken stuffit archive that thinks it's a text file and can't be used or unstuffed. I followed the previous poster's advice and went to take a look at Poker Tournament Hero, but found it inadequate, inefficient and buggy (full review posted on PT Hero page). So, please, Mr Developer, get your download sorted so that I can check this out before my next big poker game on saturday... [alert admin]

Poker Tournament Hero 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Clunky, Inflexible and Buggy

Previous reviewer 'versiontrackerfree', who awarded this program five stars, is rather too easily pleased. It is in no way a 'great Macintosh product', and most emphatically does not 'rock'. PT Hero has potential, but that's all. The current release is extremely limited in what it can do and falls well short of being worth the asking price. Setting up blinds and antes is straightforward, but there's no way to automatically reduce the intervals between blind increases in the later stages of a tournament. The players and payouts setup dialog has fields for an astonishing 30 different prize levels, handy if you're running a major international tournament, but wildly over-specified for any kind of home game (and let's face it, that's where you'll find this app being used – not in casinos). And if you're involved in a series of home tourneys with a regular crowd, you might want to put actual players names in, and keep a record of overall progress. No way to do any of that with this baby. The option to change the audio alert to one of your own is welcome, because you're unlikely to want to keep the 'bing-bong' door chime provided. There is a facility for scheduling breaks, but they all have to be separated by the same number of blind increases which, again, may not be what is wanted by the end user. The sixth and final stage of setting up is the appearance/display setup dialog, which is probably the most disappointing and poorly-conceived aspect of PT Hero. There is no option to change the font used for the display. The only way to disable unwanted sections of the display is to move them to a position that's off the screen. There's a bottom line of constantly changing text giving various tournament stats that can't be moved at all – you're stuck with it whether you want it or not (which I don't – it's distracting, and there's no way to change the fairly useless selection of info displayed, aside from adding your own pointless line of text to the mix). Anyone who wants to save more than one set of tournament settings is out of luck - there's no way to do this - you have to manually reconfigure everything every time. Anyway... at last you're ready to click the 'start tournament' button and WHOA... the thing comes up full-screen, and although you can toggle this off, it will always start in full-screen mode. On my two-screen setup, when I tried running it on the second monitor it blacked out most of the main monitor and covered it with ugly graphic artefacts... very nasty indeed. Once the tournament is in progress, the main display is no more than a timer and reminder of what the blinds are. There's no convenient toolbar that allows changes in the number of rebuys or players to be entered – instead, you have to open the 'director's panel' to change the number of players remaining, and a further needlessly complex dialog to log each new rebuy and recalculate the prize pool. What I'd like to see alongside the timer is a list of named players, with two buttons beside each name – one for registering rebuys, one for clicking when knocked out of the tournament. Maybe PT Hero will be worth a look one day, but right now it feels more like a version 0.0.1 beta than a finished product. Don't part with your money. [alert admin]

Microsoft Messenger 5.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Does what it says on the tin.

This software does everything it claims to do and does it efficiently. My son is certainly happy with the way it lets him chat to his PC-using friends on the family Mac. Microsoft does not charge for it, and has no obligation to continue supporting it, so there's no real justification for many of the negative reviews posted here. Anyone really desperate for the Windows-only features should consider buying themselves a cheap windows box and a Belkin switcher that lets them run a PC and a Mac side by side using the same keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, etc. That's what I did. And it's great... just a tap on the foot-switch to toggle effortlessly between XP and OS X. (Not so useful if you're on a lap-top, though. Gaffer-taping an iBook and a Dell Inspiron 1300 back-to-back doesn't quite cut the mustard, all things considered.) [alert admin]

CopyPaste + yType 2.7.1 (Mac OS X)

yType & Forums

Little problem with yType... when it autocompletes an abbreviation that has a full stop/period after it (ie the word comes at the end of a sentence), the full stop is not remembered. I was going to bring this up on the Script Software forums, but the CopyPaste forum is looking a bit neglected right now, and most of the recent activity there is spam. It's a bit like visiting what was once a pleasant neighbourhood and finding it derelict, overgrown with weeds, and strewn with used condoms and dirty syringes. I know it can be an onerous job keeping the spammers out, but I really think a little house-cleaning is in order. [alert admin]

Can Combine Icons 3.0.5 (Mac OS X)

Problems with Tiger

When combining two icons in OS X 10.4.x, the second icon is not added correctly to smaller display sizes of the combined icon, usually just showing as a blank space. I have contacted the developer about this issue. [alert admin]

Where Is M13? 1.02 (Mac OS X)

Useful for Star Gazers

Here's a simple and effective app that does exactly what it says. According to the developer's site, a fuller-featured version is on the cards, and I shall be watching out for it with considerable interest. NB — I originally had problems launching this handy little programme (damaged archive, apparently), but a swift and friendly response from the developer soon got me up and running. [alert admin]

The installer for this latest version also throws up a 'failed to install' dialogue, but the updated app seems to get installed, and to work correctly. So, what's missing????? [alert admin]

Wow...

Nothin' like a good debate to warm the blood. Of course it's ridiculous to suggest that the Iraq war is all about Oil, just as it's ridiculous to suggest that it's about fighting terrorism. Only Cheney knows the full story. What really irks me is the complaint about gas costing three bucks a gallon - it's currently about four times that in the UK, mainly due to the huge government tax rake-off (I know our…

You crazy...

Perhaps, Tyler, you are unaware that in modern English parlance, the word 'Nazi' has come to mean a prejudiced and intolerant person who is determined to impose their will upon others. Its use here is not part of a white supremacist plot.

Poor marketing strategy

That's ridiculous, Vic. Trivialising the word 'nazi' does not trivialise (or endorse) the holocaust. And Jews were not the only ones to suffer at Hitler's hands, btw. They just had the best PR.

Censored my arse!

It seems that the word 'c-o-c-k-e-d' got bowdlerised by VT's profanity police in my previous comment. May I point out that the word in question is a completely legitimate term meaning 'tilted', 'skewed', or 'out of alignment', and was not intended to convey the meaning 'penetrated repeatedly by a throbbing tumescent rod with bulging veins up the sides and a big purple bell-end'. Sorry for any confusion.
