ASM vs X-Assist (Freeware). Which is better? Why?
Tried ASM, and it looks just like X-Assist, which is freeware. Can anybody who has used both, please point out why ASM is different/better? Otherwise check out X-Assist: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10519 [alert admin]

Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1 (Mac OS X)
Version 3.1 restores from SparseImage Damn Quick ![]()

I like this update ! I too started using superduper when CCC 2.3 wasnt being upgraded. SD creates really robust sparseimage's, especially when you are doing an incremental backup. But the "restore" speed of SD was pretty slow, relatively. then CCC 3.1 came out today. So I did a restore from a SD sparseimage, and used CCC 3.1 to put in on a new 8 core 2.8 GHz MacPro. Damn, the restore just flew, fastest I've seen yet. Just to test, I used this same SD sparseimage backup, and used SD to restore. Took nearly twice as long. Go figure? Thanks Bombich, I like it. But I am going to continue to use both, as CCC 3.1 held up pretty well in this new comparison. [alert admin]

MegaPhone 1.5 (Mac OS X)
OH, this Megaphone, not the other....
Sorry, I thought this was for the MegaPhone application that was my favorite back in OS 8. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/17077 Used to be a way of turning your Mac into a speakerphone, back in the day... So has the original name/company been abandoned, as "The MegaPhone" company webpage hasnt been taken down yet ? [alert admin]

ChangeShortName 1.3 (Mac OS X)
Have used versions 1.2 and 1.3 over a hundred times (I am a Mac admin at Large major TV/Movie Studio, and have made donation for this software...), but I gotta admit, version 1.3 seems like a downgrade in real world use... Don't get me wrong, I love this app, and recommend it, but I recommend version 1.2. Version 1.3 has a better interface, but sometimes (over 50% 0f the time), it will just hang, and not do its thing. then sometimes it will show the available names twice or even wrong names. And finally, sometimes the permissions are all wrong on the dmg file and main app, and correcting permissions sometimes helps it launch, but other times, you will just get incessant bouncing in the dock. So back to version 1.2 for me. Version 1.2 rocks. Version 1.3 is beta, but developer is cool, and I am sure a version 1.4 will come out that will work in Leopard also. And I will definitely use and endorse it again, then. [alert admin]

Leopard 10.5.1, iMac Core Duo. Worked first day, but very next day useless. EXC_BAD ACCESS (SIGBUS) KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x000000000000001 Reinstall didn't work, and didn't really seem to be worth advanced level troubleshooting. Can not recommend. But I reinstalled what I used last year, MacLampsX, and it still works fine, also in Tiger. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Mac OS X)
Looked forward to 10.4.11, but watchout... Safari 3.0.4 is crash on launch city. Removed all Internet Plugins, removed all Input Managers, and reinstalled 10.4.11 Combo updater, Crash on launch, Crash on Launch. Cant make heads or tails out of the crash log either. That sucks. I played by all the correct rules, (repair permissions prior and after combo install) and now unusable on 1 of my Macs. On another, works perfectly, setup nearly identically. This sucks [alert admin]

As dreaded, Mac OSX 10.4.11 kills TD 2.3.9. 10.4.11 contains Safari 3, which is known to change dock characteristics that render TD unusable. To the developer: Your product was always the best, I loved that you did it without doing illegal commands the way haxies do. I realize this may be the end of the line for TD in its current form, but I always looked forward to using your product, and Thank You for all the development you did do for us all these years. You were(are) the best gui enhancement, and I always appreciated you. [alert admin]

Fetch Art for iTunes 1.3.11 (Mac OS X)
Search specific Playlists, Not entire Library (Less errors)... ![]()

I noticed this same propensity for cryptic error messages, but same fix works: When lauching Fetch Art, don't have your entire iTunes "Library" selected (though Fetch Art seems to choose that by default on first launch.) Instead, choose any Playlist instead. Fetch Art will only try to analyze and fetch art for those items... Unless I chose this way of using it, I think Fetch Art trys to get info on my video's, radio stations, podcasts, whatever, etc, chokes on unexpected info, and then spits out those error messages, as it is probably assumes music files with some sort of ID tags within ... So now it seems to be working correctly for me, though I am keeping my old 1.2.7 Installer just in case,,, [alert admin]

Perian 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Gonna Try it without Pref Pane, but keep components...
Whether you love or hate Perian, I absolutely have to applaud the effort. So I nstalled 1.0 and noticed that all the components reside in Library/QuickTime (I chose the install for all users option...) Of course I immediately noticed the Pref Pane installation.. Then I set up its pref pane to Not automatically look for updates, and output to stereo (older Mac, 2.1 spkr setup),, Now I want to experiment with removing Pref Pane, but keep components.. I did NOT choose the uninstall Perian option, I simply control clicked on the pref pane, chose the uninstall pref pane only option, and restarted. After restart, the Perian components (codecs) seemed to still be there. Seems to be working so far, seems to better handle XviD, even though QuickTime doesnt list the codec properly in the info window, but its playback seems smooth.. Though developers have their reasons for wanting to have pref pane install, I hope this trend doesnt grow too much.. [alert admin]

Mmm... 2.1.3.10... release 14 Dec 2007
As I understood it, the 2.2 series is for Leopard. And the first few 2.13 versions were betas, so the update would recognize the 2.11 series as the latest.

"In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who enters an established community such as an online discussion forum and intentionally tries to cause disruption, often in the form of posting messages that are inflammatory, insulting, incorrect, inaccurate, or off-topic, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others. Trolls can also be existing members of such a community that rarely post and often contribute no useful information to the thread, but instead make argumentative…

Hello. Can we just delete that .plist file manually? Must we use the uninstall? I deleted file manually, and seemingly have no problems, but will I have one in the future, because I did not use the uninstall application? Thank you for Onyx!

What We NEED: Outlook2003, IE6/7, and WMP10/11//12
Active X content enabled sites that dont perform correctly in Safari, nor Firefox (its AJAX almost works). Its proietary, its enabled in tons of pages and old sites, and it NEEDS IE for Windows to Work. And you CANNOT fool/spoof it by using developer tools or Debug menu enabled to respond back as IE6 Windows in Safari, though it sometimes works on a limited basis... I see this all the time, and…

StuffIt Expander: Always on top
A few big bugs that remain in Stuffit: Often, it will expand a valid archive into an empty folder. AND, sometimes it will claim that it will take 6571375361163134 hours to expand an archive (though it takes a little less than that..) . AND sometimes, it will try to expand an archive, finds the archive to be corrupt, and will stop:Then when quit Stuffit, and you throw away this potentially corrupt…

Combo Updater vs Delta Updater
I got mixed results with TD 2.3.8 and OSX 10.4.8. One one Mac, I used the Delta Updater (from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8), and Dock remained transparent ! On another Mac, I used the Combo Updater (any version of 10.4.x to 10.4.8), and that Mac's Dock went back to ugly OEM, and TD 2.3.8 wouldn't work anymore. Great app, but I wish there was a trick to keep it working (ie: the developer…

Kills Front Row for Non-IR Macs

How is this different from the freeware Services prefpane?
Differences I noticed: Standalone app versus preference pane. But neither one does the holy grail of Services Menu Editing: I don't want/need "Chinese Text Converter"... ( I realize there are a billion plus people who might want this, but why HARD ENCODE it Against being removed by these types of tools?

Version 1.0.1 Update to Front Row Hacked Unsupported Systems...
Hi: Its best we let die this specific individual thread about applying the 1.0.1 update to the Hacked Front Row for non supported Macs. It ain't going nowhere, and there will be future hacks to future revisions, I am sure (this kinda reminds me of the days we would hack iTunes 2.04 to run on unsupported OS8). And as a parting bit of advise to those who think they killed their hacked 1.0…
