VideoLAN client 0.4.6 (Mac OS X)
a bit tidying up in the interface and needs to be up to date with codecs but other than that the best way to open files which quicktime simply refuses to play [alert admin]

Apple QuickTime 6.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I can set the "file exchange" control to handel .dat files as mpeg's and open them in Quicktime. This way it's no problem for Quicktime player to open them. In OS X I can't find no such feature so I have to rely on 3rd party software to play VCD's. Come on Apple, it ain't that hard to let Quicktime respond to files with a .dat extension! Furthermore, I'm not the only one who thought playing DivX files with Quicktime3 would be as easy as doing it on a PC with Media player. However, I still have to doctor all divx' before I can play them correctly. Major letdown! It would be neat if Quicktime would not be so sensitive to type-codes when handling files. It should be able to check the header of a file to see what format it is. [alert admin]
