MenuMeters 1.4b1 (Mac OS X)

It's only been a few days, but I was lost with MenuMeters

Thanks to Alex for responding so quickly to make MenuMeters compatible with Snow Leopard. I didn't realize how much I depended it to monitor my system. Hope everyone will hit his donation button and give him a few bucks for this invaluable little tool. [alert admin]

Retrospect 8.1.150 (Mac OS X)

Much improved and very powerful

Like many others, I've been waiting for years for an overhaul of Retrospect. Version 6 and its crashy behavior and clunky interface with (seemingly) hundreds of separate windows drove me crazy every time I had to reconfigure or use it. Retrospect 8 is a huge improvement in almost every way. The interface is much easier to navigate. The separation of the 'engine' from the control console is a great idea (once you get used to it). Setting up scripts and monitoring what's happening is infinitely easier. And so far for me, it just works. But perhaps best of all, after years of neglect and stagnation, it appears that EMC is actually taking this product seriously. They've moved quickly to fix bugs and respond to criticism of the initial release. I also commend them on having reasonable upgrade pricing; it's so rare these days. Retrospect is a powerful backup tool. If you're looking for one-click backups, this ain't for you. But if you have multiple computers and terabytes of data to backup and keep track of, it's a great too. PS They are not kidding when they say G4s will be slow when used as a server for Retrospect 8. I have a 1GHz MDD that I've used as my main backup server for a while, but it's straining under the load. The actually backups work OK, doing about 450 MB/minute. But when scanning a large volume or matching to existing catalogs, it takes a very long time. It will work fine for me until I can replace that backup machine, but it's something to consider when planning your backup system. [alert admin]

QuicKeys X 4.0b5 (Mac OS X)

The most useful Mac tool ever; now even better

Version 4 makes a number of welcome improvements to existing features, and adds a very nice and extremely useful text expansion feature. Now I don't need to run a separate tool for that functionality. I'm really looking forward the iPhone app which promises to let me control QuicKeys remotely. These guys were Mac pioneers and continue to do great work! If you need a tool for automating and taking control of your Mac, you should check out QuicKeys. There's really nothing else like it. NeatReceipts 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Indispensible tool; keeps getting better

This is an excellent receipt scanner and software for the Mac. The first version (of the software) had some rough edges, but 1.1 shows tremendous improvement. It's great to be able to buy a product like this where they actually show some attention to the Mac version. The scanner itself is extremely compact, USB-powered and works great. Has made managing my expense reports about ten times easier than before. [alert admin]

3.2.1 still not 64-bit!

As MacManux mentioned, there is no significant advantage to 64-bit for an application like EyeTV. I'm sure we will eventually support 64-bit operation, but there is no great urgency. Mike Evangelist Elgato

Dang, they need an edit button on these comments. I of course meant to type that I was lost -without- MenuMeters, not -with- it.

No no no no

There is no 2GB file size limit. I have many recordings that are over 15GB. If you have a tuner that does software encoding (like the EyeTV Hybrid) the quality will depend on the settings you use and the speed of your Mac. On slower Macs, the quality is reduced to enable the encoder to keep up.

Disappointed ... Sure

Elgato definitely appreciates our existing customers. That's why the upgrade is 50% off the full price.

Sorry about triple post

It appeared to fail the first two times I tired to add my review, but apparently it didn't. I alerted the admin so hopefully they'll remove the dupes.
