Impressive

It's been my observation that most of the "AOL sucks" people out there are people who have 1) either never actually used it or 2) are just geeks (probably Windoze users too) who don't like anything to be simple.... I say this with some authority having been a computer tech for 5 years, a 1000 node NT/Win2k network admin for 5yr, and a certified Computer Education instructor for 15yr. Anyway, when I say "impressive" I mean it. As another reviewer wrote, "I'm my dad's computer tech". I concur. This is exactly the type of "lite" client that older users have been begging for... ease of use, with just the few 'important', large and easy to see icons, for the services they want: e-mail, web browser, Pictures (to see their grandkids) and for some, instant message. As for the tech aspects of the program, the way that it makes use of Apple supplied products (Mail, Address book, iChat, Webkit-based browser) is GREAT. AOL is also the only free service provider I know of who allows SFTP access to your online storage/website and lets you link to files in it from other pages without filetype restrictions or forcing pop-ups, banners ads, etc. XM-Radio is free, e-mail is free, 2 Gb of x-drive storage is free, on Windows it has the #2 ranked online anti-virus/security rating, and nearly ever service has been available in a "mobile" (Palm/phone) format for a few years now. Sheesh people, what in the H3LL do you want for free? In the days before ubiquitious wireless in hotels etc. AOL was the only company I could count on to have a local dial-up (limited 1-800 if needed) in every major (and most minor) cities. For the nay-sayers, it's time to forget the past and look at the present. I think the AOL Mac team deserves giant Kudos for this product! And no, I don't work for AOL, and even when I paid for the seervice I didn't like or use the AOL client (except to dial in) But the simple fact is that if it wasn't worth $20/month I would have used another service, but there were no others (in my rural midwest area) that had the package of services I needed for that price or less. Give these developers a pat on the back and encourage them to keep supporting Macs! (and keep it SIMPLE for the old folks who need it that way!) [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 2.5 Build 3036.0 (Mac OS X)

Upgrade broke Vista... won't boot

I run the upgrade to 2.5-3036 and booted into Vista Enterprise (final, not Vista beta) It said the Parallels Tools were "old" and to install the new ones from the menu. After installing the tools it prompted to reboot now or wait. I chose Now. Vista hung on shutdown and after several minutes of waiting I stopped the VM. Reboot went into safe mode, successfully. Diagnostics showed no problems, so I rebooted into "Normal" mode. The Vista loading dots/progress bar was erratic and frequently stopped then restarted. After several minutes, it hung completely. CPU was maxing and fan kicked into high speed, so I had to shut down VM again. Looks like I'll have to do a complete rebuild. :-( [alert admin]

TSclientX 1.10 (Mac OS X)

Fails to launch

I downloaded the PPC version 1.10 for a PowerMac 1 Ghz MDD system. X11 launches, TSclientX "bounces" once in the Dock and the menu flashes in the menu bar, then it shuts down without error. Running RDesktop 1.5 in X11 from a manual compile works ok, as does VNC. This system does have dual monitors if that is related in any way. [alert admin]

Todos 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Nice idea, needs some work

I like the concept of Todos, but aside from being slow to launch, even after the initial one when it 'caches' its apps/icons, my main problem with it is that it takes up (on my system) 57+ Mb of RAM! Why? if the information is cached can't it be read from disk when needed instead of being held in RAM all the time? This is the show stopper for me. It is to easy to throw an Alias in my Favorites folder and put the Favorites folder in the dock, which take no memory and is available instantly without waiting to load. I also agree with the reviewer who stated that they do not like apps that only work via a menu bar icon. Until Apple puts the app menus in the app window bar like every other OS, there will always be problems with app menu's overlapping menu-item icons. (and making multiple monitor use awkward, but that's a whole different argument) It would also be nice to to have an "exclude" list so that obscure utilities that are seldom used do not show up. Samba 3.0.23rc3 (Mac OS X)

SAMBA versions and steps to install

I just noticed the URL for installation steps further down this thread, from "rgerdes". His page looks very complete but is over a year old and for OS X 10.3. Did anything change for 10.4? Also it appears that using FINK or Darwin Ports as the "easy way to install" will actually revert you back to OLDER versions than what is currently in OS X 10.4! In the case of Fink, the 'new' version it shows is SAMBA 2.x and OS X 10.4 already has version 3.x installed. So if one has to actually download the source and compile it themselves to get the latest updates, does it replace the Built-in OS X version (as "rgerdes" instructions appear to imply) or is it like Fink, a parallel install with some minor configuration file changes needed? Getting OS X to integrate with Windows networks is VITAL to Macs being accepted in the business world for things other than just desktop publishing. Why isn't he SAMBA updates being supported more by Apple? <sigh> maybe in OS X 10.5... [alert admin]

Samba 3.0.23rc3 (Mac OS X)

Fink SAMBA vs Built-In OS X

I won't get into the "make an installer for me" arguments. These updates are free and we should be grateful for the programmers who keep them current. If you are not advanced enough to run FINK, you have no business trying to update/modify default system files! Wait for Apples next auto updater. Anyway I do have a question... as I understand it, the FINK SAMBA install does not replace/update the built-in Apple one. It creates a NEW installation of the needed SAMBA files in a different directory. This is where my confusion comes in. How does one get OS X to use the new version instead of it's default old one? The closest thing I can find (via Google searches) says stuff like, "Install SAMBA via Fink and just modify the appropriate startup files" etc. But nowhere does it say what and where these "appropriate startup files" are! I am somewhat familiar with UNIX having used some very specialized equipment that had their own flavors of stripped-down UNIX as their OS, so I could follow a tutorial OK. And most people can follow steps even if they don't understand what all of them do. Perhaps instead of a full installer being programmed etc. a simple 10-12 step "how to" tutorial of what files and parameters need to be changed AFTER Fink installs it's new version would be sufficient. Then if something doesn't work these few manually done steps could be reversed, and one could go back to using the built-in OS X version with nothing lost but a few MB of drive space. Any system experts out there that could just jot down their steps and share them after they do their next install/update? [alert admin]

e2Sync Tiger 2.8 (Mac OS X)

Fast, reliable, comprehensive

I use MS Entourage, Palm OS4, and Moto ROKR phone. This program is the only "one stop" solution I've found for reliably syncing all of these devices, and it is MANY times faster than the various other programs or built-in partial solutions. Yes, it assumes that the user is not clueless on the using their own hardware and software. A reasonable assumption, and their instructions are clear and easy to follow. Each device is unique, do not make the mistake of thinking that the data will look identical on every device. All E2Sync does is match fields as best as it can. I have found that the easiest solution to prevent "lost data" is making sure you know the sequence and type of sync between devices and programs. You may have to run 2 sync operations and turn off one device for each, etc. For example, I first sync Entourage to my Palm 515, then sync the Palm to the ROKR in a separate sync process. This assures the sync path I desire. All contacts, calendar events alarms etc. sync without a hitch. [alert admin]

WebArchive Folderizer 1.2.4 (Mac OS X)

Very handy tool!

I have used a similar tool called WAFinspec for I.E. archives and was hoping to find one for new, supported browsers. Thanks! [alert admin]

SimpleTimer 1.2 (Mac OS X)

works great lots of features

For a simple timer app this product has a lot of really nice touches like "snooze" (repeat after HMS time) etc. Also great that you can choose your own mp3 alarms. Feature request... could the reminder pop-up have a setting to automatically be dismissed after HMS amount of time instead of requiring a keypress? Especially if the "repeat after" is activated. Great product at the best price. :-) [alert admin]

Finding Home Camera Online

I us an old "recycled" Mac w/OS 9 for this... Get a free homepage site like www.Tripod.com that allows FTP upload. I use a Control Strip item called "StripCam" to take a pic from the QuickCam and FTP it to the Tripod site every 5 minutes. There are similar FTP programs like "ImageWell" for OSX or just be done with all hassles and pay the $30 shareware fee for EvoCam. Most DSL…

nice idea, but how do you use it?

Click-hold-drag the URL from the browser navigation bar or a saved pic on disk etc. Press <F12> to activate Dashboard (while still holding mouse button down on selected item) then finish the drag-drop onto the widget.

Re: fails to launch (VNC)

VNC is still a no-go. I was originally connecting to a Mac OSX server w/Remote Desktop activated, but today after reading your post, I tried connecting to a Windows 2003 server which works fine with Chicken of the VNC. TSclient v110 cannot connect to it either. The error window opens immediately with the only options being [cancel] and [gtk-connect] which when clicked, takes one back to the error window. On the Mac server, I turned…

Re: fails to launch

The font cache rebuild worked. Weird because I just had to do that last week for GIMP so I thought the cache in X11 was good... Anyway, RDP now works great, VNC does not connect. Chicken of the VNC connects fine to the same server.
