Navigator works well on T5, but with some planning

If you already have a Palm then this software along with a GPS receiver turns your Palm into a fully functional GPS unit. The text to speech is understandable but not a truly human sounding. There is an alternative speech program that is a lot cleared, but it uses prerecorded words so it does not speak the names or the roads. I prefer to know that I need to turn right in 300 feet onto Willow street, so I put up with the synthesized voice. With the Palm T5 ROM update that came out about 2 years ago this program is very stable on my Palm. The ability to use addresses saved to my address book it a nice touch. I find the interface intuitive and pretty straight forward. I like being able to "geomark" a location that I need to find again later. The Navteq maps are large, and there are a LOT of them covering US and territories, Canada and Europe. The problem is the Palm is not a PC and does not have the power or memory to simply dump every map you have onto a memory card and expect it to work well. It works better if you organize maps into smaller groups (like a City, or a State or at least a region) and this requires setting it up ahead. Alternatively load the general highway maps and only load the detailed maps for where you plan to travel to. It does take some planning. The auto-reroute works well and quickly. The display is about as good as you can expect on a Palm and fully supports the larger and higher resolution screens on newer Palms. You can zoom in or out and even use a pseudo 3D viewing mode. If only US routing I prefer to use their NavCard product. I purchased it with the "complete GPS solution" and it included a bluetooth GPS receiver and a mount for my car. The card version does not require downloading any maps or organizing them. It has the same map data as the downloadable maps (minus some of the points of interest). If you won't be leaving the US on a trip it is an easier alternative. Tech support by email is quick (1-2 days), helpful and friendly. They even recommended a good amplified, powered mount for my T5 so I can hear better over my diesel truck engine. By the way I do not believe that this product is free, but it does include a license to download additional Navteq maps. [alert admin]

Newer and Alternative Versions

For Palm OS 5 devices there is Navigator version 2.2. Navigator is not listed here. There is a version like Navigator with all US maps on an SD card (applications called Mapopolis on "NavCard"). You can add maps including Canada and Europe under the NavCard license. I have been using NavCard on a T5 and other than the T5 speaker being a bit too quite to easily hear the verbal turn-by-turn directions in my truck I have no complaints. My BT-328 GPS receiver works very well with Mapopolis. It quickly and automatically finds alternate routes if you change the path you are driving. A T5 is easy to crash but I have had no problems related to stability of Mapopolis. Tech support is quick (1-2 days after an email). I would give the product 5 stars, if it were here to review. MegaLauncher continues to improve!

I have been using MegaLauncher since version 4.0 Every major update has been free and added more features. I love the way it caches files on cards, etc. to make loading them much faster when they are inserted. The free themes, sound packs and custom icons make customizing it easy. Now I am using a winter theme on my T5. The advanced commander mode makes finding, moving, copying files a breeze. Great for removing orphan files or moving something to a new location. The normal mode is still more powerful than the Palm interface. Beaming, deleting, running etc are all easy from within 1 screen. You can drag files to the trash for example (and delete them or hold them in the trash in case you change your mind) or you can click and hold on the file and select delete from the pop up menu. New features include FTP transfers, upload and downloading files from a network, finding all text or graphic files so ou can view them, and many features I have not even tried yet. [alert admin]

Pac the Man X 1.0.6 (Mac OS X)

Fun Free Game!

I have been using the prior version for about a month. Challenging (but possible) boards, a variety of music and 2 player action. This is easily the best free game I have ever tried! [alert admin]

Yellow Dog Linux 4.1 (Mac OS X)

Why not use Fink for free (can also install KDE, GNOME, etc.)

This is not a slam of Yellow Dog Linux but rather a question. With Fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net) you can install these same programs using Apple's X11. With FinkCommander (http://finkcommander.sourceforge.net) you can install and update it all from a GUI to avoid using Terminal. If you download the free Apple Developer Kit you can even compile and install the beta versions of the Unix software. What does Yellow Dog Linux do/have that Fink does not? I have installed Gnome, and am now using the latest version of KDE. I've also added a few custom Unix aplications for my kids to use for school. What else would this application give me? Trash It! 3.6 (Mac OS X)

Great Utility!

I've used various versions of this and it's worked great. The save password feature has only worked on 1 of my 3 Macs but the program still works OK (just have to type your password each time). It has gotten rid of files and folders that have simply refused to be deleted. A lot easier than using a Unix command from Terminal (and if you are a bad typist a lot safer too!). Hopefully this fixes the keychain/saved password problem! [alert admin]

Speed Download 2.3.6r2 (Mac OS X)

Does not work with Direcway Satellite/Apple Developer Site

I was intrigued by the possibility of increased download speed, but did not know if it would work with a Direcway Satellite Internet connection. The author thought it should work so I decided to try it. Xcode Tools 1.5 is a huge download from Apple. Using Safari my estimated download time was an hour and a half but I got a truncated download twice in the past week at just over 50% completed. So I thought this would be a great test for Speed Download. I actually read the instructions and it installed easily. I then tried to download Xcode Tools 1.5. Download speed was about 30% of the speed using Safari without Speed Download. OK, but perhaps it would download fully and not give me another partial download. I left it downloading and went to bed. By morning I was still only about 10% downloaded. I shut down my computer and went to work. The next evening I tried to connect to the Apple Developer’s site and was given a message that my account had been deactivated. I sent an email to the Apple Developer Site requesting assistance and got a call at work today from them. After about 27,000 hits on the Apple site they disabled my Apple Developer account! I was told they knew it was not a malicious attack and asked me for some more information. They thought perhaps I had set up a script and it had gone amok. Oddly it looked to them as if I were going through a Proxy Server though I am not sure if that is related to Direcway or Speed Download. Apple will reactivate my account in a day or so but ask that I not use this software again on their site. I have since uninstalled Speed Download, which was also very easy (follow the directions those of you who complained they could not remove it!) This software may work well with other types of Internet connections, but I strongly caution anyone using Direcway Satellite as their Internet provider. And use care if you are using it for downloading from the Apple site! [alert admin]

Apple AirPort 4.1 (Mac OS X)

Upgrade Fixed Dual Ethernet Airport Base!

The update went smoothly but the connection wizard after reboot was confusing and could not configure my Dual Ethernet Base Station. Was not really needed and after quitting the wizard everything was already updated properly. Using Airport Admin Utility I selected my Airport Base Station, then clicked Configure. This prompted me to update the base station ROM which went smoothly (not mentioned in any of update information). My connection between my iMac, Powermac and Powerbook all work flawlessly now and are also faster than prior. I had suffered from connectivity issues since I first purchased my base station. This finally seems to be fixed! [alert admin]

Passwords Plus 1.0.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Works well here

I tried a couple of other password managers and though they worked on the Palm this is the only one to let you see, edit and modify the data from your Mac. The problem mentioned with others about OS X synching has long been fixed, and even before it was there is a help section on their web page to tell you how to fix your system Permissions to solve the problem. Technical support though not really fast does respond and is helpful and free as well. I highly recommend this product for anyone with passwords, PINs, credit cards, email and web accounts to track. Crm4Mac 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Entourage support in future?

I am using Entourage 2004, but it won't "talk" with iSync to update my Address Book, or update my iPod calendars. If this utility could also integrate with Entourage it would be great! [alert admin]

Not Universal

Try the *FREE* version of GPG (GnuPG), works and has an installer for Intel Macs. Nothing runs or sucks CPU in the background. http://macgpg.sourceforge.net/ has the binary for version 1.4.3 and instructions to compile and install on a Mac (took me about 3 minutes and I am not a programer). http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/macgpg/GnuPG1.4.1.dmg?download has the binary (version 1.4.1). Use it from the shell, or if you aren't into Unix commands pick applications and plug-ins like GPGMail (http://www.sente.ch/software/GPGMail/) to…

SECURITY WARNING

This is CLEARLY spelled out in the docs, although they are sketchy otherwise. It's a "feature" and in my case it actually was. I ended up with messed up keys, I reinstalled and after everything was up and running I used the backups it created in my home directory to revoke my messed up keys. (With my working keys I have made a revoke.asc certificate which I used Stuffit to password protect. That way I…

Wrong Version

I think you are perhaps confusing the GPGMail version with the GnuPG version. The latest version of GnuPG is 1.4.1 (per version tracker). GPGMail does not include GnuPG so if you got a version error about GnuPG then download the latest GnuPG version and install it. It saves all your settings so it should be easy to do. Mark

Is this really an update?

After the "update" Password Plus shows version 1.005 (60). Either it's not an update at all or it updates something without changing the version number (secret update?).

Also Lost Contact

The setup wizard seems to only be used for setting up Airport Extreme and Airport Express. With my dual ethernet it did the same. I simply quit the Wizard and all was well. If you aren't setting up a new base station I don't think this is realy needed for anything. Airport Admin Utility was updated, and when I clicked my base station and clicked to configure I was prompted to update the base station ROM. Connections…
