Easy Database Manager 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Reviewing the screen captures on developer's web site, this grossly overpriced product looks like a Windows port. The miniumal features and functions match the open-source MySQL and phpMyAdmin with a $149 price tag. The tutorial is pretty minimal, obviously this is a new product with only a small staff (if that) maintaining it. There's no mention on the site of the system requirements. Why buy a minimally supported Windows port when there's Navicat for MySQL for $79 if you insist on buying a commercial product. [alert admin]

EasyFind runs but won't open an initial scan window. I logged a support ticket with Devon but they closed it with no info or resolution. Guess they don't really care that it doesn't work. Guess I'll not ever bother using their software. [alert admin]

SimpleDoc 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Even though this company isn't a clueless Windows developer attempting to break into the Macintosh/Linux/Unix space, they clearly are targeting a business or enterprise user. At $600 for a server and $50 per seat for clients, this is clearly something that only a bigger company would buy. I wonder if someone would be willing to dedicate a high-end Macintosh with a backup system connected to it to be a document server. The product allows for scanning and maintaining version control for binary documents like images (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BPN, and GIF), Office documents (word, excel and powerpoint), and PDF. Other systems I've seen were for an enterprise (e.g. IBM's Documentum and others for engineering drawings). But this ain't for a home user. [alert admin]

Visage 2.4.2 (Mac OS X)
Caused some applications to hog CPU
I installed this on my 10.4.11 system and strange things started happening to some applications. They all started to hog the CPU intermittently. The worst affected ones were Eudora, DragThing, LittleSnitch, and PhotoShop CS2. I couldn't get anything done and had to reboot to get my system back as ForceQuitting the application wouldn't fix the problem. It would just do it again later. I thought it might be Flip4Mac and related to Quicktime as samples of the affected applications when they had this problem were looping deep inside the OS. It turns out Visage was the cause. Once I reset everything and ripped it out, the system became stable again. I've asked for my money back for this. It was a waste. [alert admin]

RadioRocker 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
I complained to the developer that I didn't want to install Flip4Mac on my system that had it already installed and he fixed his install to have you do it manually. I tried the latest release and it's a total non-starter. No matter what stream I select anywhere, it says they're unavailable. This is so not worth $10. [alert admin]

Wish I would have looked here before I bought....
Just to continue follow up on this. The developer apparently isn't reading their emails as mail to bookit@everydaysoftware.net bounces due to over quota. Sending support requests through their web site, so far, have gone unanswered. If they're being delivered to the same email address, they're going into the bit bucket. This level of support is totally unacceptable. I paid for Bookit in Jan 2007, so getting my money back is really not…

Warning, Warning, Warning Will Robinson! The last time I installed CUPS from an external source, it screwed up my system so that any future Apple Update broke printing. I had to reinstall CUPS from the package file which I luckily saved. Only a full re-install fixed the problem. I've stayed way from these updates ever since and let Apple deal with CUPS through their own updates. They own it now. YMMV.

Latest Beta is Now Useless for Me
I moved on to Classic Menu over a year ago. Unsanity has a lot to answer for about dropping the ball for their customers. I've found replacements for all their haxies that I can (FruitMenu --> ClassicMenu, QuicKeys --> MenuMaster) and live without the other stuff (WindowShadeX, Labels). Time to move along. There's nothing to see here. The Coroner has been called.

And I just found out that Venix has continued with their same stunning QA--I ran TypeBook Creator and printed out a font. All I got was a Postscript error coming out of the printer. And "support" has yet to respond to my "request for a working version for testing".

I've had prior dealings with NCH and I'd steer well clear of them. I tried one of their sound conversion programs, first the free one which didn't work then a trial of the paid version which also didn't work. Q: So why should you be SCARED of a CUPS update?
I installed a version of CUPS (1.20, I think) about a year ago. It broke printing after every Apple Security Update since then. Even if Apple "owns" CUPS, the version that's out there for the rest of the world isn't the same as the one that Apple incorporates into it's own updates.
