RubyCalc 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

does not maintain state

Here's "irb" in the Terminal:

irb(main):001:0> x = 7
=> 7
irb(main):002:0> 4 * x
=> 28

Here's RubyCalc:

>> x = 7
=> 7
>> 4 * x
=> -:1: undefined local variable or method `x' for main:Object (NameError)

See? RubyCalc doesn't remember variable values. So if I wanted to use Ruby as a calculator, why wouldn't I just use "irb" in the Terminal?

Pac the Man X 1.0.7 (Mac OS X)

keys respond too slowly

According to the docs:

"Q: The keys are not responding fast enough. What should I do?
A: We corrected this problem in version 1.0.2."

No, you didn't. When I hold down the left arrow key, I expect PacMan to take the first left turn he comes to. In reality, he often skips that one and turns at the next left instead. This is because it takes too long for the program to realize that the left arrow key is held down. That makes the game pretty pointless. [alert admin]

MemoryStick 1.5 (Mac OS X)

oops

Sorry about that. I think the download is fixed now. (I don't understand what the problem was - even on my own machine, making an archive and trying to unzip fails, and I don't know why. I should have tested this before posting. It is now a zipped .dmg and it appears to work fine.) [alert admin]

Max 0.3 (Mac OS X)

nice interface, but...

Just one little problem: it didn't actually make any files. The reason might be that I don't want MP3, Flac, or Ogg Vorbis files: I want .wav or .aiff files. So I unchecked the MP3, Flag, and Ogg checkboxes, because those are not what I want. :) Currently I am using X-CD-Roast for this (cdparanoia front end), but it's an X11 program so I'd rather have something more pleasant and native if possible. Well, Max has a very nice interface which behaves just as expected, with nice feedback during the ripping process. If it would just make .wav or .aiff files at the end of the ripping process, instead of nothing at all which is what I got, it would be great! [alert admin]

Spotlaser 1.0 (Mac OS X)

nice try, but...

The window isn't even a real window - it has no titlebar, it can't be moved. And there's no access to the many kinds of specific metadata; for example, you can't use this app to find a picture greater than a certain width. Icons are mislabelled (tooltips are wrong). Finally, the app doesn't actually do anything: no results appear from a find. Blap! Thanks for playing. [alert admin]

ZoomQuilt 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Familiar

It's a reproduction of an existing flash file; see http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/zoomquilt.php for example. [alert admin]

Volume Slider 1.1 (Mac OS X)

uses too much CPU

Unfortunately, uses massive amounts of CPU relative to what it does (i.e. nothing). That's a pity, because I long to use this program, and with this kind of insane CPU usage, I just can't. What makes it potentially better than the system's own menu extra? I can think of five things: (1) The menu extra beeps when you use it, and there is no way to turn this off. Indeed, I was about to write my own app to solve this problem when I discovered Volume Slider instead. (If the author can't get the CPU problem solved, I might still have to.) (2) To see the current sound volume, you have to pop the menu extra down. With Volume Slider, you just see it. (3) Volume Slider shows numerical value and hash marks; the menu extra does not. (4) The menu extra is a menu extra. I hate those: they take up valuable menu bar real estate, and get crowded out by programs that have lots of menus. (5) My keyboard has no sound-volume keys, so I am forced to use the menu extra (which, as I said before, beeps) unless I can find or write an alternative. [alert admin]

TAO 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Brilliant, but...

Although the developer has almost understood MORE, he has not fully understood it. As far as I can tell, there is a major functionality hole, something without which no outliner can be useful - keyboard navigation. There has to be a way to navigate from this item to its next or previous sibling even if children intervene, or from this item directly to its parent. Once that's in place, this will be the first Mac OS X application capable of replacing MORE. [alert admin]

Brilliant, but...

This is issue is now closed - with the release of 1.02, TAO now has full keyboard navigation. (It has had it in beta for a while.) This program has now gone from great to superb!

I've now written my own version of this app that doesn't use any CPU time.
