SMARTReporter 2.3.0 (Mac OS X)
The program doesn't seem to open its preferences window unless it's given access to the Internet. I'm not saying the developer is malicious, but this is a potential security risk that I'm unwilling to take. [alert admin]

Little Snitch 2.0 beta 6 (Mac OS X)
No sooner was 2b6 installed than it uncovered an attack on sshd from 75.58.175.155. Google confirms others have been attacked from the same IP. It would be nice if monitoring could be selectively configured to report only in-bound and/or out-bound connection requests and/or traffic associated with connections initiated locally versus remotely. VMware Fusion 1.0b4.1 (Mac OS X)
I greatly appreciate Fusion's unique ability to run 64-bit virtual machines configured with multiiple CPUs, and the attention VMware paid to timer issues. When guest operating systems are idle, Fusion imposes almost no load on my system. In contrast, Parallels seems to cause constant disk chatter and moderate CPU load. [alert admin]

RadioSHARK 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)
RadioSHARK software "phones home" when launched, even when automatic updates are inactivated. [alert admin]

Still can't schedule recordings ![]()

I've bumped my review to 2 stars because Griffin is showing some signs of providing support, and at least now the station can be changed without having to quit/restart the program to make the change effective.
However, the software crashes immediately when a program scheduled to be recorded is currently on the air. This makes it impossible even to listen to the program, let alone record it. For programs that are of such interest that one would like to record them, not being able to listen to them makes RadioSHARK all the more frustrating to use.
This is under 10.4.9 on Intel. [alert admin]

RadioSHARK 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
To fix a bug in their software that arises from applying the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Updater, Griffin recommends users reinstall Mac OS X. This comes after 10.4.9 was in perhaps the longest beta test period of any Mac OS X update.
An unusable and effectively unsupported product earns the lowest possible rating. [alert admin]

Ticker 3.1 (Mac OS X)
Seriously broken, at least on Intel Macs
Contrary to the developer's suggestion, removing the plist does not prevent version 3.1 from routinely crashing. And even when it doesn't crash, versions 3.0.4 and 3.1 both fail to retrieve information off the web. I've not had a problem with 3.0.4 on G5s... and do not intend to upgrade to 3.1. [alert admin]

Dantz Retrospect client 6.1.130 (Mac OS X)
It took 6+ weeks to get this information out of EMC/Insignia: Retrospect has a problem handling ACLs (access control lists) on Intel Macs. So I ran "sudo fsaclctl -a -d" to disable ACL support on all of the volumes on my MacBook Pro, rebooted to ensure a consistent state, and the Retrospect Client now seems to work just fine. If you have an Intel Mac and don't need ACL support (like most Mac users?), this workaround may work for you, too. [alert admin]

The full 16 GB of memory in my Mac Pro is now reclaimed upon exiting Parallels 2.2.1940, with a reboot of the Mac no longer required. Memory is still seen to be limited to 3 GB while Parallels is running, though.

This is indeed CLI (command line interface) software, not GUI, which requires Mac users to have some basic familiarity with using apps within the Terminal application found in the /Applications/Utilities folder. According to the installation instructions, be sure to install the software in a directory listed in your PATH environment variable. (Lots of information about this can be found in Google and other search engines using keywords "PATH environment variable"). If the…
