DbVisualizer 6.0.2 (Mac OS X)
How would this work on Panther?
Fairly recently this package has changed its requirements to include Java 1.5 as a minimum. Can someone explain how it's possible to do that on a pre-10.4 system? As far as I can tell, the maximum version of Java for Panther (10.3.9 in my case) is still 1.4.n. Is this just a case where the package needs to change (raise) their listed VersionTracker OS version requirements? [alert admin]

RegExhibit 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I do see for just a few seconds the initial window and then the application crashes. I'm running 10.4.8 in case that matters. I can provide the crashdump file if you'd like it. /Marty [alert admin]

Celestia 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)
uses all my CPU just sitting still
I've got a 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4 with 1GB of RAM running 10.4.3. Both this version, and 1.4 before it take all the CPU I've got and runs it into the ground. And that's simply by launching it and anytime it's idle. It is really snappy when I move around the galaxy but really, it should take a much larger break when I am not doing anything in the application. I even tried the new OpenGL option you suggested with no change in CPU during "idle" times. Sorry, as slick as this seems to be I can't just let my processor cook simply because I forget to quit the application. In the future it would also be nice to have an on-line version of the changelog -- I couldn't find anything like it at the celestia.sourceforge.net site. And an 18MB download just to find out the latest changes in the 48KB changelog is a lot of wasted bandwidth for everyone's network: mine, the software mirror sites and everything in between. /Marty [alert admin]

To Do Tracker 1.2 (Mac OS X)
It says freeware, but there's a "registration system"?
Can the developer please explain if this version is truly free, or really shareware (with a demo period perhaps) or commercial? Any package that lists improvements in its registration system in the "What's new in this version" section doesn't sound free to me . If it's not really free then VersionTracker needs to be updated to reflect that. I also noticed that VersionTracker's total download count for all versions of this package got reset for some reason. Maybe the developers submitted this version as something entirely new instead of an update to a prior entry. /Marty [alert admin]

I too had some initial issues and questions about throttled (and Throttled Pro) on my Tiger system. But after doing some tests, examining the results and then sending an e-mail to the developer got everything working just fine. The bottomline of why this product initially had trouble with my Tiger installation is that I already had several firewall rules in place. Throttled really doesn't know how best to automatically place its own rules within this context. For some it might work right away... for others the new firewall rules added may have no impact at all. If you seem to find this product not "working", please examine your own firewall setups and try to place throttled's rules *before* other firewall rules that take effect even before the new ones get a chance. For me, I had to change my rule number to 00005 *and* delete a "check-state" from rule 00001, moving it to 00006. Throttled rules are now working for me. The developer was very responsive to my e-mailed questions and suggestions for improvement. I couldn't ask for anything more. /Marty [alert admin]

Widget Maker X 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
limited function IDE is too expensive
It seems that these recent attempts at a limited function widget IDE are all overpriced. MUCH more complex IDEs (NetBeans comes to mind, weighing in at over 77MB) are free in the Open Source arena. If your "product" proves to be the best widget IDE, wouldn't you want to have 5 times as many users praising your efforts because you charged a token fee of $3 instead of the current $15-17? Or who knows how many users if you didn't charge anything, but accepted donations (some of the *greatest* names in Mac add-on software have always done this, and that's how they became the greatest)? If I had to spend $16.50 per tool for each extendable feature of Mac OS X I'd go broke. AppleScript, Automator and Widgets to name a few ... that adds up really fast. Something that I use every day like a browser, text processor, terminal program, FTP client, etc. are worth more than an (IDE) editor for Widgets and I get those all for free. So why charge for your tool that would get occasional, but appreciated use from a relatively small community of potential users? Is it "fame" from happy users or the money you're after? You've already said that you did this tool because you wanted it for yourself. Sharing it with others doesn't require that you make it seem like such expensive shareware. /Marty [alert admin]

BBEdit 8.2.3 (Mac OS X)
latest is only for 10.3.9 or later
VersionTracker says it needs 10.3.5 but their Release Notes says 10.3.9 because of their changes to support Mac OS X on Intel. /Marty [alert admin]

Layer Four Traceroute 2.3.1 (Mac OS X)
There *is* a pre-build version!
Use the Developer's Site link above and then look for "LFT MacOS X" under the Download LFT section on the right. You'd think that the pre-built version should be what's listed for this package on VersionTracker, not (just) the source kit. It *is* just a command-line utility -- not a GUI so if you're not comfortable with Terminal you won't benefit from this package at all. /Marty [alert admin]

Layer Four Traceroute 2.3.1 (Mac OS X)
even with pcap-int.h it won't build
I put a copy of pcap-int.h onto my system and still could not build this utility: % make gcc -g -O2 -c -o lft.o lft.c In file included from lft.c:84: /usr/include/net/bpf.h:91: error: redefinition of `struct bpf_program' /usr/include/net/bpf.h:115: error: redefinition of `struct bpf_version' /usr/include/net/bpf.h:322: error: redefinition of `struct bpf_insn' In file included from lft.c:103: lft_queue.h:200:1: warning: "STAILQ_LAST" redefined In file included from /usr/include/net/if_var.h:117, from /usr/include/net/if.h:94, from lft.c:64: /usr/include/sys/queue.h:213:1: warning: this is the location of the previous definition In file included from lft.c:103: lft_queue.h:343:1: warning: "TAILQ_FOREACH_REVERSE" redefined In file included from /usr/include/net/if_var.h:117, from /usr/include/net/if.h:94, from lft.c:64: /usr/include/sys/queue.h:350:1: warning: this is the location of the previous definition make: *** [lft.o] Error 1 This was after a ./configure without any additional parameters. If we need to supply some for the make to then succeed on Mac OS X (10.3.7 in my case) it wasn't immediately apparent in the INSTALL document. Oh well, it sounded like a cool tool. /Marty [alert admin]

Matt, Thanks for the update on this capability. That's what I need so that I can decide what to get, and/or when I will get it. I personally will *not* hold you or anyone else to your projected timeline for this or any other feature. So now two other questions remain: do you charge ~$109 dollars for each software update, or only for major ones and will 2.1/2.5 involve an upgrade fee from 2.0? Again I won't hold…

When can PowerLinc V2 Upload be expected?
Okay, I'll bite. The VersionTracker features for 2.0.0b15 says: "Indigo has native support for the following INSTEON / X10 compatible devices: PowerLinc V2, PowerLinc 1132U/CU, CM-11, and LynX-PLC interfaces". It doesn't say anything about not supporting uploads to the PowerLinc V2 units. Going over to the "Developer's Site" also doesn't say anything there unless you click through to other pages. And then it says things like: "Note that Indigo does not currently support uploading to the PowerLinc…

don't be afraid of features that you don't use
To Hans Solo: as just one example, the Dock, despite it's shortcomings for some users is decidedly not "un-Mac-like" yet it has as a preference the ability to always be shown. Some Mac users like it better that way and some don't. I wouldn't want Apple as a developer to force me to use a keystroke to show the Dock, although it does provide one. The use of preferences gives that middle ground. I use several…

happens even with prior version
I've been getting the same thing more and more lately over the last 3 weeks. I'm still running 4.2.1 so it's not limited to just the update. I bet it's on their server's end -- perhaps they don't have the needed capacity to handle all the connections coming back to check for updates, or some other backend issues. If you don't respond to the dialog window that appears when this happens, over time many, many of the…

I have no complaints with my combination of VNC software on the Mac. I use it all the time! For the Mac client I use Chicken of the VNC. It has saved settings, stored passwords (if you want to use them) and a couple of clicks later I'm viewing/controlling the remote system. For server software on my Mac I use OSXvnc. It can be setup as a startup item so it's always running and waiting for…

I found this in Dantz's knowledgebase, but only because I was digging hard for it: http://kb.dantz.com/display/2n/kb/article.asp?aid=9511 TITLE: Retrospect Client Security Vulnerability Fixes It lists this 6.1.130 version of the client as containing the fix. There may be other fixes that are on other knowledgebase pages that also are in this kit. But a search for 6.1.130 or 6_1_130 results in no search matches. /Marty

My username is *not* admin, yet I get the exact same error message. I'm still running 10.4.3 so the problem isn't limited to just those on 10.4.5. One thing that may be different for me than for some is that I have placed your application in a directory on another partition. The particular folder name is "CD/DVD..". So perhaps there is some problem in the script when either the application isn't in the normal Applications folder…

uses all my CPU just sitting still
Thanks for the Files link... I had found no such link at celestria.sourceforge.net or anything else linked to by VersionTracker. Maybe it's just me, but having the application take a break for a few (more) milliseconds on a regular basis shouldn't ruin the visual impact of streaking by a planet, it certainly wouldn't hurt when the application is just looking at a planet and the night sky around it like when it first launches, and it…

I second the motion of having To Do lists as a part of notepad-like tools. I too use the To Do Tracker widget but it only does To Do lists, so I'm still looking for a widget that both styles of notes (without becoming real complicated to use or costly). I don't know if To Do lists would have to be a specific page type within NotePad but it would be great if both styles could…
