JPEGView 3.3.1 (Mac OS 9)

indispensable

Man I wish this was ported to OSX - this is the one and only OS 9 product I insist on keaping (and viz keaping the whole classic system installed making it bloatwere by proxie) I can't remember ever not having JPEG view I've used it for so long. Stable lightweight and surprisingly powerfull - may not be as powerfull ad Graphics converter but JPEGview still wins hands down and by a long margin for intuitive interface and its FREE. Only problem is that it will not display a ful list of files and folders in its dialogue box window if the viewed folder has more than ow I forget but around 1200 items which probably says more about my file organisational skills than the program. a work around

before you go any further mount your iPod go in to disk utilites application, click on the ipod icon and then click on "new image" save the image under a different name from the ipod but avoind putting spaces or special characters in it other than underscore _ . wait untill the backup of your iPod is made then proceed Only way I could get it to work was to use the "restore to factory settings" option - ie erase ipod then install new iPod OS Once this is done you can mount the iPod backup disk image and drag/drop any non music a files you put on to the iPod (in Hard disk mode) If you use automatic playlist management in iTunes then launch iTunes, accept or change the new name for your "New iPod" then let it do it's thing. That's it end of story proceed no further. else If you don't wish to use automatic management and just want to get the music that was on it back then start iTunes accept or change the "new iPod" name and disable the automatic management then go in to terminal and type in the text in the following block: -------- CD /volumes/<name of mounted ipod image> CP -R iPod_Control /Volumes/<name of reset iPod> ------ the first line simply takes you in to the mounted disk image and in to the hidden folder that contains your MP3 player setting and music the second line copies your MP3 files and all the settings back to your iPod's hard disk - this will take some time depending on how many MP3's you have... <aside> In fact it seems to take far longer than it should given Firewire so hold on and wait until the little spinning circle on the iPod screen stops - if you get impatient like me and think it's crashed you just have to start all over again [alert admin]

if used as bootable external drive

of course if you have your iPod set up as a bootable OSX external drive like I do then simply copying the OSX system files back in finder won't help. Re-install the OSX system to the iPod using the installer CD/DVD or open terminal app and hunt down all the ".<filename>" files and "CP" them back in unix [alert admin]

totally wacked

Used with the iTunes update caused my computer to freaze (apple+option+esc showed itunes, ipod updater and finder as "non responding applications"). ... forced reboot.... restart iTunes - it's updated but even though the iPod is mounted on the desktop it won't recognise it. Undock/redock and the ipod shows up iTunes then wants to update the ipod - say yes and it's back to the top and all the smae problems again. say cancel and all seems OK... one hopes first run through the update solo (sans iTunes) it says that the ipod has been updated and that you will need to restart th iPod... (by this they don't explain if they mean restart or reset never mind tried both with equal total failure)... restarting the ipod still showed it as running 2.1 but didn't remount. Undocking and redocking the iPod made updater say that the iPod needed the update but clicking update caused the message that it detected a single iPod that wasn't mounted so it couldn't be updated. Repeated undock/redock produced the same message. Quiting the updater and restarting it simply results in the iPod being unmounted and the updater program having the buttons greyed out. redocking the iPod and - well the iPod thinks it's mounted but and it shows up in system profiler and disktools but it doesn't apear on the desktop nor does the updater recognise it. DrDJ Free 3.0b2 (Mac OS X)

why no manual fade?

OK early days/basic program so no pitch/key shift OK but no manual fadeout? I want to grab a slider and , well, slide it :) can you add that? can the x-fade time be more variable than arbitary 0, 5 , 10 etc seconds - maybe a slider on that? apart from that a nice small player with some potential but no substitute yet for other programs out there [alert admin]

need to use safari

yep a true zealot ;) if you manually go to the home page of this developer with IE or Netscrape there is a little note saying "You are not using Safari" I know in the internet you can;t tell a wisper from a scream but this little sentence speaks in volumes. [alert admin]

fast and clean…

have used it for a few days now without any chrashes, which is batter than I can say for OSX versions (and non beta at that) of netscape and explorer. One problem though is that if you are in a multiframe page with a text entry field (say a company search page or a web chat site) when one frame refreshes you loose your text insertion point in another frame :( Fix that and I'll give it a 5star rating [alert admin]

ProTools Free 5.0.1 (Mac OS 9)

used Pro Tools…

'n' love it, never could afford it though, but heavy hits on web site are making downloading difficult, - with my T1 link it's told me it's going to take 5 hours to down load 1 x 17 meg part of the 3 file download! best wait for a week for things to cool off [alert admin]

ProTools Free 5.0.1 (Mac OS 9)

not 4 stars…

for download time Soapbox - T1 link US to Australia 4 hours :( Just that it is great software but not perfect, no software even with an automated desk YET gives the feal & touch of a "real" ADAT/anlogue/desk/outboard effects system so use them together for best of both worlds :) [alert admin]
