DEVONthink Pro Office 2.0pb7 (Mac OS X)
DevonThink Pro Office is a Great Tool to Manage your Digital Life ![]()

There is nothing quite like this program and V2 is going to be even better. I've been using this now with my all-in-one color laser machine to keep track of all of those documents and other bits of information that a person in the digital age seems to collect constantly. Contracts, warrantees, invoices, tax information, membership information, personal info, etc. I really appreciate the OCR ability so I can turn nearly anything into a searchable document. OCR isn't perfect, of course, but it does the trick in most cases. While the Pro Office version is priced out of the range of most people, it is a handy tool and thanks to the fact the Devon Technologies offers an upgrade path from each version of their product to the next makes it a bit easier for people to slowly trade up as their needs grow. I tried looking for a program like this for Windows and there isn't anything even remotely close. The reciept and page managers don't do half of what DTPO can. [alert admin]

BT-1 Wireless Webcam Driver 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Not the best webcam, but they tried. ![]()

Here are the specific update details about the 1.0.2 driver vs. the 1.0.1 driver: Adds enable/disable checkbox setting. Fixes a crash when accessing camera settings in aMSN and Modul8 software. Now for a few words about the product itself: If you have a laptop with a fixed camera, then this might be something worth considering. However there are a few very notable limitations that reduce the usefulness of this hardware: * You cannot use this product while it is charging or plugged in via USB. This means you get only 4 hours at most of usage time before you MUST stop using the camera for an hour or so. * There is no way to leave the camera in a low power state while not in use or selected a video source. If you don't actively use the camera for a while, it turns itself off completely and you need to manually turn on the unit again before you can use it. This makes using it for things like security impossible unless you leave a program open with an active connection to the unit at all times. Don't forget, you get at most 4 hours of video before you need to disconnect and recharge. * The included tripod for some odd reason was intentionally designed with one leg shorter than the other two when fully extended, meaning you can't raise the camera up very high without angling it. * This is a bluetooth camera, so it has certain limitations because of that... like the fact that it only gets 15 frames per second maximum and the fact that you have only a very limited range you can use this camera in. In addition, there is a lag while the video is transfered to your machine, so it is always a few seconds behind realtime. * It is a fixed-focus camera. This isn't unusual on a webcam, but for the price I expected more. * It has very poor low-light performance. This isn't unexpected, but don't think you can use this in a poorly-lit environment. * Absolutely no PC support. I'd love to be able to use the unit under bootcamp. * Did I mention the price? $150 is a lot to pay for this rather limited hardware. On the plus side: * Ecamm is a very good company and they stand behind their products. I've always really appreciated that they don't treat paying customers like criminals, unlike most software companies. * The unit is small and unobtrusive, makes no noise and has no annoying front-facing power indicator like most units. This makes it a good choice when traveling. * It is one of the only Mac-compatible bluetooth cameras. All-in-all this is a product that has very limited usefulness. If you want a wireless camera, you may be better off with a camera that supports wifi. If not, save your money and get a standard USB 2 or Firewire camera, you'll be much happier with it. However, if you have a laptop and travel a lot and need to be able to point your web cam somewhere other than directly at your face, this might be something to consider. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.5.10 (Mac OS X)
An excellent product at a wonderful price ![]()

I bought VueScan many years ago to work with a flatbed scanner on my old Power Mac G4 MDD. Recently I got a new Mac Pro and a Brother MFC 9840CDW color laser all-in-one and I tried using an earlier version and the program wouldn't recognize the printer because it is wirelessly connected to my home network. At the time, Hamrick's site said that the product did not work with wireless scanners, so I figured that I'd never be able to use his product with my Brother. Lo and behold just a few versions later and my wireless printer/scanner/copier is now supported flawlessly, including the document feeder. Kudos to Mr. Hamrick, his software is top notch. You'd be silly not to get the Pro version just for the lifetime free updates if for no other reason. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.5.04 (Mac OS X)
Great software, lacks network support
Although this software is wonderful, don't even consider buying it if you want to manage a scanner over a network (local or otherwise). Hamrick has said they don't plan to support networked scanners. That's sad really, since networked scanners are more and more common and that feature really should be part of any Pro software. I've used the software for years to manage various scanners, but the software is useless on my networked Brother color laser all-in-one. Still, if you don't have any networked scanners, VueScan is a solid piece of work that still needs some UI usability enhancements (though it has improved over the years). [alert admin]

DOT-TUNES 4.2.0.41 (Mac OS X)
Dot Tunes does things that no other music sharing programs can do. I've also found Jeff to be responsive to requests for assistance. There are a few things that could be better, though: * The product ends up being very, very expensive if you want full functionality. The program is "free" but any real functionality costs money. It is $100 to get access to all of the plugins. If you think you might remotely need more than a couple of plugins, it would be best to go with the bundle, or you are just wasting money. * The authentication scheme is not customer friendly. If you do pay for functionality, you are only permitted to "register" once. If the app's preferences get damaged, you upgrade your computer or have to remove and reinstall the program, you will be stuck writing to Jeff and explaining why you need another activation. Jeff's been very understanding and fairly quick to respond, but any registration system that treats paying customers like criminals isn't a good one and should be changed. * The program seems to forget or need to reimport the XML files from iTunes regularly. This requires user intervention and so you are stuck without service until you can get to your computer and reimport the XML files. Hopefully 4.2 will fix this. Time will tell. * Artwork importing takes a very long time and you basically cannot do anything with dottunes during that time. * You cannot run it as a faceless background app with a single menu bar item. It runs as a standard app which you must then hide if you don't want to see it. * The hookup program functionality is NOT built-in. That will cost you extra. Yes, that's another "free" program that requires you to pay to use it. It also requires you to have a license for every computer you use it on. The hookup license should be free for anyone who's running dottunes in paid mode and the app to play it on other computers should be FREE, really free, not "free to download but not to use" free. Skip hookup and use Simplify Media (really free) instead. On the plus side, 4.2 does tone down the DOTTUNES advertising, which is very welcome and the new UI is something of an improvement. All-in-all if you have the money, dottunes is a very capable program. [alert admin]

CopyPaste Pro 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
I've been a paid user of CP for many years and I have to say I am very disappointed by the state of this supposed beta program. I find CopyPaste Pro 1.x to be a large step back in usability and stability compared with the previous version. First let me say that I've paid for CPP and have been using it for weeks now. I've gone back to using the old version. Several things bother me: 1) The new version is much slower than the older version, especially on older G4 hardware. The old version worked great on older hardware. The new version slows down copying and pasting so there is a delay which doesn't happen with the older version. 2) Pay more for less: The cost of the program ($30) is more than the older version it replaces, but you do not get key features like Y-Type. The author has suggested that we'll all have to pay to get that feature back. 3) The new version focuses on eye candy rather than useful new features. The pallets have a certain "modern" feel to them, but don't want to be "wowed" by the eye candy of such a potentially useful product. What I want is to forget that I even have the thing installed. I don't want it to get in my way or distract me. CPP is just supposed to add important functionality to the copy and paste process. 4) CPP is becoming bloated. Instead of focusing on improving the core features, the author has decided to add all kinds of things we really don't need. I don't want or need a new word processor. Bean takes a while to launch and adds features that most people will never need just to make a quick edit to a copied bit of text. Give me a simple, built-in text editor that doesn't use even more RAM. Most people are going to recopy text from the source rather than take lots of time to load a separate program just to make an edit for a program they probably still have open. All-in-all I really hope the author does a serious rethink of his program and works to make the program more useful and less bloated. [alert admin]

The author of this program stands behind all of his products and takes support very seriously. Issues are dealt with promptly. As for the program itself it's a wonderful product that has many uses. If you work with lots of files or want to organize your collection of files then this product is for you. It is also very handy if you want to split up content into particularly sized chunks. Have multiple RAW files you want to back up on CD? BMFM can make sure you fill up each CD with as many files as possible so you use the fewest pieces of media possible. There are tons of reasons to buy this program. Download the trial and see what you can do with it. I've noticed big speed increases with 1.2 vs. 1.0 on my PPC Mac. [alert admin]

This looks like they licensed ClanLord
The graphics are nearly identical. My guess is that would be why there won't be an English language version. Delta Tao doesn't want to canabalize their own market. I think it's nice there will be a MMORPG that will focus on other languages. Good luck with this. [alert admin]

If you hurry, you can get this free from MacAppADay.com. However, it's probably not worth your time. The program is _SLOW_ and buggy, especially with larger libraries. Perhaps a future version will fix this, but for now, don't bother with it. [alert admin]

This poster clearly hasn't used The Cheat much. As noted in the directions for The Cheat, after the initial search, all future searches are on only those values that TC found the first time. If you want to start a new search, you click the "Clear Search" button and type in your new value. I've used both TC and the program this person recommends. They are both free, so it's worth having both in your arsenal,…

I had problems too, but running the Stuffit Cleaner (universal uninstaller all the way back to I believe Stuffit 7) worked great for me. http://support.smithmicro.com/cs/smkb.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1730 They really should include that program with the installer. The techs told me to run the permissions repair feature (that it prompts you to do), but that feature didn't work for me. Thankfully, skipping that and having it remove files DID work. If you've been using Stuffit Deluxe for a while, you'll…

I may be wrong about this, but based on the information I could find on their website, this software interfaces with their website to provide access to your music and videos. If it works the way they suggest, you only need an unusual port open on the Mac serving the media, but users actually access the music from a regular web page running on port 80. If this is the case and the music is streamed…

I'll tell you why. Because I need the volume level of audio output to be high to help the sound from my external speakers but I DON'T want the startup chime coming out of the speaker inside my Mac to wake the neighbors. Since Apple provides NO way to control the startup sound separately from the main volume level, I rely on this preference pane to do the trick. It does what it claims to do without…

I own both. Other than inital startup, Transmit is slower in just about every transaction. It takes far longer to upload and download files (especiallylots of small ones). The interface is nicer on Transmit, but I can do things with RBrowser pro that I can't do with Transmit.
