MagiCal 1.1r2 (Mac OS X)
MagiCal 1.1r2 misbehaves on my two Mac Minis running 10.6.2. Clicking the little (i) in the lower right corner does not bring up any drop down menu. I looked in my Console log on both Mac Minis. I see numerous repeated warnings for Magical stating, "*** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0xc064df90 of class NSImage autoreleased with no pool in place -- just leaking." Six such warnings happen happen every second! Maybe that's why Magical is using over 1% of my CPU cycles. Quitting and relaunching Magical eliminates the Console log messages temporarily, and CPU usage drops back down to 0.4% for a while. However RAM usage gradually climbs upward at 1/10th of a MB every few second, then Console warnings resume and CPU usage gradually climbs back above 1. This looks and smells like a memory leak. It's reminiscent of MagiCal's instability in the early days of OS 10.5. I conclude MagiCal is not ready for Snow Leopard. I removed MagiCal from my Snow Leopard machines until this issue is fixed. I'll check out iStat Menus as an alternative -- thanks to PlainTiger for the tip. [alert admin]

ThermographX 1.4.0 (Mac OS X)
ThermographX has been running fine on my PowerBook G4 from OS 10.2.8 up through OS 10.5.8. However after stepping up to a new 2.53 GHz Mac Mini, OS 10.6.1, ThermographX days are sadly over. Fortunately several alternatives exist for Intel hardware. ThermographX, RIP! [alert admin]

MenuMeters 1.4b3 (Mac OS X)
No joy in Snow Leopard 10.6.1 on new 2.53 GHz Mac Mini...
This is a must-have utility! I've grown very fond of MenuMeters over the years. I would gladly pay a reasonable shareware fee for software of this high caliber. I had no problem with MenuMeters 1.3 on my father's Core2Duo MacBook Pro under OS 10.6.1, but version 1.4b3 won't launch on my brand new 2.53 GHz Mac Mini and 10.6.1. Version 1.3 was working perfectly on my PowerBook before I migrated the account to the new Mini; however following migration 1.3 gave a message that it's not compatible with Intel CPUs. I'ill gladly share log files if the developer wants those. [alert admin]

SteerMouse 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I didn't purchase a Magic Mouse yet. Does anyone care to comment on how well SteerMouse works with Apple's Magic Mouse? [alert admin]

File Buddy 9.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Not the one-stop utility I was hoping for
Rant... I tried File Buddy in the hope it would let me fix a bunch of files' invalid permissions. No such luck. The permissions tags came up empty in FB's Info window with no way to change them. I downloaded BatChmod (freeware) and that did the job beautifully. And Snow Leopard compatibility??? FileBuddy was ahead of the pack in the 1990's but it's been stagnant in recent years... probably for most of us not worth the price. Sorry, SkyTag! I'll stick with free utilities that get the job done versus $40 commercial software with registration problems (see Pendragon's comment) that doesn't work as well as the free stuff. [alert admin]

Wake550 0.4 (Mac OS X)
I just learned about this app from a thread at MacOSXhints: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20020220095929695 There are other ways to accomplish the same task, but none so elegant or simple. Wake550 beats running downstairs to turn on my headless Mini every time I want to VNC into it. Thanks. [alert admin]

CommentEd 1.1 (Mac OS X)
This program may have been useful in its day, but it doesn't run at all on my PowerBook G4 with OS 10.4.9. It just quits immediately after each launch. [alert admin]

VisualHub 1.23 (Mac OS X)
VisualHub is a great little program. It has one significant shortcoming with regard to EyeTV recordings: the audio is consistently about 4 seconds delayed on all shows. I found a reliable work-around, which is to export the EyeTV shows in MPEG2_PS format, then drag those exported files into VisualHub. It works every time. I just wish this extra step weren't necessary. Other than for this minor gripe I love VisualHub. [alert admin]

Trash Locked Files 1.1 (Mac OS X)
I made the mistake of dragging a Desktop DB file that somehow became visible on an external drive into the trash. The file disappeared and it refused to let the trash empty. TLF 1.1 fixed the problem in a couple moments. Thanks to the author of this great little utility. My problem is solved. [alert admin]

MagiCal 1.09r2 (Mac OS X)
I was about to request a different time format when I noticed the following information in the FAQ: "You are not restricted to using the formats in the list. You can type whatever format string you like into the date/time format drop-downs. Just use the examples in the list as a guide, then mix and match the elements in those to create your desired format. If you can't work out how to get the format you want, contact us and we'll help you." As I wrote above, thie is really useful software. I'm sending in my donation! [alert admin]

In addition to the details I provided above, I determined that MagiCal was causing my two Intel Mac Minis (both on OS 10.6.2) to fail to sleep. Removing MagiCal solved the sleep problem. I notified Charcoal Design of these issues and offered to beta test future releases. I have no problem with MagiCal 1.1r1 on my PowerBook G4 under OS 10.5.8, nor on my G4 Mac Mini under 10.4.11.

Oops -- false alarm. MenuMeters started working following a second restart. I'm not sure what the hangup was. This is great Mac software by any measure!

Could there possibly be a more onerous registration process? Possibly, but only if FileBuddy were a Microsoft product. If $40 for limited usefulness software weren't bad enough, SkyTag seems determined to scare away any remaining customers with this registration nonsense. After reviewing the software, I think I'll pass. Lower the price by half and fix the registration problems and I'll take another look at FileBuddy. Until then, good luck!

I agree with the request for turbo.264 support. VisualHUB's custom trimming options let me remove overscan, which EyeTV cannot do. Turbo.264 encoding in VisualHUB would be the best of both worlds... speed and beauty.

Thanks, Jon, for all your hard work over the years. I've been a registered D.F. user since OS 8.x days. Before that, I was a registered Boomerang & Super-Boomerang user. I'm glad Apple left well enough alone and didn't steal your business as they have done others'. That speaks volumes about Apple's respect for your work. I agree with the OP. The gray theme harkens back to Iron Curtain days. A less…

Same for me. It takes up space in the Menu bar but does nothing else. It worked great on my CoreDuo Mac Mini through OS 10.4.9 (never installed 10.4.10.) I hope it gets fixed, but no huge rush... I only use CoreDuoTemp occasionally.

HexEdit's Read Me document explains exactly what to do with this situation. It's Apple's fault, not HexEdit's. The solution: Download RCDefaultApp from VersionTracker, install it, then open the DefaultApps pane in System Preferences. Click on the 'Extensions' tab and make sure ".dmg" links to DiskImageMounter.app. You shouldn't have any more problem with disk images launching HexEdit after making this change.

It happens to all of us. This is a longstanding VersionTracker bug. Send a notification to VT support and they'll fix it for you. Nice, helpful people, but it shouldn't be necessary to pester them every time. (VT, PLEASE FIX THE BUG!)

I can't remember the last time someone stepped up the plate and admitted a misstatement so tactfully. Bravo! (Now if only our national politicians could take note.) I look forward to trying this program out to see if it's SoundStudio's replacement. From what people are writing here, it may be just that.

One further comment... you might want to try pearLyrics instead of Harmonic. P.L. works great regardless of how you choose to organize your musicians' names. An added bonus is it comes with both an app and a widget, so you can take your pick which one you prefer. Unfortunately pearLyrics has been removed from VersionTracker. It's still available through MacUpdate and other places around the web.
