Wake550 0.4 (Mac OS X)

Great program!

I just learned about this app from a thread at MacOSXhints: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20020220095929695 There are other ways to accomplish the same task, but none so elegant or simple. Wake550 beats running downstairs to turn on my headless Mini every time I want to VNC into it. Thanks. [alert admin]

CommentEd 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Crashes repeatedly

This program may have been useful in its day, but it doesn't run at all on my PowerBook G4 with OS 10.4.9. It just quits immediately after each launch. [alert admin]

VisualHub 1.23 (Mac OS X)

A-V synch problems

VisualHub is a great little program. It has one significant shortcoming with regard to EyeTV recordings: the audio is consistently about 4 seconds delayed on all shows. I found a reliable work-around, which is to export the EyeTV shows in MPEG2_PS format, then drag those exported files into VisualHub. It works every time. I just wish this extra step weren't necessary. Other than for this minor gripe I love VisualHub. [alert admin]

Trash Locked Files 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Worked like a charm...

I made the mistake of dragging a Desktop DB file that somehow became visible on an external drive into the trash. The file disappeared and it refused to let the trash empty. TLF 1.1 fixed the problem in a couple moments. Thanks to the author of this great little utility. My problem is solved. [alert admin]

MagiCal 1.09r2 (Mac OS X)

First rate software!

I was about to request a different time format when I noticed the following information in the FAQ: "You are not restricted to using the formats in the list. You can type whatever format string you like into the date/time format drop-downs. Just use the examples in the list as a guide, then mix and match the elements in those to create your desired format. If you can't work out how to get the format you want, contact us and we'll help you." As I wrote above, thie is really useful software. I'm sending in my donation! [alert admin]

Camino 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

A great Mac browser keeps getting better.

Camino 1.1 promises even better days ahead.... But for people who prefer to wait for the v.1.1 bugs to get worked out, 1.0.4 is rock stable. [alert admin]

iDupe 1.9.2 (Mac OS X)

Doesn't work on iPods

I downloaded iDupe to address numerous duplicate tracks on my iPod, without having any duplicates in my source iTunes library. This iPod track duplication occurs often when an iPod is NOT set to synch automatically -- for instance when I don't want content removed from my iPod when I plug it into different Macs. Changing lyrics text in iTunes results in iPod track duplication when I drag entire genrae from my iTunes library to my iPod. Unfortunately neither iDupe nor iTunes has the ability to remove the earlier (unedited lyrics) tracks from my iPod except one-at-a-time. I expect this is a limitation of how iPods store their track info. Still, here's an important future feature for iDupe -- iPod duplicate track removal. iDupe doesn't (yet) meet my needs. Portable VLC 0.8.5 r2.0 (Mac OS X)

Struggling to understand...

Sorry to be obtuse, but I don't understand the concept of Portable VLC. Is it for people who visit computer labs where the Mac is locked down? Who else is it for? [alert admin]

Data Rescue II 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Will full Intel support be a paid update?

I am trying to decide whether to purchase Data Rescue II now or wait until it has full Intel CPU and hard drive GUID Partition Scheme functionality. Wha does the Intel update path look like? Thanks. [alert admin]

File Buddy 8.1.11 (Mac OS X)

Intel Mac compatibility?

Does anybody know a timeframe for FB to be a universal binary? Will that be a paid update? What about Rosetta compatibility? Thanks. [alert admin]

Turbo.264

I agree with the request for turbo.264 support. VisualHUB's custom trimming options let me remove overscan, which EyeTV cannot do. Turbo.264 encoding in VisualHUB would be the best of both worlds... speed and beauty.

Dark theme...

Thanks, Jon, for all your hard work over the years. I've been a registered D.F. user since OS 8.x days. Before that, I was a registered Boomerang & Super-Boomerang user. I'm glad Apple left well enough alone and didn't steal your business as they have done others'. That speaks volumes about Apple's respect for your work. I agree with the OP. The gray theme harkens back to Iron Curtain days. A less…

Does not work with Leopard!

Same for me. It takes up space in the Menu bar but does nothing else. It worked great on my CoreDuo Mac Mini through OS 10.4.9 (never installed 10.4.10.) I hope it gets fixed, but no huge rush... I only use CoreDuoTemp occasionally.

hassles with disk images

HexEdit's Read Me document explains exactly what to do with this situation. It's Apple's fault, not HexEdit's. The solution: Download RCDefaultApp from VersionTracker, install it, then open the DefaultApps pane in System Preferences. Click on the 'Extensions' tab and make sure ".dmg" links to DiskImageMounter.app. You shouldn't have any more problem with disk images launching HexEdit after making this change.

Sorry for the multiple uploads!

It happens to all of us. This is a longstanding VersionTracker bug. Send a notification to VT support and they'll fix it for you. Nice, helpful people, but it shouldn't be necessary to pester them every time. (VT, PLEASE FIX THE BUG!)

I stand corrected

I can't remember the last time someone stepped up the plate and admitted a misstatement so tactfully. Bravo! (Now if only our national politicians could take note.) I look forward to trying this program out to see if it's SoundStudio's replacement. From what people are writing here, it may be just that.

Needs improvement

One further comment... you might want to try pearLyrics instead of Harmonic. P.L. works great regardless of how you choose to organize your musicians' names. An added bonus is it comes with both an app and a widget, so you can take your pick which one you prefer. Unfortunately pearLyrics has been removed from VersionTracker. It's still available through MacUpdate and other places around the web.

Needs improvement

I agree with Perser's comment. All my music is arranged by last names so that Bach comes before Brahms, and Springsteen comes before Supertramp. The exception is bands whose group name uses multiple words, for instance Steely Dan is under "S" and Pink Floyd is under "P". The distinction here is that Dan and Floyd are not band members's names. The Last name - First name system makes better sense in a large…

Urgently needs rules for code injections!

I agree this is a problem that limits the usefulness of Code Injection alerts. Default Folder is another mainstream app that gives lots of injection warnings. I'd like an "allow always" option for individual trusted programs, such as Default Folder, to work without all the warnings.

Seriously great product!

Your statement that "You'll need two Macs to use Data Rescue, Firewire'd together" is not correct. I bought DR-II last month and it ran just fine on my PowerBook G4. I think what you probably mean is you'll need a bootable volume (for instance the DR-II CD) to start from if your internal HD is dead, and an attached target volume for recovered files. One way to do this is with target…
