GarageRemote 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Awesome & Well-Needed.

This is the missing link to make your M-Audio keyboard complete in Garageband. Take those transport buttons on your Oxygen, Audium, or Ozone keyboard and put them to good use. This software should be included, it is so clearly needed. Just take note to use the following codes (All M-Audio Keyboards): |< B0 17 7F F7 << B0 15 7F F7 > B0 18 7F F7 >> B0 16 7F F7 () B0 14 7F F7 • B0 19 7F F7 For others, see the site. [alert admin]

Mountain Tanks 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)

A timeless concept immaculately executed.

Mountain Tanks is a beautiful 3-D version of a Scorched Earth or Worms style game. Essentially an artillery trajectory game, this version is visually stunning and cleanly executed. Anyone can pick it up and play, and playing with a friend, in person or over a network is what it's all about. The developer is extremely responsive--offering a rebuild for a bug within literally minutes of my reporting it (although your results, it's fair to say, may very). This game is a must try. DVArchive 3.1 (Mac OS X)

A less invasive fix.

My previous fix overcompensates by reverting back to Java 1.4.2. For an equally quick but much less invasive solution to using DVArchive while leaving Java 1.5.0 as the default, see: http://www.dvarchive.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2668 [alert admin]

DVArchive 3.1 (Mac OS X)

Fix for Java 1.5.

DVArchive requires Java is set to 1.4.2, even if you ran the upgrade. To tell the operating system to go back to java 1.4.2, follow the following steps. Open Applications/Terminal Enter: cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions Enter: ls -l CurrentJDK The terminal should reply with the following, showing your current Java version is set to 1.5.0: lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5 May 11 16:36 CurrentJDK -> 1.5.0 Enter: sudo rm CurrentJDK Enter: sudo ln -s 1.4.2 CurrentJDK The terminal should reply with the following showing your current java is set back to version 1.4.2: lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5 May 12 09:47 CurrentJDK -> 1.4.2 Done! Reversing the process sets you back to CurrentJDK 1.5.0, should you require it. [alert admin]

Apple iWeb 1.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Amazing Layout Tools, Despite Imperfections

Don't Listen to the techies. iWeb is the easiest tool to create complex and elegent web-pages. Yes, it's limited, and no, you can't really hand-edit html with it--but if you are hand-editing html, you don't really need this app. This Application allows for novices to create visually stunning web-pages with zero html experience. In that, it is an amazing tool and creates more complex layouts more simply than any other WYSIWYG tool. Site management, spelling, easy color and layout changes (drag and drop tables!) are all built-in and elegant. Not perfect, not yet, but if you want to create simple and elegant pages to share pictures and information, you won't find an eaiser and less expensive tool to do it. Another genius iApp from Apple, and totally functional in 1.0, if limited and a bit buggy. I expect iWeb to change the Web the way Garageband has changed music and iPhoto has changed Photos. I look forward to it's future development but rate it ***** to make up for what I perceive as early wicked and unforgiving (or unforgivable) negative reviews. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Mobile 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Motorola ROKR E1 compatible...

...essentially the same as the RAZR hardware-wise. That said, it works as advertized. Concise, compatible, easy to use, excellent comparative bandwidth usage. Nice one-stop shop for checking up on VT. The kind of freeware app I'm likely to use frequently. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 6.0 (Mac OS X)

A full point update? Maybe not. But it's free and improves video handling...

I upgraded, and everything works fine, looks fine, and behaves as usual with third party multiple library apps (like the fantastic shareware iTunes Library Manager). What is improved and noticably different is the new video entry and, I imagine, integration with the new round of video-capable ipods. My videos look great, are thumbnailed from closer to the middle (as to avoid plain black or white previews), and work no matter the format (quicktime/plugin compatible). That pleases me. I'm not aware of any changes to the drm policy, only it's code to include new rights assigned to videos. As far as I can tell, as an avid iTunes Music purchaser since the store's inception, they've balanced the needs of the consumer and the needs of the creator better than anyone, and I have no problem sharing my music between my three computers native and others locally through sharing, as well as a Motorola ROKR E1, two shuffles, and to second generation 20G iPods. Cool beans. [alert admin]

Apple PowerBook G4 Graphics Update 1.0 (Mac OS X)

No problems before, no problems now.

Software update found the update, I installed it and rebooted, and everything seems fine, from Quartz rendering to Battlefield 1942 + Desert Combat. Not quite as much of a 3D machine as a G5, no doubt, but not bad for something portable and Mac (PB 15" 1.67GHZ + 1MB RAM). The update functioned as it was intended as far as I can tell, and I'm happy to see that Apple doesn't rest after a machine is released. Misrepresented however as shareware. [alert admin]

MouseZoom 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Tiger, no problem. The cure for cats of all sizes!

This is a must for anyone who finds the built in preference pane limited for controlling the speed of your mouse or trackpad. Easy to use, easy to undo, works with Tiger even though it hasn't been altered in a couple or three years. It's perfect, why change it? [alert admin]

MAMP 1.0b (Mac OS X)

More usable than Apple's own Personal Web Sharing

Wow. MAMP has made me very happy. Frustrated with problems and limitations within Apple's built in Personal Web Sharing, I was looking for a better, more easy to customize webserver. Enter MAMP. Mac Friendly, easy as heck to set up, use, and uninstall (but I doub't you'll want to do that). Amazing freeware at it's best, and so simple everyone who wants to serve php/mysql, or just plain old http should try it. Works well with Tiger. [alert admin]

Java 1.5?

Or, to specify the solution (specifying Java 1.4.2):

Open Applications/Terminal

Enter: cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions

Enter: ls -l CurrentJDK

lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5 May 11 16:36 CurrentJDK -> 1.5.0
Enter: sudo rm CurrentJDK

Enter: sudo ln -s 1.4.2 CurrentJDK
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5 May 12 09:47 CurrentJDK -> 1.4.2
Done!

Security

You don't need an administrator password to add a file to your own Library, but you do to add one to the root Library. Install for all users and it will require a password. This is no more a security issue than not requiring a password to install a widget is a security issue.

iPhoto 4 DIRECT to 5.0.1 possible?

This release purports to have repaired the problems with updating, so I'd install iLife '05 and run software update before running iPhoto '05. Of course, you ought to back up your library if possible, but this release ought to fix it. If you want to be doubly sure, repair the library in 4 before upgrading to '05 (which also creates a new copy leaving you with a perfect backup), by holding down shift, option, and…

ho hum

Funny you should complain about the lack of printed documentation while lauding the virtues of Reason, Pro-Tools, and the like, which provide minimal documentation in-package. Most of the documentation for those applications is in digital form, just as it is with Garageband. Although I agree the documentation could have been a bit more thourough, for the price, you have to admit this is an amazing piece of software that does a great deal and is…
