Jaikoz Audio Tagger 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)

Eh

I downloaded this for its integration with musicbrainz. (I have some mystery songs that I want tagged properly.) I found this program vastly inferior to ieatbrainz in that respect. The interface and appearance are typical of a java app; not very pretty or mac-like, but not horrible. I think this is the downfall of most java apps: In an effort to work in all platforms, they don't really excel on any of them. Jaikoz has a large assortment of settings you can--and probably should--modify. I personally like this aspect, but some may find it intimidating. The settings are certainly non-intuitive and not mac-like. Since there is no all-in-one tagger, musicbrainz lookup, art graber that I can tolerate, this might have some some use in the future. As of now, however, I don't see any reason to use this over similar products that have superior interfaces. [alert admin]

Poker Ghost 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Superb

I buy very little shareware, but this is one of them. It is basically a deluxe odds calculator, and is extremely well made. The program prominantly displays the odds that you have the best hand, and also gives intelligent probabilities (eg. you have a 40% chance of getting a straight.) The program calculates the odds for your hand vs all numbers of players (2-10); you can quickly select between number of active hands without requiring a recalculation. The appearance is elegant; small and efficient but cute. The interface is a little slow, since you need to enter the various cards, but i really see no way to avoid that without accessing current game data. Hopefully I'll get used to entering the cards quickly and I won't even notice i'm doing it. The developer is very responsive, replying to my email within an hour. Well worth $15. [alert admin]

iSquint 1.2 (Mac OS X)

on my top 10

iSquint is awesome. I used to use ffmpegX for making ipod video, but isquint actually works better. i can't explain why, seems like they shuold be the same, but isquint outputs videos that work better. and the interface could not be easier, which is obviously not true of ffmpegX, great as it is. plus, the author's jokes are actually funny. usually, playful readme files annoy me, but this guy/girl is actually comical. Blizzard Starcraft Brood War 1.12 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

best......game......ever

how incredible is it that blizzard not only continues to fix bugs and provide support, but also adds new features after some 8 years?? what other game has had this sort of longevity? i guess part of that has to do with blizzard refusing to release a starcraft 2 ..... ;-P [alert admin]

theConcept 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Agreed: needs more scope

This app seems implemented well, looks neat and clean, is small and snappy, and has decent introductory documentation. I've tried researching a variety of topics with this, and do not see how its utility. As is, it only searches the web w/ a google search then returns a huge list of keywords that relate to the search. Here's the problem: if I'm new to the search topic, I want a single source to introduce me to it, which is what google does. If I know the topic well and am doing in-depth searching, I could generate a better, more relevant list of keywords myself (in less time, btw). I could then google those keywords myself, which is all this does anyway. The only value I can see in this program is in doing lots of parallel searches on related words. In that case, this does it all in one step. As is, however, there is far too much noise in the resulting keys, confusing the newcomer and annoyting the veteren. HOWEVER, if this app was able to dig through abstracts at PubMed, ISI, Compendex and the like (as mentioned by previous review), as well as google, and then summaraize them all in a single index, it would make a wealthy man out of the developer. PoddumFeeder 1.11 (Mac OS X)

Just needs a few fixes

I like this slightly better than ipodderx, and the price is much better. Unfortunately, it is currently unusable since it locks up during downloads. That is unacceptable. 4 or 5 stars and my registration $ once that is fixed. [alert admin]

EndNote 7.0 (Mac OS X)

Gets the job done

Yeah, endnote has its share of problems, but thats what you get when you try to integrate with MS. Why is anyone using Office 2004 over the much faster and more stable 10.1.x anyway? I won't be updating either for a while. Not untill MS releases its imminent bug fixes and endnote takes them all into account. Endnote saves me tons of time and I don't have any freeze-up problems others have described, though is does slow things down at times. [alert admin]
