TechTool Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Be sure and let us know...

...if this is the version of TTP4 that (finally) won't cause some form of permanant damage to your computer? Seriously, how this company remains in business (and not in litigation) is a mystery to me. For the record, I haven't used the product in years, having learned my lesson and bought Diskwarrior instead. Not that DW is perfect, but I've never lost an entire disk thanks to its helpful efforts. Secret of Mana RAM Editor 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Does what it says...

It works, it's free... closes in an error now and again, but only by entering incorrect information into the wrong fields. The help system explains exactly how to work the program, so such errors can be avoided. Not bad. [alert admin]

Delicious Library 1.6.2 (Mac OS X)

A great app, with a few issues

I love this program, so much that I bought the bluetooth scanner they offer with it. But this love doesn't blind me to the problems with the program. I tried to export my library from my desktop to my laptop (seeing as my laptop has bluetooth and my desktop does not) but the pictures (many of my items didn't have amazon pictures) were not exported also. While this may cut down on export file size, it was a huge hassle finding the icons all over again (I should have just copied over the entire library file). The stability could use some work too, as it crashed out more than once when I'd load several dozen items at once from the bluetooth scanner. This happened mainly when it couldn't find the barcode for an item on Amazon. One would think they'd allow other databases to be used for less-known products, or as a backup when an Amazon lookup fails.

Even with all that, I still rate the program as worth buying, as my problems are likely not shared by everyone. It's a touch expensive given the stability issue, but I love the organizational scheme (which isn't perfect either, but I don't expect Delicious Monster to deliver the stars as well as the sun and the moon) and the borrower feature. I'm sure the stability issue will eventually be addressed; they had good communication when I emailed them, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Besides, it's a fun program with which to wow people. [alert admin]

Phoenix X 1.9.5 (Mac OS X)

A Fine Program

I've used this for years, and never had any problems. LJ's own update screen is much improved these days, so this program is not as necessary as it once was, but the interface is too nice to give up completely. [alert admin]

Bubblegym 0.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Not Bad.

Fun? Not really. But very fascinating. The price is... well, it's fine, for what it is. I don't regret buying it. But I'll probably never use it again. Still, for what it is, it merits a high rating. [alert admin]

SideTrack 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Sidetrack and the new Powerbooks

I've used Sidetrack for only a few months, and I've found that it is absolutely essential in order for me to tolerate apple's UI quirks. The continued lack of a single motion right-click used to drive me out of my mind and forced me to invest in expensive third party mice before I discovered this little driver. It is worth every penny- and I'd have paid three times as much for it. With Apple's new trackpads, they add scrolling ability, but I've yet to read anything about a right-click like we get with Sidetrack. Even if they have it, Sidetrack will always have a place with the older generation of PowerBooks and iBooks since it seems like Apple plans not to give those of us with older systems a driver update. The corner taps, the button assignment- this is the driver Apple should have bundled with new machines. I only hope the developer can find a way to add the two finger scroll to Sidetrack and completely nullify the advantage of the new trackpads. I think I read that Apple is trying to patent this, though, and it's also possible that hardware limitations will prevent this. Even if they can't, this program remains an unsung necessity for everyone with an older Apple laptop [alert admin]

iFlash 2.1.2 (Mac OS X)

iFlash

Hyperbole aside, I can't praise this application enough. It's not without a handful of quirks and bugs, but they are completely eclipsed by the sheer usefulness of the product. I got this program after overhearing people praising it, and I've decided that this was one of the most serendipitous events of my academic career. I've been never been able to study effectively with flash cards but this program makes it easy, even letting me export decks to my iPod allowing the mobile study typically denied by a computer program. This program is worth much more than the $10 the author charges, and I'm just glad I got it before he wises up and raises the price. Anyone who studies a foreign language can benefit from this, and I highly recommend that they try it. Heh, I sound like a sales pitch. [alert admin]

xBack 3.3 (Mac OS X)

Let's Be Fair

This product has several advantages over the freeware utilities that do the same thing. The largest advantage, though, is the most important; it's supported. That's why it doesn't crash Expose and why it works with 10.3, unlike just about every other utility. It has an intuitive interface, and it's stable. As OSX changes, xBack keeps up with it. This utility is maligned and given unfair one-star ratings because it costs money. Well, if you don't want to pay for it, type the terminal command every time you want a desktop screensaver. It's certainly not hard. Me, I'll pay a little for convenience and the stability denied me by the freeware apps. [alert admin]

USB Overdrive X 10.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Under 10.2.4, this…

latest version of USBO (10.2.2) caused kernel panics when used with my Logitech MX 700 Cordless Optical mouse. Every single time I'd try and shut down or restart, I'd get a panic, and they'd come along at random times as well. After I removed USBO, problem solved, and everything is peachy. [alert admin]

Spaceward Ho! 5.0.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

This is a…

fantastic game. I originally thought that $40 was too much for it, as do many others. However, after buying it and playing it online, I see why it costs $40. It's worth it, pure and simple. Of course, I wouldn't mind it if they dropped the price to $30 (even though I've already paid) simply because I think that $40 price tag scares away some people. [alert admin]

Be sure and let us know...

DW may have saved my butt more than once, but I don't really recommend that product either (having seen it freeze in mid-repair). It hasn't destroyed a disk that I've owned, though, so that places it slightly higher on the totem pole than TTP4 (or TTD, for that matter) for me. I suppose it's the lesser of two evils (three evils if you count Norton Utilities, which I don't as that product goes beyond the…

Be sure and let us know...

Having not used it (in any meaningful way, outside of the laughable Techtool Deluxe included with my Apple extended warranties) in years is the reason I chose to comment on the product and not rate the product. As to whether my comment is worthless, well, that's really up to the reader to decide, isn't it? If Micromat has (finally) produced a worthwhile and stable product, then that should overshadow any negative comment that I've…

Not a bug.

I'm not sure that's a bug. I read that Apple changed the filenames of music loaded into iPods specifically to thwart programs like this. ID3 tags seem to survive, but the filenames do not. So if the song file has no ID3 tag... well, you get the picture. I'm sure it's annoying, but what can one do... complain to Apple?
