OmniDiskSweeper 1.5.1 beta 1 (Mac OS X)

Great Program, but there's a free alternative

This program works great, I've been using it for years, but I found myself using the (completely) free alternatie "WhatSize" recently. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21149 [alert admin]

SpamSieve 2.4.4 (Mac OS X)

Couldn't use e-mail without this

I guess with its current status this doesn't need another 5-star rating, but I like it so much I want to give one anyway :-) I use some e-mail addresses which have been around for more than 10 years and I get insane amounts of spam. E-mail would basically be unusable for me without SpamSieve. It kills several hundred spam messages every day and it's months between false positives and I usually get a false negative once every few days. I am still amazed at how precisely it filters out spam. Integration into Apple Mail is flawless. The program is so rock solid and unobstrusive that I usually forget that it's there. Documentation is excellent but you'll never need it anyway. There are frequent updates and every version so far worked great. I have been using this instead of the Apple Mail Junk filter for years and can highly recommend it. [alert admin]

GarageSale 2.4.5 (Mac OS X)

Product great, support issues with program bugs

The program is great and generally works well for me. However I can confirm what someone else wrote earlier: I encountered a program bug (it would only display the very first of a list of ebay system error messages and silently drop the others) and support was really unhelpful. I got so frustrated that I wanted to get my money back. I sent 15 messages over the course of 2 weeks and I had to push them constantly. Of all the replies I got, a lot contained totally unhelpful suggestions, or stuff that plainly could not work if they had looked at the past conversation. They blamed unrelated stuff like my Internet connection. It was as if I had to restate the entire case with every message. In the end they basically said, "sorry, we can't help you any more". Then I pushed some more and that was the first time I got a useful answer. I got a terminal command to raise the program's log level, and from the log output (which included the ebay system error messages which were suppressed in the GUI) the problem's cause was immediately obvious. So in conclusion, the product is good and I still recommend it, it's easy to use and has nice templates, but if you ever need to get support, you should be prepared to spend some time and energy... Five stars for Ease Of Use and the price, one star for support and four for the rest... [alert admin]

iPodDisk 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Awesome!

I love this, I wish I had heard about it earlier. What a cool and elegant trick to mount a virtual WebDAV volume... I am going to donate right away, I can't believe this is freeware :-) [alert admin]

Quartz Extreme Check 1.2 (Mac OS X)

mouse shadow doesn't tell.

mark_ringenoldus: That's simply *wrong*. The mouse cursor has a shadow when the card supports cursor shadows. It supports Quartz Extreme when the chipset / bus / video memory meet the requirements. Yes, these two often come together on modern cards. No, it is not *always* the case, so the mouse shadow is not a reliable indicator! [alert admin]

Quartz Extreme Check 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Some more information:…

A friend with 16MB / Radeon video hardware on a Titanium PowerBook who uses a second external screen regularly just informed me that the program indicates active acceleration with just the built-in screen but no acceleration on both screens when the second one is active. And the mouse pointer shadow is there *all the time*. [alert admin]

Different version?

Version 2.4 is in preparation, but it was not intended for publication yet because I wanted a smaller number of people to test it first before pushing it out via the auto-update mechanism. I don't know how Versiontracker picked it up, because I didn't file an update request with them. You can try 2.4 here and if you do please let me know how well it works: http://www2.entropy.ch/download/Album%20Artwork%20Assistant%202.4.zip

It seems my hosting provider had a service interruption at that time, it should work again now...

XML Import fails

That sounds like the file you're using has a special encoding, like 16-bit unicode. Try opening it in other text editors and see if it behaves there in a strange way too. Where did you create or get that file from?
