Sophos Anti-Virus 7.1.0 (Mac OS X)

So far - not impressed

I just installed this and after figuring out that the download installs another installer that must be run I got it working. First Scan so far detected over 2.4 million files - in the first two hours of scanning it has processed somewhere around 5,000 of those files - meaning that it should be done scanning the first time through in about a month or so. In the first couple hours it has encountered 9 errors - all of a type unrecognized file format or corrupt file - the files which it has listed as unrecognized or corrupt are of the following types: .gz .sit .dmg .cab .rar .app ( Firefox.app ) granted a couple of them are Windows files - but they are on an external hard drive - and I do not see anyway to tell the app to scan only the internal hard drive - I think I downloaded the Mac only version of the software - however, at least half of those files are Mac OS files. Since I started typing this message the scanner has picked up and is processing files faster than before - almost 40,000 scanned now - so maybe it will only take a week rather than a month to complete one scan. VueScan 8.4.01 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Latest version will not install

Love the ap - have been using it for years with a couple different scanner on both Mac and Windows - tried to install the lastest windows version and the installer failed and now even the previously installed version will not run - will have to try again after a reboot - but cannot do that until later. Bits on Wheels 1.0 PR1.2 (Mac OS X)

Nice interface - needs some tweaks

I like the various view options and level of detail provided - however, even when I manuall set my external IP address - the tracker I use was still displaying my internal IP address and then only allowed 2 peers to connect - which obviously limits the overall doenload speed - BitTorrent 4.0.1 connects to more peers and automatically uses my external IP address. not sure if setting port forwarding on my airport will help - of course - airport cannot forward a range of ports [alert admin]

VueScan 8.1.39 (Mac OS X)

I'll second that

very well put Kironi - it has always amazed me that anyone takes the time to complain that VueScan is updated too often. Might be a different story if the updates were required or you had to pay for them. I actually find it somewhat amusing that nearly every time I check version tracker there is a new version of VueScan available. I only download about every fifth version - and in some cases download two or three versions that I never even use to scan annything since I can go for months without needing to scan anything then will need to scan a bunch of stuff. Since version 7.whatever I have seen many improvements in the product and while I first bought it to use with a scanner unsupported by the OEM - I now use it with a scanner whose software has not been updated since before I bought it. And as has been pointed out here before Hamrick is very repsonsive to his customers - even in cases where the root cause of the problem is not his product. Early on I had some issues with the bundled button manager software and some USB conflicts that Mr Hamrick helped me to resolve. [alert admin]

Ad-Aware SE 1.05 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Thank you Lavasoft

Geeze there are an awful lot of web sites that claim to offer free spyware removal software but what they really mean is free spryware detection software - cannot remove it unless you pay $. I don't necessarily object out right to paying for this service - but what happened to truth in advertising? I have a new laptop provide by my work and was trying to tweak some things like having the caps lock key not be a caps lock key (the behavior of which is really frustrating for a mac user) and I downloaded an installer for a small app that happened to be infected - in a matter of seconds - despite enterprise MacAfee running I was infected with about 42 malware, spyware, adware items which MacAfee detected and blocked to some extenct but not completely and did not remove them. Here I am about 4 hours later nearly recovered from the problem and a little bit concerned that there might still be something on my system that should not be or that some of my personal info has been stolen. A recent security update on the Mac OS presents a dialog whenever an application runs on yoru system for the first time asking your permission to let it run - this may not be perfect - especially if you are not in the habit of reading all your dialogs but at least gives you a chance to say I didn't ask a program to run - what's going on. IP Scanner 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

What about multiple subnets?

I use internet sharing to another machine and need to use Timbuktu to remotely operate it but need to have the IP address and there does not seem to be an easay way to get it - Timbuktu's built-in scanner also does not loo outside the current primary subnet. [alert admin]

Apple Bluetooth firmware 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Update did not update for me

I suppose I would have held off had I read some of these posts first - my experience - Bluetooth Firmware Updater 1.2 cycles endlessly between Searching for device... preparing to update... and idle. Then warns not updated. Perhaps good that I did not complete if it woudl result in problems. [alert admin]

RailModeller 2.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Works well - could be improved

I have been using this app now for about 1 week and have used it to design my own Railset for 3" wide 2 lane slot car track - primarily for a layout involing slot car and HO scale train. The Railset editor takes a bit to learn but once I did it was easy to use. I would like to see multiple layers. I would have preferred a coordinate system for polygons that has +x,+y coordinates above the zero line instead of below - but that is easy enough to adjust for. I would like to see the ability to have a My Inventory Qty for any given part along with qty of parts required with a shoping list of the difference. I will be submitting my railset to the developer's website for posting - I decided that even though I have only Tyco track to make it more generic and include AFX, MM, and Life-Like parts as well. the incomplete layout that I am working on can be viewed at: http://homepage.mac.com/mattwolanski/SlotCarTrack.jpg [alert admin]

So far - not impressed

Follow up - completed first scan in about 6 hours - no threats found - 100 errors - files identified as corrupt include Finder.app, Internet Explorer.app, Mail.app, Safari.app - a number of Adobe apps and Adobe uninstaller, .sit files, a number of Quicken related files.
