Boinx FotoMagico 2.2 (Mac OS X)
Creates lovely slide shows but only decently viewable on a Macintosh
When you burn to DVD, whether through iDVD or Toast, you get something that's totally unviewable. Using iDVD, I also wasn't able to select the "TV safe area" so we landed up with most of the outside parts of our photos cut off when I played my trial slide show through our TV. I didn't bother finding out what it looked like on our 8-fit screen; the poor results were only too visible on my Mac screen. Maybe the developer needs to develop his own burning program, one that doesn't crunch files that don't need crunching to fit onto a DVD. Few people can lug their Macintosh around with them just to show their family and friends the slide show they created of the wedding photos. [alert admin]

Photo to Movie 4.1.5 (Mac OS X)
I like what it does but it's a pain to use
With the previous version I tried I thought it was just that my 1.8 G5 isn't fast or powerful enough for this program, but I see other people with very fast machines are also experiencing the jerkiness. I want something that can do what Photo to Movie does, using large files (I want to be able to watch them on an 8-ft screen as well as my TV) and burning to DVD without crunching them so badly they are unviewable even on a small screen. I tried FotoMagico, which I liked very much, but the only way a decent slide show could be created needed the use of a Macintosh. Only one other member of my family has one. [alert admin]

QuarkXPress 8.0 (Mac OS X)
Fascinating following all this discussion
I haven't used Quark since, I think, version 4 and didn't get very well acquainted with it, but I did decide I liked it better than PageMaker (which I'd used from version 1). I now use InDesign CS2 (though so infrequently I get confused because PageMaker is still firmly embedded in my brain *G*) and, judging from the training video that came with it, it looks simple enough to create PDFs for the printer. Obviously it isn't as simple as it looks! Anyway, I'm glad to see Quark is still around., Much as I like Adobe's products (well, most of the time) I definitely wouldn't like to see them become a monopoly. As it is I didn't like hearing of their acquisition of Macromedia. [alert admin]

Bubbles X 0.2 (Mac OS X)
Why would I want a Windows screensaver? The Mac ones do the job more than adequately and anyway I prefer putting my screen to sleep when not in use. [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2007-009 (Mac OS X)
I installed it on two Macs, along with a couple of other updates, and everything went as expected. My only problem was the download time for all the updates. Must have taken well over a day--not all at once of course. But the fault there lies with Telescum (aka Telecom New Zealand) not Apple. [alert admin]

Solitaire 3D 3.10 (Mac OS X)
I was baffled by the comments here
until I hit the download button. After all, the page DOES say the software is shareware. But perhaps the developer should seriously consider changing the name of the program on the download file. I'm not bothered by it but there sure are a lot of grumpy customers here! [alert admin]

Cuckoo 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I had separate chimes for each quarter hour with OS 9 too. I even downloaded a proper clock sound and had that chime as many times as the hour was. But OS X has the ability to tell me what the time is every quarter hour. You soon learn to ignore a mere computer sound--though it's harder to ignore one that repeats--but it's not so easy to miss a voice telling you what the time is! I think I'll stick to the voice. Cyberduck 2.7.3 (Mac OS X)
I used Fetch all the time on OS 9, and continued using it with Classic, but my next Mac (a 1.8 G5) won't have Classic so I've spent a couple of days downloading and trying as many FTP clients as I could find. (A right PITB using Telecom New Zealand's inexcusably bad rural phone lines; Cyberduck took 52 minutes, which is actually very good.) Of the shareware FTP clients I think I liked Yummy best. But Cyberduck does all I want to do and price is a big issue in our household, so I give Cyberduck a double thumbs up. It's given me no trouble on this Quickslver 733 with Panther and I hope it will give none on the G5 with Tiger. :-) [alert admin]

You mean Graphic Converter can make animated slide shows that can be played on any computer or any DVD player (which is more or less what Photo to Movie is all about)?

Yes, I'm puzzled too. The developer has given fairly low machine specs to use his program. I suggest he try making a decent slide show using a G4 processor! It's certainly about time he took notice of users' comments. There are enough saying the same thing!

If I accidentally deleted a playlist from iTunes on my Mac I would retrieve it from my backup rather than my iPod.

Apple is a computer manufacturer first and foremost. It makes most of its profit from the hardware it sells. Why should it let its software be installed on any piece of junk the way Windows is? No wonder people have so much trouble with Windows!

Well, the last thing I would want in ANY game is somebody else's idea of music. If I want music I can set iTunes playing.

"sit" compression files come from the days of Classic OS. Can't remember what it stands for now. You need Stuffit Expander to unstuff them. It's free!

Can't say I like VT or CNet very much either. For a start, it irritates me when a "download now" link doesn't lead me straight to a file ending in .dmg so I can ask Safari to download it in iGetter. That's why I prefer Macupdate.

Try CarbonCopyCloner. It's much cheaper and you can get it to do your backups automatically so you don't even need reminders.
