iPlayer Downloader 3.2 (Mac OS X)

Works very nicely thank you!

I'm having a blast watching BBC shows at my convenience. While I find little worth watching on U.S. television, it seems like there is far too much good programming on the BBC for the time that I have available. Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword is a riot! There ARE some issues with some programs that can't be downloaded, like the Best of Chewing the Fat. They start... then end leaving a zero byte file and a message that it couldn't be downloaded. I second the request for an ITV Player version as well, though it'll probably be more difficult as it appears that they use Microsoft's Silverlight. For those who don't seem to understand otherwise, the U.K. Resident thing isn't a limitation of this program, just has the Hulu Desktop Viewer limitation to U.S. Resident's isn't a limitation of the desktop viewer. It is a restriction put in place at the servers themselves. The BBC (and ITV as well) have restricted the use of their services to U.K. Residents. Hulu.com has done the same with their service but reserving it for U.S. Residents. As the author alludes, there ARE easy ways around it. All you need is a U.K. IP address. How you get it is your business and you're probably breaking the terms of service of the BBC web services. One thing to remember as well... that free UK Proxy service you found... is it legitimate? Or is it run by a couple of teen hackers in their basement while they snag your personal data? [alert admin]

Hulu Desktop 0.9.4 (Mac OS X)

Works very nicely thank you!

I'm not a regular Hulu user, only going there every few weeks. I just downloaded and install the Mac version of Hulu's new desktop software on my 2.4Ghz 17" MacBook Pro with 4GB of ram (late 2007). The picture quality is extremely good, yes it automatically works just fine with my Apple Remote. In fact, the only downside was that at times the video would stutter. This I blame on my network usage rather than the computer or software. My wife is in the other room playing on Second Life and streaming music. Another of my computers is pulling an average of 12-14 Mbps from the newsgroups. all of this on our Cox cable modem's 12 Mbps connection. [alert admin]

Dvd Hunter 0.8.6 (Mac OS X)

Fantastic Program for Freeware

DVD Hunter is what a Mac program should be. Brain-dead simple to install and use. If you've used any of the mainstream applications written for OS X in the past years, then you know how to use DVD Hunter. Click the toolbar button for New Movie, type in the name and click autocomplete. Done. For basic use as most users will need, those are about the only instructions you need. It is when you get into preferences and a few of the more advanced features that you need to go to the author's website and read the brief but thorough documentation. If you just need a free, very good but basic program to keep track of your DVDs, DVD-Rs, VHS tapes, etc. then you need to look no further than DVD Hunter. However, if you are a "power user" or collector you may wish to read further. I'm personally very used to Movie Collector from Collectorz.com which is an extremely good shareware program for Mac and Windows. So in using DVD Hunter, I'm naturally comparing it to Movie Collector which makes for a high standard to compete against. While DVD Hunter is very easy to use and much more "Macish" than Movie Collector, there are a few features missing. Then again, as the author states on the website this IS only the first release. (Or is that the first release of the documentation?) The first feature that I noticed missing was the ability to search using the UPC barcode. HOWEVER, that is not true. Type in (or scan using a barcode reader) the number into the UPC field and click autocomplete and DVD Hunter will fill in the rest. Why I didn't think of that immediately, who knows? After all, it is just filling a different field than the basic instructions I gave at the start of this review. The second feature I noticed missing was (in the terms used by DVD Hunter) autocomplete from IMDB. A field has been defined for the IMDB ID number but other than going to imdb.com and searching for the movie yourself, there is no way to get the info. The third "missing" feature is only really of use to the initial setup or someone who deals with a LOT of media. That is the ability to queue up a list of movies to add. For instance, With Movie Collector, I can take a barcode reader to a stack of retail DVDs and tapes, scan in a number of barcodes then import them so that they are looked up in a batch. This ties rather directly in with the fourth missing feature... the ability to import from other movie collection programs. There IS an Import function on the menu but it appears at this time to be undocumented, perhaps only compatible with files exported from DVD Hunter. None of these "missing" features are show stoppers, nor do they keep DVD Hunter from being a very good program, especially for a first release. The bottom line is that if you want a free, easy to use, basic DVD/Tape cataloging program, then DVD Hunter is an excellent choice. If you want one with more whistles and bells, then perhaps you need to look at one of the other programs, but be prepared to spend a little money. [alert admin]

iCal Dupe Deleter 1.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Does Just What It Says and With Style

Almost brain dead in it's simplicity, the little utility just saved me a lot of work.

Download, copy app to Applications and run.

(Note, there IS documentation that is excellent but probably not needed if you have an IQ over 50 and at least one opposable thumb.) It gives you a list of calendars on your Mac, click one, click "check dupes" if it finds any in that calendar click the DeDupe button. I checked 15 calendars and deleted about 18 duplicated event entries in less than a minute.

How the dupes got there I don't really know. But I've been running multiple macs, pcs and PDAs for years. Between all the syncing via .Mac, Missing Sync, Pocket Mac and Active Sync.... well, you get the idea.

Worth every penny of whatever you donate to this guy and I will be donating! [alert admin]

Second Life 1.12.1.13 (Mac OS X)

Almost Instant Addiction

This world has been around for three years but I just stumbled across a reference to it a week ago and checked it out. While membership is free, I was hooked enough that I went Premium the 2nd day. It DOES need a good 3D video card, speedy computer and a broadband internet connection. Runs very well on my 12" Powerbook 1.25 Ghz G4, my wife's G4 Mini 1.5 Ghz and doesn't run at all on her 12" 800 Mhz G3 iBook (needs the G4 Altavec.) Both of our G4 Macs run it better than my 3 Ghz Pentium D Linux box with an ATI FireGL card and about the same as my 3 Ghz Pentium D Windows XP machine with the Intel Extreme integrated video. There's a little bit of a learning curve to how things work, but the game starts you with a good tutorial on the basics and their website is full of great guides, FAQs and HowTos. (All accessible from within the game too.) If you like interacting with others, letting your imagination run loose and especially if you like to create things rather than shoot them (you can do that too), then check this out and be prepared to have Second Life take over your First Life. ;-) [alert admin]

SQLVue 3.0.0b3 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Nice Idea, Poor Quality

I downloaded SQLVue 3.0.2 Trial Version from LogicalVue Software's website. This version was last updated over a year ago on May 9th of 2005. The website states that 3.0.1 is the latest but the downloaded version is actually 3.0.2. From their website: "The trial version has the same features as the Professional Edition. It works for 15 days, after which SQLVue will run in demo mode. License keys can be purchased from our store." The $49.95 Standard version works with Windows or OS X and either old or new REALDatabase formats (up to 5.5 version). The $149.95 Professional adds support for Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, ODBC and code generation. In a nutshell, SQLVue is touted as a QueryBrowser/Table/Database builder for supported database system. My interest it in was in converting a couple of small MySQL database tables into REALDatabase tables which is one of the advertised features. First I connected to a localhost MySQL server and tried to execute an SQL script I'd generated that'd rebuild the database, tables and content I had a work. The small SQL editor locked up as the script was too large (14,000 record inserts.) So today I went to work and installed the program there figuring I'd just convert the MySQL databases to REALDatabases. I'd choose Connect to Database Server, Choose MySQL, enter the IP address, login, password and database. It'd connect perfectly. However, the main window wouldn't show me that there were any tables in the database and the titlebar tried to tell me that I was connected to an Oracle database! I tried this with several MySQL hosts running various versions of of MySQL from 4.1 to 5.0.x. When I blindly told it to convert to REALDatabase anyway, THEN it showed me the tables! However, it reported errors created the tables, and took awhile to copy the 14,000 records. When finished I had a REALDatabase File containing the sample movie stuff which was NOT what was in the MySQL tables. At this point, I don't care if this IS version 3.x. I not only wouldn't pay $149.95 for it, I wouldn't pay $49.95 for it and I won't use it for free either. As near as I can tell, this is pretty much non-functional software. [alert admin]

Collectorz.com Movie Collector 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Great Surprise!

I bought the Windows version of this program in 2001. I also bought their excellent Book Collector, Music Collector and MP3 Collector programs though to be honest, I really only use the Movie and Book programs. They are the best I found in the Windows world. Now that my wife and I almost 100% Mac, I've been working with DVD Sphere and some other programs trying to decide who gets my money. I'd finally decided to pretty much stick with Movie Collector running under VirtualPC when I discovered that they'd released a native OS X version! I downloaded and installed the shareware version on my 12" Powerbook, and just before buying a key for it, decided that just for grins I'd try the key for my Windows version. It works! When Collectorz.com says "free upgrades to all future versions, I guess they meant it, even across platforms." Due to differences in versions of the databases I couldn't just import my older Windows collection, so I used the XML export/import feature and copied the cover images over on a USB drive. In a matter of minutes all 680 DVDs, VHS tapes, Laser Disks, etc. were cataloged in the Mac version on my Powerbook. The feature list of Movie Collector is long enough that one could almost write a short book about it. It'll search a large number of web based stores (besides Amazon and IMDB), let you set up a queue of titles, codes to search, then come back later and have it add them, handles bar codes and lots more. The 50 movie limit is enough to let you try out all of the features, nothing else is crippled or limited. With over 10X that number of titles, nothing seems any slower so their database engine seems pretty strong. Even if you are in love with another DVD/Movie database package, give this one a fair shot. I feel that you'll like it. It is certainly an example of the best of its kind. BTW, I'm going to rate the Support/Documentation as Excellent only because they constantly update their software. I don't remember ever needing support or reading any documentation or help files. [alert admin]

DockExtender 3.1.3 (Mac OS X)

Never Been a Problem For Me - One of the Best Enhancements

I registered both DockExtender and their virtual Desktop Manager several years ago. DockExtender has been one of my most used and usefull enhancements along with WorkstripX. Having just upgraded from Panther to Tiger I was worried but only the Virtual Desktop manager quit working. DesktopX still performs flawlessly for me and at least ONE of my application hotkeys still works. I'd forgotten that I'd set one for MacJournal (the old 2.6 version back when it was free), accidently hit it today and up came MacJournal. I've never had a trashed dock, don't use custom icons, love the nested folder menus with custom icons and my most used feature of DesktopExtender is the menubar menu with lots of submenus. In fact, I really use it more than the submenus on the dock! All it in all, this has been a very stable application that should benefit anyone from a raw novice to the most application voracious power user. I think that the menu bar menu would be especially helpful (once set up) for someone used to the Start Menu in Microsoft Windows. I can't rate the support though as I've never needed it, and I've barely looked at the documentation/help. So I'm going to give that a neutral rating. [alert admin]

Omniquad AntiSpy 4.2 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Fineprint

I understand everyone's complaints about freeware vs shareware. However, if you go back and read the description again, notice the last line: "You can scan your system absolutely free using Antispy". Yes, you can SCAN for free. They never say that it'll remove the stuff for free. We just bought SpyHunter which worked the same way... it scanned for free, but to remove the spyware, we had to buy the program. Yes, I know, we probably should be at least tried one of the free programs first. Oh well. At least SpyHunter did a great job and has really sped up my wife's computer. [alert admin]

PocketMac Pro 3.3 (Mac OS X)

It worked!

hehe... within a couple of hours of posting here on VersionTracker, I got an answer from the Pocket Mac folks about the activations. They assured that me that it wouldn't be a problem and that getting a new activation would only take a couple of emails. If those emails are a little more timely than this last one and my installation and use of Pocket Mac are all that I expect, then I'll be leaving a glowing review on here in about a week. I'll let you all know either way. [alert admin]

No Power PC version?

Actually, it works on my 12" Powebook G4 (1.33Ghz 1.something GB of ram) It runs a lot better if I switch the program to use the "low" quality stream but still looks good. Too choppy to use, but it DOES run.

Don't make false assumptions . . .

You're suffering from the problem that we in the U.S. encounter when trying to stream video from other countries, like the BBC. Licensing and advertising rules often limit the geographic locations where content may be distributed. It is similar to the Region codes on DVD discs. Hulu is probably licensed ONLY for U.S. distribution so must then limit their viewers to the U.S. or they'd be violating the license and could lose it. …

not working

Happened to me too. the vCard Splitter Applescript inside of the disk image has a .dmg extension. View the file info, remove the .dmg extension, confirm to OS X that you want to do it and it'll revert to an Applescript and work fine.
