BannerZest Pro 1.3 (Mac OS X)

Great product - excellent results

I was on this page to get the update and glanced at the reviews. It seems that only the people who have problems with the program bother to write about it. I've been using it for about a year and appreciate its ability to allow me to create professional looking flash animations quickly and easily. People often ask me how I created the header in my web page. I would like to take more credit - but it is just a matter of selecting the type of slide show, adding the images, adjusting how I want it to appear and publishing. There is a bit of a learning curve. A program that has this power will take 30 minutes or so to understand. But once you get it, you can design and change slide shows in a flash (pun intended). If you do much web design, go for the Pro version. [alert admin]

Fresh 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Great idea well executed

The guys at Ironic Software have made some great software in the past, and this follows in that tradition. It does one thing and that one thing well. It keeps track of the files that you have recently used and downloaded. The program doesn't need to be running to track these changes. There are two parts to this pretty over the top interface. An area that tracks the changed files and a "cooler" where you can store files to refer to later. I'm using a 30" monitor, so I don't know what it looks like on a smaller monitor, but the areas it draws are huge and run across the entire screen. It would be great if there was an option to scale this down. Otherwise it does what is it is supposed to do. [alert admin]

RapidWeaver 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Works fine for me, beautiful new interface

I have been using RapidWeaver for almost a year and find the program to be in the sweet spot of web design: much more powerful than iWeb (and adheres to web standards-unlike iWeb), and not as daunting as Dreamweaver. I appears that a vast majority of Mac produced Web 2.0 sites are created in RapidWeaver. I have not had any problems publishing with the new version. The new interface is gorgeous. It is a great example of using what Leopard has to offer, with its core graphics and core animation. [alert admin]

Nisus Writer Express 3.0 (Mac OS X)

No Thanks

I used Nisus years ago in the pre-system 10 days and loved it. I had quite a few problems with Nisus Writer Express though. I found it unusable. It had lots of bugs. It would place spaces between anything using the ' symbol, such as "Kevin' s." Tech support never answered my requests. Now I find it hard to swallow that if I want a version that works with Leopard, and hopefully fixes the bugs, I need to upgrade to 3. I also have a family license for which there is no upgrade path. I hate Word but it looks like I'm back to it. [alert admin]

Youmehub 2.01.03 (Mac OS X)

Great business tracking software

I have been using this program for about six months and continue to be impressed with its functuality and elegance. I did a lot of research to find a program that would allow me to track my projects and create invoices. Most of the software I reviewed had limited features and was downright ugly. As a designer I wanted a program that filled my needs and was a pleasure to use. I eventually upgraded to the developers version and although I know almost nothing about FileMaker I have been able to customize the program to better suit my needs. I would highly recommend downloading the demo version and take a thorough look at the program. [alert admin]

PDFClerk 2.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Works great! Adds feature I really need.

I create architectural floor plans. My clients like me to send them copies of the 24" X 36" plans in pdf form. CAD programs will not combine sheets into one file. Unlike word processing or other types of files that are one scrolling file, CAD pages print one at a time. It was difficult for my clients to understand why I would have to send them 7 pdfs instead of one. PDF Clerk solves the problem by quickly and easily combining all of the pages into one pdf. Problem solved - no more complaints from clients. [alert admin]

iPod Access 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Followup to last post...

After a week the people at iPod Access finally answered my email and in a one sentence response blamed the problem on Apple. Don't give these guys your money. [alert admin]

iPod Access 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)

BEWARE OF THIS SOFTWARE!!!

I accidentally erased some podcast files from my iTunes library that were still on my iPod. I looked here for a utility that would allow me to transfer those files back from my iPod into iTunes. I saw the positive reviews here for iPod Access and bought the program. I followed the instructions to turn manual syncing on and then went to recover the files. About 8 out of the 40 files came over - and erased the files I already had in iTunes. I gave up and reset the iPod for automatically syncing with the iPod. When I did, all of my playlists doubled. I tried syncing again and now there were 3 copies of each playlist. After ending up with 4 copies of each I selected the playlists in the iTunes playlist column and deleted all but one. Upon syncing again they were duplicated again! So I have had to restore my 80GB iPod, replace my iTunes library of 12,500 songs from a backup, recreate all settings, etc. An 8 hour recovery to try to transfer a few files from my iPod. Stay away from this software! [alert admin]

A very elegant and useful application

I have been using Youmehub for about three months now and I am very pleased. As a designer I am attracted to the beautiful layout and attention to detail. Each module has a subtlety different color to it so you can quickly understand where you are. I originally bought the single user version. I really liked it but wanted to customize it to fit my needs exactly. The developer's version is pricey, but they were willing to deduct the amount I had paid for the single user version. Although I know almost nothing about Filemaker, I have been able to get in and tweak the interface to fulfill all of my needs. Please note that the developer of youmehub makes it very clear on their web site that they do now support the software. I usually avoid dealing with a company with that policy, but I like the software so much I decided to brave it. They have been willing to answer some simple questions. [alert admin]

Missing Sync for Palm OS 5.1 (Mac OS X)

WARNING - THIS SOFTARE IS DANGEROUS!

I recently saw postings about the Missing Sync. It allows one to have more options when syncing to a palm device – in my case a Treo 700p. All of the features looked great: the ability to sync playlists in iTunes and iPhoto, the ability to sync all fields from the address book and a variety of backup options including backing up SD cards. After installing the software I was impressed with how easy it was to set up these services. Then I started noticing the problems. All of my alarms were changed. Any item that had a reminder set for zero minutes before the event was changed to 15 minutes. If that wasn’t bad enough the alarms became sporadic – going off at times that had no relationship with the event. I then discovered I could not snooze an alarm. If I pushed the snooze button I never heard from the alarm again. Although Mark/Space’s website (the company that makes the program) stated it worked with Documents To Go, I could never get this to work. During each sync it would reinstall the program files, but never install my documents. After trying to fix these and about a dozen other problems (including not being able to send email), my Treo crashed – big time. I had to do a hard reset, which meant losing all of my data. I decided to uninstall the missing sync (it came with an uninstall application). To my surprise, after it uninstalled all of its files, it took my backup and install conduits with it! I located these files from a backup copy and replaced the palm hotsync folder. I now had all of my conduits and was ready to sync but after pushing the sync button I immediately got a hotsync error message. To make an already long story short, I had to reinstall all of the original software that came with my Treo. I thought my nightmare was over – I was wrong. The Missing Sync had changed all of my meetings and events in iCal. Besides changing all of the alarm times (and adding additional alarms), it changed my birthdays of friends and family to end on dates this year instead of “never” which they were previously set for. I am writing this to warn this to others: this software not only doesn’t work as advertised – it is dangerous! Unless you have six to eight hours of time you want to kill, stay away from the Missing Sync! BTW I have been using Macs since 1986. [alert admin]

This doesnot' work

You probably have already been told this, but you should try the "restore button" in iTunes. You should not lose much information. iTunes backs up most of your information including notes, alarms, etc. I wish you good luck.
