SteerMouse 3.7 (Mac OS X)
Much Better than Logitech's Own Driver ![]()

Steermouse makes mice far more customizable and reliable than current crop of Logitech drivers. I wouldn't trust the reviews of people who have been using Steermouse only as a short trial and voice their opinions. You *can* set up a one-click spotlight (Steermouse will let you assign key sequences to buttons). It's true you cannot have two mouse drivers for the same mouse--it's surprising to see people remark "I have to uninstall LCC to use Stermouse". It's not logical to expect two drivers to duke it out for the same device. Other reviews complain of the expense. I've been using Steermouse in production for more than a year. At $20, it has made high-end mice like the Logitech MX Revolution far more usable on a Mac. It's well worth the small cost given the weakness in Microsoft's and Logitech's drivers. [alert admin]

Snapz Pro X 2.1.0 (Mac OS X)
It's good to see Ambrosia back on track with a UB version of Snapz Pro. The new version seems more stable and responsive on Intel systems than the previous one. [alert admin]

A very useful tool for removing backgrounds cleanly and without halos on a color basis (versus a pure edge removal which tends to leave pixel halos.) The new tutorials look like they'll help beginners to color-based masking get started with less difficulty. [alert admin]

I love this thing! And the ability to send analysis streams wirelessly to my notebook has been a real time saver! So far its been an excellent part of my tookit. [alert admin]

Snapz Pro X 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)
Didn't want to give Snapz Pro a negative review, but its performance is lagging on my Intel machines because it's still running in Rosetta. Yes, they made it a little more compatible last August, but it's in desperate need of some love from its creators. It's sad that iShowU is actually proving more suitable on the Intels with SnapZ slowly getting older and greyer. Maybe they no longer feel any pressure to compete for the business, but hopefully a new crop of developers will show them the way. [alert admin]

Until recently, I did not feel compelled to review. I've replied to one review (scroll down) if you want to see my comments more in full, but I'll summarize: It's a mac-port of a PC Program. Stability, support, reliability all lacking on a Mac. Company attitude: "Get a PC." User group attitude: "Get a PC." It uses non-standard patch-based modelling rather than the more universally accepted Sub-Division Surface technique. Since most renderers now support dynamic SDS, their is almost no advantage to patch-based modelling for charcacter animaiton. It claims many advanced features that are so poorly implemented to be almost unusable. It is so unstable that it is an exercise in frustration to actually learn the program and even old hands trip over existing bugs. Company attitude is" "We're a small company, so you can't expect a quality product." If you don't mind that, then I guess A:M is OK. If you have to make a living, it's completely unacceptable. Tiger version more than a year late. Their response? Blame Apple. They proudly point out the three or four alumni who have gotten "industry Jos" while ignoring the *thousands* (maybe tens of thousands at this point) who will have nothing to do with A:M and Hash. Caveate Emptor! Steer clear if you value your time and money. -Kerwin Rabbitroo [alert admin]

Suitcase Fusion 12.0 (Mac OS X)
Keep a backup of your font library!! ![]()

I tried it on my entire collection of fonts (already scrubbed by FontDoctor and some other utilities to ensure they're clean). Crashed multiple time on importing which was very slow. Moves fonts to it's own database, "The Vault" but for some reason it's not always sure whether the font is there or not. (Sometimes it tells me a font is not available--restarting Suitcase Fusion seems to suddenly make the font "available.") My Font DB is about 10,000 fonts and about 1GB. Searching is problamatic for fonts, even modern OpenType fonts. Search features don't seem to look at all the meta data such as copyright notice in the font. Take a look at free solutions such as FontExplorer from Linotype before wasting your time on this product. [alert admin]

NewTek LightWave 3D X 8.5 (Mac OS X)
Description is misleading: OGL 2.0 support is only for limited number of cards on PCs, not Macs. 64-bit support is only for Win XP Pro64, not macs. Product is not very stable with large models and OGL implementation is extremely slow. Do yourself a favor, try C4D or Modo, before shelling out for this product (which does not have a free demo and depends on HW dongles for protection.) [alert admin]

Worked fine for me, but you have to reboot after installing. At least that was my experience on a MacPro 4 x3.0Ghz. -K

Pretty Logical to gripe to Logitech which combines the drivers and doesn't let you install only on. Steermouse doesn't claim to be a keyboard driver and can't do anything if Logitech "steals" the mouse from it. FWIW: Steermouse can cohabitate with LCC and support other mice. Giving Steermouse a bad review because it can't undo Logitech's driver is not "logical." :)

And now for the counterpoint. I made a serious attempt to use AM for over 6 years on a Mac. It is a PC program that has been *ported* to the Mac, not designed for it. It heavily relied on libraries from Microsoft that even Microsoft abandoned. When it became totally unstable, all Hash could see was "get a PC." Is that support from your vendor…
