Prosoft DataBackup 3.1 (Mac OS X)

Does not work at all under Snow Leopard

I've used Data Backup without trouble for at least two years without incident until Snow Leopard came out. The introduced 3.1 for Snow Leopard compatibility. It still isn't compatible. In fact, I finally realized the backups were doing strange things like running at odd times, more than it should on the schedule and thus I had no confidence in the backups it was creating. Support has been responsive but they have been telling me this is going to be fixed soon and Snow Leopard came out 3 months ago. The 3.1 still has not been updated with a fix. The last I heard from support is that its going to be fixed soon but I had this odd feeling the developer has gone a missing. This is not cheap software. I decided to get Get Backup 2 which complements Time Machine nicely and works fine with Time Machine. In fact, everything I have worked with Time Machine shortly after it came out. SuperDuper, another excellent backup and cloning software was Snow Leopard compatible almost from the get go. I used to be a Retrospect user before Data Backup and switched to Data Backup as I liked its rotational capability. I tried Retrospect v8 which is Snow Leopard compatible but it really is overkill for my needs. If Data Backup worked like it used to, it would be great. However, it doesn't and I am left with little confidence in their ability to deal with this issue of making their software SL compatible. This is backup software and its used for safety. This is appalling that this program is being marketed on here as Snow Leopard compatible. If you buy it, check your logs if you have it doing scheduled backups or even just manually backup. You'll find the time stamps in he logs make no sense. So how can you trust anything that is backed up if it has to be restored. I'd stay away from this program even if they paid you to take it let alone you paying them. [alert admin]

Contactizer Pro 3.8.3 (Mac OS X)

So so and pricey

I got Contactizer Pro as Entourage has a real problem with reliable syncs (this is a problem for all third party developers due to Apple's sync services). When I got CP I eventually ran into sync problems with it. This app, though nice in terms of its interface and fast is no Entourage. It doesn't have anywhere near the power of Entourage. There are things in the workflow that are not logical, icons aren't there to indicate items have links and its a bit rough around the edges. I've found if it fails due to sync you have to uninstall the app in its entirety and re-install the app so that it will sync again but you then loose all your links and multiple categories and anything else you setup in the program that is feature rich to it. Granted, Objective-Decisions says they are moving to a whole new sync architecture but I've seen nothing yet on this other than the statement and until they do you could end up with a very pricey iCal. So around price, this is a pricey product when you consider you can get Microsoft's Office Home and Student edition for just a few dollars more. That includes Entourage and in my view although CP has a better interface and is snappier, from a functionality perspective it doesn't hold a candle on Entourage. Entourage has the best e-mail client for the Mac, a Notes module a much much more. I'd love some competition to Entourage and I really thought CP would be it. But it needs integration also in terms of the overall product. Search of all modules (no Notes module yet) requires spotlight and although spotlight is fast, its also very limited and can return way too many results. the product needs a search function built into it that has SQL like capability that can search across modules. If you can get this on a half price deal at MacZot it might be worth it to you for its additional power. It is definitely much more powerful than iCal and Addressbook. However, at the full price it is very expensive and in my case its turned into a huge disappointment. [alert admin]

QuicKeys 4.0.5 (Mac OS X)

The best utility/upgrade ever!

I'm a long term user of Quickeys and have tons of shortcuts defined many of which I am constantly using. The v4 release of Quickeys bar none is exceptional. Its made an already powerful product incredible. This is one app I could not do without. It can pretty well do anything within itself but it even allows you to run Automator apps and Applescript programs should you need to on a Quickey, timed event whatever. I can't say enough good about this product. Its a real time-saver and makes using the Mac easier than ever and reducing errors that one makes when doing repetitive things like logging into web sites, entering text etc etc. This product will not disappoint and it is so worth the price. Like me, I'm sure you'll end up using it for years. [alert admin]

Get Backup 2.2.5 (Mac OS X)

Excellent and Easy to Use

I have used numerous backup packages and this is one of the easiest that I have ever used. It is very intuitive and straightforward. Its an nice addition to Time Machine in that I run it overnight when all applications are shut down so that I know that the backups are reliable. Restores are rock solid. I have used products such as Retrospect and although it is absolutely excellent it is overkill in many ways plus its complicated. This is not. I also have Data Backup which I really like but it is not working at all reliably under Snow Leopard. It is a straightforward app also and not the overkill of Retrospect but it is not as easy to use as Get Backup. I'd highly recommend it. [alert admin]

SOHO Notes 7.0.6 (Mac OS X)

Superb Product, Very Powerful

SOHO Notes is an absolutely superb and extremely powerful product. I have ordered the V8 upgrade which sounds excellent. I use this product all the time to store anything and almost everything. I couldn't live without it. I looked at Yojimbo notes and although nice it doesn't have anywhere near the functionality and power of SOHO Notes. I've used the product since its StickyBrains days so that's a long time. [alert admin]

QuicKeys 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Best upgrade so far!!!!!!!

This upgrade is the best upgrade of Quickeys I've seen. I've used Quickeys for years and couldn't live without it. Just two added features makes this upgrade so totally worthwhiled to me. One, the ability to search for a created Quickey is so handy as I have so many and now it is easy for me to look it up. Secondly, to be able to invoke a Quickey through an abbreviation is great as it is easier to remember an abbreviation in many cases than a Quickey especially when you don't invoke the Quickey often. Yet, there is just so much more like if-then-else and text expansion from an abbreviation. [alert admin]
