Flip4Mac WMV 2.3.0.14 (Mac OS X)

WARNING

this new version installs Silverlight by default. You can do a custom install to prevent Silverlight from being installed. Silverlight is evil, because MS has not and most likely will not release authoring tools for Macintosh. Meaning that while you can play the stuff on your Mac, there is no way to create content for it, you'd need to get Windows to do that. [alert admin]

VectorWorks 2008sp3 (Mac OS X)

what's new?

I'd like to know what's new/changed before I update such a mission critical app. Except for a download link in support, there's not even a mention of this update on their site, let alone a change log. Sloppy. [alert admin]

GrowlCamino 1.6 (Mac OS X)

very nice

A great addition to Camino and a definite improvement over the standard behavior. The simplicity does result in less flexible control mechanism for popups (as it hides hose allow once-never-always buttons). It would be nice if clicking the popup blocked message, could at least show me the popup, much like clicking the download finished message opens the downloaded file. [alert admin]

PA - THE - TIC

I've been willing to give the Mac BU the benefit of the doubt, and Office 2004, while far from great, is an Ok product, but this new 2008 version is a crying shame. How an intel native product manages to be noticeably slower than the previous version running in Rosetta emulation is beyond me. And don't tell it's my machine, because I have seen this slowness on several different machines. PPC machines crawl as well. And I'm not alone, it's all over the web. It's not just the startup times either, calculations in excel, even the simplest of charts take much longer to create. So save your money people. Unless all you do is look at an office product, this new version has little benefit and will actually slow you down. [alert admin]

iScroll2 0.30 (Mac OS X)

yeah!

no more manually enabling iScroll after a restart. Seems to be working fine again on a PowerBook 12" 1.33. Thank you! [alert admin]

Apple Login & Keychain Update 1.0 (Mac OS X)

just restart already!

Apple's new update scheme is annoying. It installs as normal through software update. I was reading up on some stuff online, so I selected 'restart: not now' Sometime later I restart, screen goes blue and all of a sudden my Mac tells me there is new software for me to install, and do I want to do this now or just restart. wtf? I already told if to install, why is it bothering me with this again? I click install, it does its thing and it pops up another message, telling me it will be updating boot caches now. wtf, would you just restart already, what is this, Windows? Leopard is nice so far, esthetic issues aside, but this did not impress me. [alert admin]

Adobe InDesign CS3 5.0.1 (Mac OS X)

save as earlier versions?

Is there a save as CS2 option yet? If not, upgrading to CS3 continues to be a real problem. I don't know about Adobe, but I live in a world where I work together with other people/businesses. There's no way I can expect all of them to always have the latest version. [alert admin]

Netscape X 9.0rc1 (Mac OS X)

threading

It's pretty fast, it looks pretty good and has a few of unique features. Unfortunately, it stops doing anything when I pop up a menu. Pages stop loading, animated images stop plating etc. Reminds one of OS 9. It's either a bug or pretty sloppy programming on Netscape's part. [alert admin]

Opera 9.22 (Mac OS X)

obtrusive

this damn browser keeps taking over my "open url in [default browser]" service. No matter what my default browser, as soon as I install this, any highlighted link will open in Opera when I press apple-shift-u. Very annoying, because this browser really isn't very good at at all, and even worse to look at. Now there's two instances of this thing in the new CS3 suite, I had to go into the Bridge and Device Central apps in CS3 to remove the darn things and get my workflow back. [alert admin]

A home run

lmao. Recompiled and fully optimized for Leopard, so now you hear even less sound than before, AND you hear absolutely nothing much faster too!!

I guess the lack of DivX explained.

If you are encoding video on a PPC, you're doing something wrong. The Intel chips run circles around the old G5, especially in video encoding. It's ages ago that Apple last released a PPC Mac, their own OS doesn't even run on PPC chips anymore, yet you think it is reasonable that a company cripples a product because of a bunchof PPC holdouts. If it wasn't for legacy players with DivX support, we'd all be using h264…

.gif images STILL freeze/lock up Safari..

Same here, smooth in Camino (my default browser too), dogslow in Safari. Problem is worse on older hardware, but very evident on both my 12" PowerBook and intel iMac. (http://caminobrowser.org/)

itunes compatibility with os x 10.4.2?

from the Apple menu (top left) on your Macintosh computer, choose Software Update... and install all the updates available. Restart when it asks you too and then run software update again. iTunes 8.1.1 will now show up.

Re: Total garbage

if you don't like Azureus/Vuze, you don't know what you're doing. Simple as that. When correctly configured/optimized for your specific internet connection, there's nothing that can match it for number of peers and download speed.

WOW, a dramatic improvement!

Azureus, when set up correctly, has always been able to download much faster than Transmission, especially for torrents with few peers. Transmission is certainly getting better though.

Adobe vs Final Cut

5 more years of PPC support? You have to be joking. OS X Snow Leopard is coming out in early 2009 and that doesn't even support PPC anymore, I doubt the next version of FCP, cpu hungry as it is, is going to be any different.

Upgrade stops me using Vista

well Microsoft, through the wonderful advent of software authentication, allows one copy of Vista to be installed on only one machine at the time. So even if you weren't lying about running Parallels (or VW Fusion) on your G5, it's still not something your one license of Vista allows. Has nothing to do with Parallels.
