OpenGL Extensions Viewer 2.32 (Mac OS X)
Need to confirm a hardware problem - iMac G5 1.8mhz
Not really related to this product directly, although it appears to be confirming a suspicion I've had a for a few years. I have two iMacs. One is the newer iSight version, the other is an older one. It has the GeForce FX 5200 (NVIDIA NV34MAP OpenGL Engine). In Second Life this one often gets into texture problems, with textures screwed up, or in the wrong place. It's been that way since day one, and I've suspected a hardware problem, but I can't really march into the Apple Store and say "Second Life" doesn't work. Currently running 10.4.10, but about to upgrade to 10.5 (but a bit nervous, because of the heavier OpenGL usage). So I finally got around to running OpenGL Extensions Viewer. I ran it through the tests, and everything was going swimmingly until... Test 1.1 (texturing) with the Framebuffer set to "Framebuffer object (float)". That test, and that test combination alone, crashes the program. Now I assume that OpenGL Extensions Viewer shouldn't be crashing, or asking the graphics board to do something it shouldn't, but I'd like to confirm that. Can anyone provide me with either of the following two things? 1. An Apple Test that I can give to the Apple Store to prove there's a problem or 2. Run this test an an identical piece of hardware and confirm that it works. Many thanks! (Of course, alternatively, a fix to the underlying problem would be just fine too.) [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5 (Mac OS X)
In previous versions, muiltiple simulaneous downloads regularly crashed. In 4.5 I didn't even get that far. It crashed after installing (I think) the first item I requested. The good news is it worked the second time. I still believe there are two major UI flaws with the program. 1. If I tell it to update 30 programs, it shouldn't try and download them all at once. 2. Show me a log of what's been installed, don't make me sit around punching Okay after each one. [alert admin]

SizzlingKeys 3.0.8 (Mac OS X)
The Best iTunes Control Available ![]()

I tried literally dozens of iTunes controllers. None of them gave me quite what I wanted. Some took up too much menubar space, some took up too much screen realestate, some took up too much CPU. Some didn't provide enough controls. SizzlingKeys hit the right balance, and in fact had features I didn't even know I wanted (like search and playlist selection). My only complaint is that he should have saved some of those features for the Pro version--it's too easy to just get the free version and never upgrade! [alert admin]

Intuit QuickBooks Pro 2007 R2 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Please don't ship with debugging output running?
Come on guys. I know you aren't the only developers who do this (I love it when Mail.app reports a duplicate free every time I edit the rules), but some things are more egregious than others. I really don't need to see this sort of thing rolling buy in the console all the time. Worse, since it's not dumping through syslog, I can't even easily filter it out.

Thanks for creating it, and better yet, for releasing it. Perfect for getting warm fuzzies every time you look at the Dock. [alert admin]

Adobe DNG Converter & Camera Raw 3.4 (Mac OS X)
Not compatible with Photoshop 7.01
The description says "Available as a software add-on that works with Photoshop 7.0.1 software", but the requirements below say Photoshop CS and in fact it does not work with my version of 7.01. [alert admin]

Service Scrubber 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. ![]()

I finally can actually *use* my Services menu! Not to mention that it doesn't keep intercepting keystrokes for the current application. Two suggestions: 1. If I remove an application while using the program (e.g. I see a service and say, "hey, I don't need that app", and follow the handy link at the bottom and delete it), Service Scrubber just beeps when I try to save, and fails to save anything. Presumably it got an error because the app wasn't there anymore. If you could ignore those errors (or give a warning) that would be nice. Otherwise I have to reload and change the settings all over again. 2. A way of removing the keyboard shortcuts from an item with a single click (rather than click info, delete, return) would be nice. 3. When looking at the Services Menu view, a column indicating the provider for each item would be nice. But don't let that stop anyone from getting this app. This definitely should be builtin functionality. And developers should *not* run around adding key strokes to their services without user preferences for changing them! [alert admin]

Intuit QuickBooks Pro 2005 7.0f28 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
Apple recently updated the sqllite library. If you are seeing the following from QuickBooks 2006: On converting old ones, nothing. Just did nothing at all. Message in system console said "User canceled". Opening the sample files, Error 21. And it left a lock file behind. Here is the problem. Quickbooks 2006 is not compatible with Apple's most recent (dated Dec 4 on my machine) update to the SQLite library. Replacing /usr/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib with the old version is a temporary work around. I've reported it online. Putting in a phone call in a minute. [alert admin]

Epson TWAIN & Scan Utility 2.34A (Mac OS X)
Getting the driver to work in a hub
I have a "3" port Firewire 800 hub (I don't call it "3" when one of them is to the computer). Image Capture and Epson Scan didn't see the scanner when I plugged my 4870 into it. However they *do* see it when I plugged the hub into a power outlet. So if you are having hub problems, trying powering the hub. Why an powered device like a scanner should care, I don't know, but... MP3 Sushi 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Good, but the underlying tools need help
As a package it works well. The problems tend to be with the underlying technology. The underlying jukebox software does not scale well. I have around 12,000 tracks, and wants to display them all on one page. One note. I had no problem with this running in the background on my dual 1Gz G4 until the kids got a new version of The Sims. Then they'd have problems with the characters suddenly walking around in (very) slow motion. After some playing I finally found that a nice level of "10" fixed that. (To translate, dig down into the MP3 Sushi package to the "tools" directory, edit start-radio.sh and add "nice -n 10 " in front of "./ices". That will tell the system not to give ices quite so much CPU. Didn't seem to impact playing music at all. [alert admin]

Because this solution doesn't require that you have a running version of HyperCard.

It may be that some laptops can't have their batteries switched during sleep, but it's not the case with my PB 17". It can't hang on forever, but you have at least a minute to do the battery switch while it's sleeping. (Which is not to put down the value of hibernation--just a side note.)

I can't figure out when /usr/lib/libsqlite got updated now, whether it was a system update or something else. I know that it's versino 3.1.3, and that replacing it with 3.0.8 (which I have in /usr/local/lib) makes QuickBooks work. However the version that QuickBooks ships with for Panther use is also 3.1.3, which is odd. Furthermore, if I put that copy in /usr/lib, it doesn't work. Which implies that there is some…

Well, the nice value may need some tweaking. I seem to be timing out at the end of songs. Maybe the kids could just stop playing Sims? (Hah.)
