ecto 0.1.7 (Mac OS X)

Yes, it's going to be shareware

Read the description: "ecto is currently in beta phase and it will expire end of January, 2004. After that it will become pay-ware, solely because it is part of my job now. People who previously donated will receive substantial discounts or a free upgrade, depending on their donated sum." I think that's rather clear, and it's worth it. [alert admin]

Apple iLife '04 (Mac OS X)

iPhoto *not* downloadable

rspress, I don't know where you get the idea that iPhoto and iMovie will be downloadable on January 16th. Yes, it will be included with new Macs. But Apple has made no promises that it will be available with the next operating system, and all indicators seems to be that the applications (iPhoto and iMovie) will only be available as part of the $49 retail package ($79 Family Pack) unless you buy a new Mac. With the exception of iTunes, iLife is entirely commercial software now. It just happens to be bundled on the computer like Quicken and Art Director's Toolkit are. [alert admin]

VersionTracker 6.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Looks horrible!

What did you do?!? It looks terrible in Camino. All the listings are scrunched together and the listings from today (Tuesday) do not line up on the right with the listings from yesterday. The tabs at the top are text, running into each other. It looked better in the beta so I think something happened when you switched from development to production. When I go to the individual software entries, I always have to expand my browser window to get it to fit. Back to the drawing board, guys. This isn't what I paid for (I'm a pro user) [alert admin]

Knowbody Smart Paste 1.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Thank you, gnunnery

Thanks for the pointer to the free alternative. It works perfectly and I've been looking for something like this. To the developer of Smart Paste - yes, it doesn't do bold/italic. But $40ish per year?!? What happens if you fall off the face of the earth in 6 months? I have nothing against a renewable license, but you have to give somewhere. You don't charge the equivalent of the full price every year. You charge something like $20 for the first year, $10 a year after that or something along those lines. I wish you well, but your pricing for a one-trick pony (sorry, two-trick since it picks up bold/italic) is way out of line. [alert admin]

i4Colour 1.0 (Mac OS X)

no website comes close

You could list 20 different free color scheming websites, and none come close to what i4Colour does. Does the website have drag & drop to your html editing application? No. Does the website allow you to preview what the color will look like on your text and backgrounds? No. It's one thing to get a mess of colors on a page, it's another to see how the letterforms look in color and against a color background (even using your own template). Do the free websites allow you to create blends? Sample colors from any color on your computer? Copy out the CSS? Save your colors for later reference? lock colors? Fine tune the brightness/saturation with visual feedback? All this can be done with i4Colour, which is by far the best color scheme tool available for OS X now...standalone or online. If you design websites for a living, or even as a hobby, i4Colour takes the chore and trial and error out of color section. [alert admin]

iView MediaPro 2.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

too expensive

It's great software. I've been using it since it was the shareware iView Multimedia. However, a $72 upgrade fee is just too much. The regular price is now $160. Yes, it's better than the previous version. Yes, it's tons better than iPhoto. But is it worth nearly $80 for an upgrade?!? The jury is still out. I'm waiting to see if I do anything in the demo of 2.0 that I can't do with 1.5, and I can't live without. [alert admin]

Studiometry 1.0b9 (Mac OS X)

more praise for the pile

Over the past 7 years, I've tried every time management/billing app out there for freelancers. They all had some good features and some drawbacks. Studiometry is all good, and as close to "perfect" as you can get for under $50. Everything else is in the trash, this is the app I'm using for now on. Congratulations, Tom. I started using this with the first beta and you were so incredibly responsive to everyone's suggestions and kept making the application better and better. Thanks! [alert admin]

It has been…

pulled. This was posted to the InDesign mailing list earlier: The Adobe InDesign 2.0.2 Update download pages went live on Wednesday, December 4. Due to reports of installation issues the updates were pulled on Thursday, December 5. We are currently working to resolve these problems. Corrected updates will be uploaded to Adobe.com as soon as possible. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you for your patience. - Adobe InDesign Team [alert admin]

VueScan 7.5.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Since I don't…

use my scanner every day, I just hold off and download the latest version before I am ready to scan. Even if Epson eventually creates a driver for my Perfection 636U scanner (which I don't expect will happen) I'll probably stick with VueScan. I'm getting the best scans out of it. [alert admin]
