Sdef Editor 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)
Read this important tip if your app runs in Tiger or Panther!!
The latest version of Sdef Editor has a popup in the top-right corner of the document window labelled "Target version:". It is set to Mac OS X.5 ("Mac OS X 10.5") by default, even when opening an old sdef. If this sdef is for an app which runs on earlier systems, make sure you set it to Mac OS X.4 or else the sdef will fail to read for your Tiger-or-earlier users. [alert admin]

Baseline 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I never would have known without Baseline! ![]()

I ran it for the first time about a month ago, getting my baseline. I had several GB of free space. This morning, my "Startup Disk was almost full", so I put Baseline to the test. After 10 minutes, it showed me the answer: Installation of GarageBand, iDVD and iMove had added over 6 GB of audio and video loops to /Library/Application Support, and in /private/var/vm, another 6 GB was being eaten by 12 swapfiles of 512 MB each. (I thought that swapfiles were only supposed to be 80 MB each?) Anyhow, I never would have suspected either of these hogs without BaseLine. It's easy to use, easy to understand, fast, and requires no configuration or setup. It just works. This app is great. I give 5 stars across the board. (Even though I didn't need it, I looked at the documentation just and it looks great too.) [alert admin]

Bookdog 4.2.9 (Mac OS X)
Please update if you have 4.2.9 or .10
Sorry, folks. There were some things missing in 4.2.9 and 4.2.10. Fortunately, one of the things that worked seems to have been then new "Check for Updates" feature. If you got Bookdog 4.2.9 or 4.2.10 yesterday or earlier today, or if you tried "Check for Updates" earlier today and got "Error extracting archive", please use menu Check for Updates to get the latest version. (It's either in the Help menu or Bookdog menu) Thank you! Jerry Krinock, developer P.S. and thanks to Andy Matuschak for the "Check for Updates" framework [alert admin]

Sandvox 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)
A good choice to make your own "pro" site quickly ![]()

Yes, it does crash alot, but since it's got continuous autosave, I never lost any work. You just re-launch, send the report, and pick up where you left off. There is a semi-private beta available (verion 1.1) which, according to the developers, addresses the crashing issue, but I was able to get my site going using 1.0.4, I believe I made a good choice with Sandvox; I was able to convert my old hand-coded website into a modern professional-looking site by myself, in days instead of weeks. I looked at RapidWeaver and Freeway, but both of them seemed like they were going to take me longer to get a professional-looking site. iWeb would be good for high-school kids, personal family photograph albums and blogs, but that's about it. Sandvox can actually be used for a serious business, but this is pushing the envelope, so you'll need the "pro" ($79) version. Like RapidWeaver and iWeb, your Sandvox site is based on a pre-made "design". There are about 25 to choose from, and with a little hacking I was able to modify the color of one of them. Because it is based on pre-made designs, you are not free to put anything where you want it. But, in exchange for this limitation, you get some really nice artwork. If, like me, you're not a graphic designer, look at the designs in Sandvox. The constraints may actually have been beneficial, because it kept my wild imagination under control. My old hand-coded site was kind of wild and wooly. But Sandvox forced me to keep things elegant and coherent. I gave Support / Documentation an "excellent" rating because of the support. Documentation is on a wiki, not too well-organized. I decided to not rate Quality / Stability, since the crashes are not an issue for me, and maybe the beta will fix the crashing. finally, and this is important: It's a modern Cocoa app with a fairly intuitive interface, so it has potential to get alot better. There are many features which could be added, and I expect will be. The developers seem to be actively and enthusiasitcally working on it. [alert admin]

Path Finder 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Upgrading to Path Finder 4 has made me happier than any improvement I've made to my Mac since I upgraded from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X version 10.2. (But it only took me two hours to realize this, instead of 2 months.) Most importantly, the several bugs which I reported over the last 18 months on Path Finder 3 were apparently logged and the ones that I can remember reporting HAVE BEEN FIXED. Cocoatech is RESPONSIBLE. Performance problems that arose with Tiger are fixed. The Path-Finder-private "shelf" is gone and now it's all synchronized with Finder's Favorites. Wonderful. The new features, which I had not even though of, in particular the customizable drawers, are fabulous. I've got Favorites, Volumes, Folder History, Info and Preview all showing. In my list view I see Name, Date Modified, Size, Owner, Group and Permissions. And of course, that wonderful old PATH bar, with a new look! If I had to choose between Cocoatech's upgrade from Path Finder 3 to Path Finder 4, and Apple's upgrade from Mac OS X 10.3 to 10.4, I'd take Path Finder 4. Path Finder 4 is better than Tiger. Bookdog 2.3 (Mac OS X)
Developer's Response to macsolu's Bug Report
We take bug reports seriously, and serious bug reports very seriously. We received a message reporting this bug from macsolu on October 29, Saturday afternoon around 2:00 PM and within an hour had replied asking how to trigger the reported behavior. While waiting for a reply, we did additional study of and testing Bookdog but could not find any way that Bookdog might behave as described by macsolu. Before giving up at 12:49 AM Sunday morning, we learned that macsolu was in business as a Macintosh consultant, so we sent macsolu another message offering to hire macsolu to help us fix this. On Thursday November 3 we received a reply from macsolu, saying that macsolu would be travelling and unavailable to provide any assistance for the next several months, but not a single clue regarding macsolu's hardware or how to trigger the problem. Very strange. We hereby offer a $100 U.S. dollar reward to the first user who can tell us how using Bookdog can trigger 30 minutes of thrashing and inability to launch other applications. You may have to work with us some, sending us your bookmarks file, hardware and software description. We have access to all Mac models at Apple's lab in Cupertino. We will pay via Paypal or a paper check, as preferred by the winner. So, download Bookdog and try it. If macsolu is correct, you can win $100. If macsolu's report was a Halloween prank, you'll get a great application for sorting and managing your bookmarks with a three-year warranty. Actually you're going to get a great application in both cases, because if we can reproduce such a bug we're going to fix it. Our Fearless Leader 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Is there any way to slow it down, so that each slide will stay on the screen longer than 7 seconds? I want to give each of our President's quotifications the respectication that he deserves, but many of them need some serious contemplation to fully appreciatize and understandifize. [alert admin]

SafariSorter 2.1 (Mac OS X)
Reply to N Parker: You already CAN search your bookmarks
Dear N, You know, that was going to be my next project, to write a utility, as you suggested, which would search Safari bookmarks. I was thinking of charging you $5 for it, but then, a few weeks ago I discovered that this feature is already built into Safari! It's tricky to find, but here's how it works. Go to menu->Bookmarks->Show All Bookmarks. Then, do Edit->Find. You get the usual "FInd" dialog box, which usually finds text on web pages. But now, since the page in the front window is your bookmarks, it searches your bookmarks for the text. It searches both the names and the urls. You don't even have to open the disclosure triangles - it drills down inside all of the folders. (I remember stupid Internet Explorer would only sort bookmarks of open folders ---arggghhh!!!!). Well, you see Apple isn't so bad after all. So you can keep your $5, or else donate it to a worthy cause, as I suggest in my SafariSorter documentation. :) Jerry Krinock Raisinland [alert admin]

Yes, to make a long story short, Mac OS 10.3.9 users are now frozen at Bookdog 5.1.30.
Those affected can read the longer story and download it.

A question has been raised as to whether or not I wasted my time supporting "The All-New Netscape Navigator" (version 9). I would say that Netscape ^almost^ died, until a few months ago when they released this "all new" version 9. It didn't die. And when it was released, I got a half dozen requests from users to support it. Personally, I'm not very impressed with the "all new" Navigator 9, because it seems to…

Responses and Thanks from Developer
Thanks for taking the time to do such a detailed review. Sorry it slipped under my radar until today. I actually spend most of my time writing code and don't get to VersionTracker as often as I should. Let me respond to your points. "The windows could use a cleanup. There’s too much unnecessary info and controls on them. Data like “Bookdog version 4.2.11” should not be displayed in a bookmarks window. It…

Decent app with some frustrating issues...
Hi, Regarding the Verify, something is wrong if you get requests piling up at 1 per second on a broadband connection, unless it was completely broken temporarily. If you could please contact me I'd like more info; I'd like to run your bookmarks through Verify myself if this is reproducible. Regarding the Look of Bookdog, well, the key to this business is Time Management. There's only so much you can do in one day. Being…

$100 Reward to anyone that can corroborate this
It seems that jimbombom found it easy to arrange bookmarks satisfactorily before "the damn[ed] program kept rearranging them". I opened my Firefox bookmarks in Bookdog, arranged them, took a screenshot, then went to use other applications, when I came back 24 hours later, to my great un-surprise, the bookmarks were all exactly as I had left them. Sheep Systems hereby offers a $100 USD reward to anyone who can tell or show me how…

theBroz just reported to me that after reinstalling Bookdog, he is no longer able to make it crash. He says he is going to try and beat it up, and will report to me if he has any more trouble. So, at this point in time, it looks like the problem was a corrupt download or installation. Jerry Krinock, developer

Please look at the screenshots of the preferences and read SafariSorter's extensive documentation. Most people want it to "just sort", but SafariSorter is quite customizable to satisfy the needs of the professional bookmarks collector. As explained in the documentation, you can easily mark subfolders which you don't want sorted, or keep certain bookmarks up at the top. If after reviewing this documentation you can suggest any easier ways to customize the sorting process, please go…

SafariSorter ships with extensive "Help" documentation, which is also available before installing on the web page, and all the results it produces are entirely expected. Of course, if one operates based on preconceived, unshakeable beliefs and starts pushing buttons before understanding the documentation, a quagmire can result, and yes one can make a bad situation even worse.
