smcFanControl 2.1.2 (Mac OS X)
Works as advertised but I found something better :-) ![]()

I recently replaced my PowerBook G4 with a new (2/2008) MacBook Pro 2.4GHz with the latest "Penryn" processor. My biggest complaint was that in a quiet room the MacBook Pro fans could be easily heard, where my PowerBook was dead quiet. I tried smcFanControl but as other bloggers stated, it doesn't allow one to DECREASE fan speed. Your stuck starting at the Apple Default of 2000 rpm. Well, the Penryn is much cooler than previous processors. I tried a different utility called "Fan Control 1.2" and it allows decreasing the fan speed but also you can decrease the set point for increasing the speed. I'll tell ya, even going down to 1800 rpm made big difference, I'm currently set at 1400 rpm and all you can hear is the hard drive now. When I start "pushing" the processor the fans slowly speed up and try to keep the temp around 50˚C. Haven't gone much above 55˚C or 2500 rpm. Of course, if you choose, Fan Control allows you to do what smcFanControl does ie set the fan rpm higher (up to 3500 rpm). I'm sure with the decreased fan setting we could get slightly better battery life. Now if I can only get the voltage or processor speed to adjust down I can max out battery life. [alert admin]

Fan Control 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Works GREAT with New Penryn MacBook Pro
I just upgraded to a new (2/2008) MacBook Pro with the latest 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo "Penryn" processor. I had a 5 year old PowerBook G4 that was very quiet. I almost never heard the fan. With the new MacBook Pro the fan noise was noticeable although the computer didn't feel that hot. I tried using smcFanControl which worked but ONLY allows you to increase the fan speed, not decrease or adjust the "graph". The Apple default setting is 2000 rpm and that is the lowest limit smcFanControl allows on the MacBook Pro. Fan Control 1.2 allowed me to greatly decrease the background noise and further tweek fan speed settings. Even 1800 rpm was quieter. Now I can get down to 1200 - 1500 rpm and can only hear the hard drive noise! I'm sure this tweek will save on battery use as well. HEY, I know what you are going to say.... But Fan Control allows me to set the "graph" so if the temp starts climbing above 50˚C (I set mine to 48˚C) then the fan speed ever so gradually climbs. Seems very smooth and not noticeable. Heck, if your a serious power user, you can set your fan speed minimum to up to 3500 rpm if you choose. I have only had the computer for a day, but I appreciate having the ability to control the fan speed specific to my use and liking! I also installed it on my older iMac with the Core Duo to quiet it down as well. It runs cool with the fans at 1000 rpm. Now if I could only set the processor speed lower to max out battery life.... iTunes-LAME Encoder 2.0.9.34 (Mac OS X)
I just downloaded and tried version 2.0.9-34 and it works GREAT. I'm running Leopard with the latest iTunes on an Intel iMac. No more missed text when importing into iTunes. It also includes LAME version 3.97 which is the latest stable version. I'm so happy someone took over improving this awesome software. You can't go wrong with using -V2 --vbr-new as the encoding option. Way better than using iTunes MP3 encoding. [alert admin]

xACT 1.12 (Mac OS X)
What a Christmas Present! One utility now does it all. This takes the place of 4 programs and then some. The first and only (I know of) that decodes .ape files on OS X!!! No more needing to load VirtualPC just to decode those files. Now if I could only get it to split Exact Audio Copy full CD .cue files, I'd be in business. Of note, this replaces MacFLAC. Get this NOW. And its free! Now to continue testing. So far so good. [alert admin]

awesome people. I downloaded it with the above link at over 250 kbps/sec (took about a minute).. Too bad they don't actually tell you what fixes and options are included with the update. I'm using OS X 10.2.1 on a new dual 867 MHz with the retail 8500 card. I installed the update without a hitch. I was very suprised to find out that with this update I now have more monitor resolutions to choose from! I use 1280 x 960 and with the older drivers (included with Jaguar) I could only get 75 Hz refresh rate. With this updatecan now use up to 100 Hz!!! It's like I have a new monitor (Ok, not that extreme a deal, but a noticible improvement). Now if I could only figure out why my computer freezes on wake up from sleep... [alert admin]

iTunes-LAME Encoder 1.0 (Mac OS X)
sounding MP3's I've heard. It was a big deal getting installed but is easy once you get it working. FINALLY allows all of the LAME options. I use "--r3mix" and love it. The best thing is that it accurately uses CDDB data that iTunes gets. Even the year of the cd is added. Sorry Audion and N2MP3 Pro, this provides better encoding options and uses the latest LAME. Besides...it's FREE! 4 stars because about 1 in 15 CD's don't encode. You should keep iTunes in the foreground until Apple fixes AppleScript when using this. [alert admin]
