Leopard Cache Cleaner 4.0.7 (Mac OS X)

Frequently uses 100% of my CPU and slows everything else down

I cannot figure out what everyone thinks is so great about LCC 4.0.7. I just tried it for the first time on my 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 20" iMac running OS 10.5.2 with 2 GB of RAM, and I am just about ready to uninstall it. I set it up to use ClamAV, and in the Automatic Operation prefs I have it set to Run Maintenance Scripts, Repair Permissions, Enable Virus Safe Folder, Prioritize Applications and Update Virus Definitions EVERY 30 DAYS. However, it now very frequently (like every 10 minutes or so) cranks my CPUs up to 100% and makes my other apps crawl because the processor is choking on the LCC Engine and/or clamav (which I determined by looking at the Activity Monitor). Even when I uncheck Enable Safe Virus Folders and Prioritize Applications in the Automatic Operations prefs, it still runs my CPU at 100% and slows everything else down. I should say that this is a brand new installation of 10.5.2 that was done using Erase and Install, and there's hardly any other apps installed on this system yet besides Office 2008 (12.0.1). So, there's really no reason the LCC Engine or ClamAV should be working that hard or that frequently. What's going on here? Do I have it setup wrong? Please inform me because I'm about ready to dump this app if it's going to chew up my processor all the time. Then, of course, I will have to be honest in my VersionTracker review of LCC. Apple Time Capsule & AirPort Base Station 7.3.1 (Mac OS X)

AUTO-SLEEP DOESN'T WORK AFTER THIS UPDATE (or possibly Apple Security Update 2008-002)

Using Software Update, I simultaneously applied the Apple Time Capsule & AirPort Base Station update and the Apple Security Update to my 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 20" iMac running 10.5.2 with 2 GB of RAM, and now it won't automatically sleep! I tried futzing with the Sleep settings, but it didn't help. I have it set to put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for 20 minutes, display after 10 minutes, with Wake for Ethernet network administrator access UNCHECKED. One of these updates obviously introduced some process that's interfering with the Automatic Sleep function in OS 10.5. How do I fix this? [alert admin]

Skim 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)

This version is a little buggy under 10.5.2

I LOVE this app. However, I just upgraded my 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 20" iMac to 10.5.2, and now Skim 1.0.3 is a little buggy (it was fine before when I was using OS 10.4.11). For instance, some PDFs open without anything in the main window -- the Table of Contents or thumbnail is there in the left window, but there's nothing in the main window until I click View > Full Screen, and then escape out of full screen view. Only then will the PDF show up in the main window. This only happens with SOME PDFs, and not with others (there's no logic to it). Also, when I right-click on a PDF in the Finder and go to "Open With", for some reason there are two listings for Skim in the Open With contextual menu -- one that is listed as "Skim 1.0.3.app (1.0.3)" and another that is listed as "Skim.app (1.0.3)". There is only one version of Skim on my hard drive, so I cannot figure out why it shows up twice. Another thing is that some of the embedded check-boxes in a PDF form have suddenly disappeared since I upgraded to 10.5. These check-boxes worked fine in Skim when I was using that same fillable PDF form in Skim 1.0.3 under OS 10.4.11, but now they're gone and no amount of mouse-overing will bring them back. Oddly, they're also gone in Preview 4.0, but they show up fine in Acrobat Pro 6.0. Weird, huh? [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Still cannot open Entourage calendar events by clicking them, and other remarks

This update seems to have fixed the Entourage notifications problem, but it did not fix the problem with events -- I still cannot open a calendar event by double-clicking it, as I could in Entourage 11.x (Office 2004). I have to click on the event and then go to File > Open Event to open an existing event in the calendar. That's annoying. And yes, I do know that I can click on the event and Command-O to open it, but that's still not as convenient as double-clicking them. Why would M$ remove a long-existing feature such as this? Or did they just goof up the code (more likely). Otherwise, no problems with this update on my 2.16 GHz Intel iMac running OS 10.5.2. And another thing: I cannot believe that M$ did not give us a way to remove that STUPID Elements Gallery toolbar in Word, Excel and Powerpoint that includes buttons for Document Elements, Quick Tables, Charts, SmartArt Graphics and WordArt. It is a giant waste of screen real estate, and it is probably only useful to around 5% of Office users, so it's very annoying that the other 95% of us do not have a way to remove it. Furthermore, none of the Office 2008 apps are as fast as they should be now that they are Intel-native. Sure, they're faster than they were in Office 2004, but only perhaps 15% faster. Also, the Help in all the Office 2008 apps STINKS. I can't wait for 12.1 (though knowing the MAC Business Unit's skills, 12.1 will probably also stink). Overall, there is really no reason to switch to Office 2008 because it's junk -- the only exception being that you can use it to open the new M$ file formats (the only purpose of which is to generate new revenues). So let's review: Vista = JUNK; Office 2008 = JUNK. Why is this company still relevant? [alert admin]

PTHPasteboard 4.4.0 (Mac OS X)

Menubar click area is too SMALL, otherwise it's great

I love this app and use it daily. However, in this last version, the size of the area in the menubar you must click to activate a pasteboard has shrunk, making it a pain to use. It used to be that I could click anywhere within maybe 1/16th of an inch on either side of the menubar image (in my case, the red scissors) and it would work. But with this new version I must click EXACTLY ON the scissors to get it to respond. This is kind of a pain because the idea of this app is to make it as quick and easy as possible to paste something, but more often than not I miss the scissors by the slightest amount and have to reposition the cursor and click again, which slows me down. I know this seems like a niggling complaint, but it really does slow me down (when compared to earlier versions, which were much more forgiving). I cannot find a preference that allows me to widen the clickable area. Thanks to the developers for making such a great app, and for making a free version! [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Nice backup app, but Synk Standard is much better

I like SuperDuper! and used without incident it for over a year. However, Synk 6.3.2 works better than SuperDuper! in just about every way. Like SuperDuper!, Synk is one of the only backup utilities that will allow you to make fully bootable backups and still preserve file fork info (or whatever info is normally lost during backup using most other backup applications). However, Synk also does synchronizations and archives, and it allows you to exclude selected files from a backup or sync process. I like SuperDuper for its simplicity, but Synk Basic is just as simple to use, and Synk Standard is far superior (and it also allows for rules/exclusions). Synk also can schedule backups and archives. There are three versions of Synk: Synk Basic (which is SUPER SIMPLE TO USE, has a scheduling function, and is very similar to Super Duper which costs $25); Synk Standard ($35), which adds advanced synchronization and more advanced exclusion rules; and Synk Pro (45), which adds N-way synchronization, advanced rule capabilities for arbitrary actions and archiving, more flexible scheduling options, and more. I am not in any way affiliated with Decimus Software (the makers of Synk). I just want people to know that SuperDuper! is not the only option out there for making bootable backups -- AND for SYNCHRONIZATION. Also, Synk offers a totally reasonable tryout period of (I think) 29 days, whereas SuperDuper only lets you backup 100 MB until you pay the $27.95!!!! In my opinion, those are the worst software trial terms I have ever heard. Furthermore, Synk's developer Ben will bend over backwards to help you. Again, I swear that I'm in no way associated with Decimus Software or its employees. I'm writing this glowing review because SuperDuper! seems to have some kind of marketing advantage over Synk -- even though Synk is a superior product. So, I'd like to get the word out about Synk. You can check out the reviews of on VersionTrackerall three versions of Synk at http://www.versiontracker.com/php/qs.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=Synk&srchArea=macosx&submit= Or, you can go directly to the developer's website at http://www.decimus.net/ [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Synk Standard works just a swell as SuperDuper

How come nobody ever seems to mention the truly outstanding backup/synchronization app Synk? Before you buy SuperDuper, I suggest you give Synk a try. It also makes true bootable backups (with no resource fork loss), but does synking as well. I own both SuperDuper and Synk Standard, and I must say that I prefer the speed and explanatory logs of Synk. [alert admin]

OnyX 1.8.4b (Mac OS X)

10.4.11 breaks Onyx's Double Arrows in Scrollbar at Both Ends parameter

Since installing OS 10.4.11, my Onyx parameter to set Double Arrows in Scrollbar at Both Ends does not work. On some apps (like iPhoto) the inside arrows simply do not show up. On other apps (like Entourage) the arrows all show up but the inside arrows do nothing. Oddly, on other apps (like Safari) they work fine. Weird. [alert admin]

Still cannot open Entourage calendar events by clicking them, and other remarks

The problem is that when I create calendar events I usually click the "All-day event" checkbox because when I'm viewing my calendar (which I usually do in Month view) I don't like seeing the time at the beginning of each event. So, there's no time listed at the beginning of most of my events, therefore I have nothing to click on to re-open an event. The weird thing is that I used to…

Menubar click area is too SMALL, otherwise it's great

FOLLOWUP TO MY COMMENT THAT "Menubar click area is too SMALL, otherwise it's great": I just updated to Mac OS 10.5 (and eventually to 10.5.2), and now this problem is SOLVED -- the area of the Pasteboard menubar icon that responds to clicking is back to its normal size, which is quite sufficient and no longer annoyingly restricted/small. This is a GREAT application.

Nice try, "Jay."

My "copy," as you put it, is polished because I am a Ph.D. student at the University of Iowa (coursework complete) and now I teach Geography at California State University at San Bernardino. Oh, and I'm a former Clinton Administration official -- so I write well because it's my job. Seriously, I have nothing to do with the company that makes Synk. In fact, I only have an educational license (since I'm still a…

Thank you

I am not a developer of any sort. In fact, I am a geographer, and normally I wouldn't give a hoot about any of the above back-and-forth regarding software development. However, I do care about giving credit where credit is due. And, I'm a fan of civilized discourse. Accordingly, I give lots of kudos to both the above developers and the person who showed the developers what's what. Kudos to…

My house is at the wrong place

The comment below from inferno2000 about Selective Availability (SA) missed something improtant: Selective Availability was cancelled in 2000, so it no longer applies. This info was in the paragraph just after the one inferno2000 quoted. So, SA is not the reason your house is geopositioned one down from its correct location -- that's the fault of human error.
