TimeMachineEditor 2.5 (Mac OS X)
I don't have any problem with this running a Daemon. But I don't want that showing up in the Dock or when I pressed CMD-Tab to switch apps. In other words, please tell us how to make the Daemon "faceless." There has to be a way. NSUIElement? Please tell us how to do it. [alert admin]

BackupLoupe 1.8.2 (Mac OS X)
I have a March 2009 iMac running 10.6.1. I turned on Time Machine and made a partial backup on my Time Capsule today. I then installed BackupLoupe (latest version) and it says "Could not find any backups." This remains true even though I have the Time Capsule drive mounted! I then went to the prefs in BackupLoupe and specified the direct path to my Time Capsule (where the *.sparsebundle is saved). Even then BackupLoupe cannot find it! I even tried unticking the "Use default TimeMachine locations, but to no avail. What do I do to fix this? [alert admin]

SpamSieve 2.7.7 (Mac OS X)
I've never ever had a problem with this great software. But for whatever reason, upon downloading the 2.7.7 DMG today (10 times, mind you, both automatically and manually), I was unable to Mount the DMG. I get a "no mountable file systems" very time. I have seen this in the past with a couple other DMGs not related to SpamSieve. But I was able to resolve the problem on those simply by using Disk Utility to "Convert" the DMG to a Read/Write or Read Only format. I tried that on this Spam Sieve DMG and it doesn't work. So for now, I am unable to upgrade due to what appears to be a bug in the DMG (Tiger incompatibility?). [alert admin]

Snapz Pro X 2.2 (Mac OS X)
Still needed, and so are audio improvements ![]()

It is unfortunate but true. We still need this. For despite the many improvements in Snow Leopard, Apple foolishly refused to empower us with the means to select a "section" of the screen to take a video of. Who wants an enormous video of the entire screen on 24" iMacs or 30" big screens? The filesize becomes ridiculous (and yes, I am aware of the Animation codec which is very crisp yet compact for videos of the screen). SnapzPro solves this problem very nicely by giving me flexibility on what I can capture on screen. But my gripe is voiceover compression. Why can't Snapz Pro give me the means to compress the microphone audio in a modern format like MP3 or AAC? Instead I have to compress using one of the silly choices SnapzPro gives me, which sounds quite bad and isn't that small in terms of filesize either. It's a major problem which is not being address. Another concern is, why did it take Snow Leopard for this software to be updated? It hadn't been updated in ages and now the developer sighs and says, "Blasted! We have to update it." That's how I, a user, perceive it anyway. Improve your software, for goodness sake, and don't wait for OS updates to do it! [alert admin]

Transmission 1.42 (Mac OS X)
I really like this software but the recent versions have me quite upset. For the life of me I cannot get Transmission to STOP launching every time I restart my computer. This continues to happen even after I open Prefs > Accounts > Login Items and then Click on Transmission and then the "-" button to remove it from the list. It keeps popup back into the list after each restart! I have scanned through the Transmission Prefs 3 times and I cannot see any preference that is doing this. So to me, this is a major bug in Transmission. I'm inclined to delete it off my hard drive because of this. [alert admin]

1Password 2.6.5 (Mac OS X)
Even at version 2.6.5, I cannot log onto Fidelity.com. This is true even if I start off by clicking once in the password field and then type my password by hand. I then would click once in the Customer ID/SSN field and type my ID. Then while the text cursor was still in the Customer ID/SSN field, I would immediately clicked the 1P button in Safari and chose Save Form. I then gave it a name and saved it. I then tried it, but it fails with: "The information you entered is not correct." http://support.agilewebsolutions.com/showthread.php?p=57887#post57887 [alert admin]

I've been a 1Password user since the MacHeist Bundle earlier this year. Great software and superior support. I agree with remarks made here about the quick support and fast fixes. However, there is one exception: Fidelity.com. For whatever reason, 1Password just refuses to log you on to that site. You are forced to do it manually. I have posted about this in the 1Password support forum, along side others. A number of weeks have transpired since that thread was started, and a couple versions have come out since then. But still no Fidelity fix. [alert admin]

Boomerang Data Recovery 1.1.5 (Mac OS X)
First of all, spend time talking in their forums for a couple weeks before buying. Seriously. I know everyone visiting here has either deleted files in OS X by accident (like I did) or experienced a HD crash of some sort. As such you want to recover your files ASAP. And perhaps, like me, you tried other programs like Data Rescue II or FileSalvage first, but they failed to get all your files back which is why you are considering Boomerang. But take my advice -- watch the forums. The so-called "developer" is named "Adam" and is active in his forums. He actively deletes posts and entire threads if they say anything negative about his software. And something "negative" could simply be a report of a crash in Boomerang! Through my shock of watching the way this Adam character conducts himself in the forums, I further investigated the company behind the Boomerang product: * I conducted a whois search on their domain name. This yielded no info as they hide behind a whois filtering company. While that is not necessarily a bad thing, it's not a good sign either -- especially in light of their horrific customer support. * I cannot pull up any public records on "Boomerang Data Recovery" nor could I get anything from some "Company Profile" sites. So I must assume "Boomerang Data Recovery" is a dummy business name? That would also explain why they hide behind a whois filter. * They are not listed with the Santa Barbara BBB. (But I am sure that a threat of a complain with the Better Business Bureau would get Adam on his toes to actually start supporting his Mac customers.) * Click the "resellers" link on this page: http://www.boomdrs.com/aboutus/ The page that appears is quite odd indeed. I would have expected a list of resellers. Hmmm. * They claim to be funded by a venture capital firm named "Webvestments" but Googling for that name doesn't result in much info. And the webvestments.net site appears to be broken. And Googling for "webvestments venture capital" yields only 3 search results, 2 in Chinese and a link back to the boomdrs.com site. * Adam's lack of technical knowledge (and unusual responses) in the forums shows that he is not a programmer of Boomerang. If anything, he appears to be a very smooth talker who knows how to get venture capital money to fund operations like Boomerang. At any rate, I would not consider him "a developer" in the true sense of the term. All rather disconcerting to be sure. Indeed, I've been a Mac user since the 128k came out in 1984, and I've dealt with hundreds of software and hardware vendors for the Mac. But I have never, ever experienced anything as bad as with the people behind Boomerang. But again, you don't have to take my word for it. Participate in the forums. You will soon come to discover what I have. This is a very unscrupulous operation! And it is unfortunate to because we need a better file recovery tool -- one that will allow us to search for custom file types (yes, I tried FileSalvage but it didn't get some custom file types back). Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery 2.1 (Mac OS X)
I've been trying all the major OS X recovery apps lately, in order to recover some files I accidently deleted. I was surprised to see this program unique among all others (Boomerang, VirtualLab, FileSalvage, Data Rescue II, etc.) in that it won't even fully launch until you enable the ROOT user on your Mac! Now that is frightening and makes no sense why it should require that, especially since other data recovery tools for OS X do not. Or is this just a bug? I'm running 10.4.11 on a dual CPU Intel iMac. Microsoft Office 2004 11.3.9 (Mac OS X)
Could not locate correct version to update ![]()

I double-clicked the installer, and it told me to quit my open MS apps. I did and then clicked the Continue button on the Installer dialog. It then asked for my administrator password, which I supplied. I then authenticated itself and then started searching for apps to update. A few seconds later, I receive a dialog that states the following: The installer could not located the correct version of the software required to install this update. See the Read Me file included with this installer to determine if your software meets the requirements for this update. Of course, a quick read of the Read Me shows that I do indeed have the correct software (bought and paid for, mind you) for this update. And yet, this stupid updater cannot find it. To illustrate just HOW stupid this updater is, I quit the updater, launched Word (the app this updater is supposed to update), then launched the Updater again. The updater immediately found that Word was running and told me that I first had to quit it. I did and yet the update gave me that silly "cannot located correct version" dialog again. I have the correct version, so I don't see what else could be wrong here except faulty MS programming. And yes, I've installed all other updates to Office 2004 in the past WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM AT ALL! So this is the first time I've been hit with something like this from MS. The About box in Word says my version is 11.3.5 (070413). [alert admin]

ManikGrafik, you haven't the faintest idea what you are talking about. I made it very clear I was speaking about VIDEO. Your trick only works for stills. Ambrosia, it's been 2.5 months since you posted here about my being impressed in the "near future." Since I define "near future" as "within 3 months," please impress me this month with the ability to choose MP3 or AAC audio when I take screen captures with…

Give me a break. I own a G4 Cube, so I know just how slow Office 2008 is. These apps are much slower to launch than Office 2004, not only on my G4 but the time it takes to launch even on my 3.06GHz iMac is surprising. I don't say this to bash MS. I say this to kick their Mac Design team in the pants so they write decent code.…

I was able to upgrade on my Intel iMac at the office, so it would appear to be a PPC and/or Tiger conflict with DMG mounting. Sadly, I don't know how to fix it.

Yes, but what if you don't normally drink any kind of coffee, alcoholic beverages, smoke or otherwise waste your spare change frivolously on such soft-core drugs? Hence, bad times affect different people in different ways. I have been blessed enough (for the time being anyway) to have been able to afford version 2.x of this software, courtesy of MacHeist. I have found 1Password to be indispensable. Even if you didn't get it via…

It's not just INX that Adobe screwed up. I saved an InDesign file using InDesign CS3 for OS X and gave it to an associate who had InDesign CS3 for Windows. He could not open the file. We tried it again, both using CS2, but that didn't work either. Sometimes I feel that Adobe should be paying US to use and debug their software.

I must say that I am pleasantly surprised, and humbled, that the developer has taken their time to not only examine my comment here on Versiontracker but also to express a public commitment to adding more audio compression settings in a future update! This is rare and truly worthy of praise! Thank you for a great product, and please keep up the great work, Ambrosia!

There is unfortunately no end in sight for the unhelpful comments to my review, which apparently are being made by uneducated people or people who speak English as a second language (and therefore have a difficult time digesting all I have written above). Today, after trying everything in vain to keep Transmission from popup up automatically after every restart, I decided to trash the Transmission app, empty trash, and see what happened. When I restarted,…

My OS, eh? Then why does the same problem occur on a complete different Mac with a completely different install of OS X? I would like to add that it happened to me again just today. All I did was restart, and Transmission auto-launched at boot. I had deleted Transmission from my Account login startup items list prior to rebooting. And again, NOTHING ELSE on my system does this auto-launching at boot time…

I could also say that anyone who willingly names themselves "freakomat" is someone who likely doesn't know what they are talking about. oomu, you are right. And if you read the second paragraph of my review posting, you will see that I tried to find an AutoLogin setting somewhere in Transmission but could not locate it. The rest of you commenting here are still adding nothing to the conversation. You are just saying "I don't…

Sorry fellows, but you guys are not giving me enough evidence to prove it is NOT Transmission. And if you are right, why then does it do the same thing on every Mac I install it on? And before you say you don't have the problem, give thought to the fact that I am using a G4 where you are likely using an Intel Machine. All the Macs I've tried it on…
