HP OfficeJet G series 7.3.1 (Mac OS X)

So far so good. Printing works fine, CPU usage is fine. What is different is that this isn't a simple driver upgrade - is also installs a suite of applications called HP Image Zone. Some are unnecessary as e.g. iPhoto does them and does them better, but the Panorama Stitcher (though basic) does a pretty good job in terms of the end result - better than the Photostitch software you get from Canon with their digital cameras (just nowhere near the same no. of options). I haven't tried scanning properly yet (and rarely use that function anyway), but it seems similar to before... maybe faster. All-in-all, not a bad upgrade as far as I can tell. Still docking one star for how long it took HP to get a reasonable driver out! [alert admin]

I put off adding this review until I had the opportunity to use this version a bit more seriously - I have to say that I like it a lot more than I did OO 2.x and the new pro features are on the whole excellent additions. I haven't had any problems with audio capture, but I haven't really used the feature that much. The interface has improved immensely IMO. 4 out of 5 as it still lacks a little je nais se quoi - mostly I would like even tighter integration with the other Omni apps. [alert admin]

Have HP finally got this working? ![]()

Well, after giving up on ever having a usable G85 in OS X it seems that these drivers aren't at all bad. I recently decided to give the AIO another shot as I needed to use the scanner and I am not seeing the hideous CPU usage when idle that prior releases always gave. Too late for me to forgive the crapness of HP with their prior releases, but I can safely say that this latest and last version is OK. Overall rating is -1 star owing to the length of time it took HP to finally produce something half decent wrt to this printer. [alert admin]

NeoOffice/J 1.1b (Mac OS X)
The aqua menus alone make a big improvement to the feel of this app. Patrick and Ed have done an awesome job on this release. If you are looking for a powerful yet free Office application with excellent MS Office compatibility then this is the app for you. [alert admin]

Delicious Library 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Very nice looking and what it does do, it does very well and is very easy to use. However, there are a few criticisms I have of the app after a brief test run: 1. Localisation is due to come, but it is a shame it isn't here in the 1.0 release. FWIW, while all the arrows point to the US amazon website, when you add a new item, it actually pulls down the UK amazon website info (I am UK based) which is a bonus considering that I don't think it is meant to as of yet. 2. It's a shame that you can't point it at other websites for more pertinent info (e.g. IMDB for the film info and reviews) 3. It's a little sluggish interface wise. 4. I can't find a way to add several items for one "creator" at one go - i.e. if I want to add a number of albums or books from the same artist, I have to do it separately for each album/book as there doesn't seem to be a way of adding many at one go. This will make it a bit of a chore setting up your initial library. Ideally, it should also pull the info from your iTunes library into Delicious Library - something for a future release. 5. You should be able to add some more default collections such as "Comics" etc. and you should be able to group sub-collections under the appropriate top level (e.g. Books should be divisible into Novels, Manuals, TextBooks, Catalogues, etc) 6. It is crying out for a Keyword/"Smart Collection" feature akin to the Smart Albums in iPhoto so that you can have new additions auto-sorted into your pre-defined Smart Collections. 7. The Help section is quite flimsy and online at the Delicious Monster website which isn't particularly good. With that said, it would make a great addition to the bundled apps on new Macs and I suspect future versions will resolve many of these issues. [alert admin]

What I meant to say was - the support for the Office with the Endnote plug-in comes from the developers of Endnote, not MS. It is up to Endnote to support other software, not the other way around.

Wrt to no.2 - this is not anything that either NeoOffice developers or OpenOffice.org developers can do anything about. The manufacturers of Endnote are the people to complain to... if they weren't so blinkered they might actually realise that there is a demand for their software for use with something other than just MS Office.

OmniWeb won't pass the acid test until version 5.5 which is currently in development. With version 5.5, OmniWeb will be using the most current version of WebKit and will therefore display all the same sites the same as Safari. OmniWeb 5.1.3 is still based on the version of WebCore in Safari 1.2.x.

No, OmniWeb doesn't yet use WebKit - it currently uses a modified version of WebCore. OmniWeb 5.5 will be the first version to use WebKit (and this is only possible because Apple open sourced WebKit relatively recently in development terms).

Can you visit: http://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums and post your problem at the Support forum so that we can help track down the problem. Obviously, it shouldn't be happening. FWIW, it isn't just an application for writing - it is an entire office suite - and given that an install of MS Office 2004 is currently taking up over half a GB of space on my hard drive, the download size for NeoOffice/J is not unreasonable.

Sorry for the delay in testing this... and unfortunately, nope - this is not fixed. It still hangs when using a different user to that selected as first login. (Force) Quitting and re-launching the HP Comms process fixes it, so you will still need to run the aio script to be able to use the printer with FUS.

Do you use the Unsanity APE/Haxies at all? If so disable them or add NeoOffice/J to the exclusion list - the APE system is incompatible with Java 1.3.1 which NOJ uses and could be the source of any crashes. Also/Or: Quit NOJ, then temporarily move your ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ-1.1 folder to the desktop, re-open NOJ and try again. This process will reset the app to its default preferences. If the problem stops happening after this, then either a preference…

Yes, the look and feel needs a lot of work and it is something that the volunteers and developers are working on - the primary aim of this release was to get a stable and functional version out the door. Now that has happened, the developers can focus more on refining the look and feel. Be aware, though, that there are only a very few people willing and/or able to do this work and that…

Why do your students need to back up their entire boot volume? What's wrong with simply backing up their home folders and the contents therein (which doesn't need to be done in root)?
