Skype 2.7.0.330 (Mac OS X)

An absolute 'must-have' app.

If this app is giving you any problems, you need to suspect that something else on your Mac is causing a conflict. Installation/configuration was a breeze for me, and it always performs flawlessly. IMHO, Skype has everything that we expect from every Mac application -- an attractive interface that is intuitive and easy to use. Seamlessly accesses and dials all the telephone numbers stored in 'Address Book' -- and if your local telco charges like a wounded bull for international calls (like Australia's Tel$tra), then Skype's prepaid international call rates which are typically around 2.7 cents per minute should be enough to put a smile on anyone's face :-) Definitely on my 'can't-do-without' list. Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5584.0 (Mac OS X)

Update procedures suck!

Why oh why doesn't this developer "take five" from their endless obsession with bringing out a new version every other week and just use the time (a handful of hours max) fixing their site to make upgrading easy, rather than alienate all us paying customers? And according to their advertising claims, if Parallels is the biggest selling Mac application this means MILLIONS of people getting pissed off! After visiting their update page it asks me for the email address I used to register the product -- and when I type that in it says: "email <what I entered> is not found". Just like the last time I tried, as I recall... What's so difficult about just putting the latest updater on their site in plain view and letting customers download the damn thing? From now on, I'll just go pirate my "updates" rather than trying (in vain) to jump through all their f***ing hoops. Believe me, trying to do things the right way with this mob is a textbook example of honesty NOT paying! [alert admin]

Data Rescue II 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Examine your motives for buying!

The fact that I seem to be the lone dissenter here causes me to view most of this glowing feedback about Data Rescue II with deep suspicion... It may indeed be a fine program for recovering a crashed drive, but I can't comment on that aspect because I haven't yet been in the unhappy position to have to test it under emergency conditions. However, some 'independent users' are suggesting here that they (1) accidentally deleted gigs of important files, then (2) bought this app, recovered every last byte of data, and lived happily ever after. TOTAL LIES!! This from Data Rescue's OWN website: <Begin quote> "Can Data Rescue recover a file I just deleted (I'm running Mac OS X)? No, there is no tool on the market that can recover deleted files without being loaded ahead-of-time. OS X (UNIX) writes over your deleted file immediately, impeding recovery (this was different in previous operating systems that were not based on UNIX)... In Classic Mac OS, this is not the case. Frequently, you will be able to recover deleted files as long as the operating system has not reused their directory and catalog information yet ..." <End quote> Most of us might remember being able to successfully recover files that had been deleted several years beforehand, using earlier versions of Norton Utilities under OS9 (no longer recommended since Peter Norton sold out to Symantec, who immediately lost the plot and went on to develop versions that can cause serious damage to current file structures). But under OSX, once it's gone it's gone for good, regardless of what claims are made for any commercial file recovery program nowadays!! So, don't be taken in by some of the BS and marketing hype that you read here. if you're thinking about forking out a fairly hefty $99 in the hope of saving your bacon after the event, you'll end up losing your data AND your money too! The simplest (and cheapest) option? Try to make a habit of the #1 rule of computing, which has been around since day one -- always back up all important data. CD's or DVD's only cost a few cents nowadays and (better still) if you're upgrading to Leopard, use Time Machine. [alert admin]

Direct Connect 1.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Don't waste your time...

Probably one of the worst pieces of crapware ever released for OSX, who's authors are entirely dependent on selling your email address to spammers for a revenue source. About the best filesharing app I've seen so far is LimeWire (guaranteed spyware free!!). [alert admin]

Little Snitch 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

A MUST-HAVE app.

I've been using this little gem for 6 months now and highly recommend it to anyone with an internet connection (which is probably everyone nowadays!). Once it's installed, it's unobtrusive and takes care of business behind the scenes. Also, the after-sales service is superb. I got a reply within an hour, sent another message and got that one back within a few minutes! [alert admin]

Apple Xcode 1.5 (Mac OS X)

C'mon guys...

It's nice to give helpful advice about how best to download such a big file from an (understandingly) busy site, but lay off the *censored*ing already. App won't do this, app won't do that, downloads too slow, Apple should fix this and that etc.. Sure, I had download problems too, but I got there eventually. The point is it's a GOOD app, it's FREE, it produces finished apps FAST, and generally runs rings round the third party apps I was forced to shell out big money for prior to xCode and Interface Builder!! How 'bout a little gratitude to Apple for making this suite available to us in the first place, and channeling your frustrations into building good OSX apps and kicking some Windoze butt. Which leads me to ask when was the last time Bill Gates gave YOU something for FREE? [alert admin]

WireTap 1.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Works fine for me!!

This app has never done anything but work faultlessly for me on my G4 iBook, both under OSX10.3.3 and after installing the 10.3.5 upgrade. If anyone DOES have trouble running it, I can only guess that they need to suspect something else on their own machine rather than this easy to use, must-have (FREE!) little gem... [alert admin]
