Phoenix Slides 1.2.6 (Mac OS X)
Long may PhoenixSlides live!! Hurrah!
Like the elegant comment before, I can't believe how hard it is to find any current photo browsing app that sees subfolders. I had been using PhotoGrid, but it doesn't support RAW (CRW) files, so the search was on. Phoenix Slides does what it says on the box without fuss and bloat and has basically saved the day. My new workflow is DateTree > PhoenixSlides > PSD. And once again iPhoto can kiss my squirrel!! Huge thanks to the developer, well may you prosper! *applauds* [alert admin]

GarageSale Basic 1.1b2 (Mac OS X)
Why is GS Basic Leopard only when GS supports both Leopard and Tiger? Seeya Garage Sale and good luck in the abyss of forgotten software. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.3 (Mac OS X)
I have eventually given up on Leopard 10.5.3 and dropped back to 10.4.11. Dropping back to Tiger immediately restored my happy healthy computer. It seems that amongst the Big Cats of OSX there is now a Dog, and it's name 10.5.3. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.3 (Mac OS X)
Things have gone from mildly annoying to horrendous on my MDD Dual 800 under 10.5.3. - Adeptec USB card not working after sleep. - Built-in Firewire now not working after sleep!! FFS!! - Lost User Login Items - Borked Parental Control settings - Lost Safari passwords - Safari slow slow slow! - Finder slow slow slow! - Constant Parental Control permission errors in Disk Utility. This was a previously happy computer on 10.5.2. And yes, I've done all the normal diagnostic things along the way. I'm heading back to at least 10.5.2. or maybe even Tiger, just to get my USB card back. Worse Update Ever! [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.3 (Mac OS X)
Installed without fuss onto my Dual 800 G4. Nothing has broken, but nothing has been fixed. The Adaptec 4000 USB PCI card still doesn't work properly after sleep. It was fine under Tiger, now broken under Leopard. Apparently it's a power management issue and we 'shouldn't hold our breath' for it to be fixed. Not really good enough, and the reason for a low score. C'mon Apple! [alert admin]

Apple iMovie 7.1 (Mac OS X)
Adding complication does not a fix make! There are now two inefficient ways to trim a clip - Fine Tune and Trim - when all is needed is a simple adjustable handle at each end of a clip, like the OLD VERSION! iMovie is sinking fast! Boo! [alert admin]

After using iMovie 08 (7.01) for a few projects, I have these observations. Fundamentally it's a workable app with a very nice library section. But... But little things don't ring true for a contemporary Apple app. Sloppy and confusing naming protocol - iMovie 08 (7.0) The inconsistent and pessimistic default file name/location protocol... iMovie 06 - My Great Movie/Movies iMovie 08 (7.0) - My First Project/Documents The User Interface is overly complicated. Each of these items should be achievable in 1 action. Clip Trimming - Now takes 3 actions - Drag Selection/Trim/Confirm Clip Addition - Now takes 2 actions - Drag Selection/Add Audio Levels - Now takes 3 actions - Select/Amount/Comfirm Aside from the obvious differences between the new and the old versions, the main downside to iMovie 08 (7.0) is that it's not actually quicker, easier or more intuitive to use, because seemingly simple actions take numerous steps to achieve. My suggestion to Apple would be to.. - Fix the UI in iMovie 08 (7.0) - Blend the two apps with a Basic/Standard/Advanced option. To me, iMovie 08 looks and feels like an outside consultancy job, or a repurposed library management app with basic editing functionality simply stapled on the bottom. Wait for the rebuild. Acquisition 125.3 (Mac OS X)
It's probably me, but I couldn't get a Torrent to start downloading in Acquistion for love nor money. Popped the Torrent into Transmission and away it went. A bit of work needed there, I'd wager. Good otherwise. [alert admin]

MYOB FirstEdge 2.0 (Mac OS X)
To quote Monty Python "Run away! Run away!". MYOB is possibly one of the lousiest pieces of software ever. No features, no support, no bug fixes. After 5 years of struggling with this dud I pulled anchor and jumped ship to MoneyWorks. Brilliant! MoneyWorks is everything FYOB isn't. And no, I don't work for them. Before you even demo FYOB, download and try MoneyWorks. They even send your accountant a free copy of the app. True story. [alert admin]

To stop iPhoto claim-jumping your camera card, launch the Apple application Image Capture and then open the preferences. You can then determine which app (if any) you want to launch when you plug in a camera or a card. I personally use DateTree. Enjoy.
