Yadal 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Yadal is a Great App

Yadal is a very quick and convenient way to open your apps from the dock with a simple right click on the dock icon I have also tried the similar application "Moof," which has an icon in the menu bar rather than in the dock. So if you have extra space in the menu bar and prefer having a launcher there, try the Moof route. As far as launchers go, I also regularly use Namely, which is a key stroke launcher, and both Yadal and Namely are simple and do the trick quickly. One advantage to Yadal over "Namely" is you can put any folder into it, not just applications, so I stuck a Southpark and a TV series "Lost" folder at the top of the applications list, and when I open Yadal from the dock, Southpark and Lost folders appear at the top of the list and when clicked either opens to all the individual video files for selection, one click on any and they play in Vlc. I suppose I could also put a nice folder full of favorite music files preset to always open in Dropsound, SkiTunes, Play, Cog or maybe iTunes, but I haven't tried that yet, but it is a cool idea if I do say so myself and I just did didn't I? Also note that you don't have to go that far, you can have Yadal just stick to lauching aplications, and you could even go a step furhter by clicking a preference box so yadal won't open anything but applications. Since I periodically juggle around my app files, folders or delete one and add a new one, I open up yadal's "configure" from the Yadal selections and move the apps around, delete some or add those which I wish to use more often. As you add new applications, yadal conveniently has a pop up window which opens automatically to remind you that you may with a click add that application to Yadals configuration. But there is no reason to have ALL your apps configured in, you can just set it so that your favorites are handy, eliminating clutter. I have never had any problems with Yadal. Also, if you don't like Yadal you can delete it without any loss. [alert admin]

ffmpegX 0.0.9x r2 (Mac OS X)

ffmpeg is GREAT!

I use ffmpeg on Mac OS X PPC 167 17 inch for stripping the audio off of videos I have, so i can play the music elsewhere, for example on a CD in my car. For example an avi file of a live concert to Mp3. This app will convert such a vast array of types of video files I think it would be hard to imagine you have some file type that this won't accomplish. If the creators want a wider audience of users they might consider giving it a name which is not only cool sounding but one that also tells what it will do for them; Video Converter-VideoVerter,VidConvert, VidAudioConVert etc?? . It is simple enough for anyone who needs something converted, just drag and drop and aminor setting or two, and so you don't have to be a geek to utilize this. I have had no trouble with it and I am no super wiz. ffmpeg is a good partner with the free "Max" audio files converter, which can also compress large audio files to smaller Mp3 etc., for playback from disk in my car CD player for example. Namely 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Namely is Perfect!

Does one thing, does it well. It's free and easy. It deserves a cooler name though, one that tells more clearly what the app does, something, like Zaplaunch, Keylaunch, or Qi Launch, Qwiklaunch, PsychicLaunch or something which flatters it, as the title "Namely" is so plain it understates the convenience of having this app. People who want more than this app offers, can dig in and figure out how to configure Butler or go even further with Quicksilver, but those who prefer simplicity will love this faultless app launcher that requires no configuring. In my case, under two seconds, just three strokes and my app is up. One key to open "Namely," two keys to indicate which app I want, like the letters "Ad" then all my Adobe apps are in the selection list, and my Adobe Photoshop, being opened more frequently, has migrated to the top of the list, as Namely remembers the frequency of your calling up apps, and the app at the top requires a simple "Return," to open it, no need to even arrow or key to it. Love it! I have Mac Os X, PPC 167 17" [alert admin]

Whamb 1.2 (Mac OS X)

They Stole My $30

I bought Wham in February 06, it worked well for a short time until Mac OS X updated to the next level and so I waited peacefully for Whamb to similarly update but it never happened. At first anytime I ran Whamb it initiated a dominoe of trouble in other apps so I messed around, wasted a lot of time, and uninstalled and reinstalled several, eventually being sure that Whamb was the culprit. When i ceased to use Whamb the troubles went away. At it's absolute worst stage, Whamb caused a serious kernal error that screwed up my entire my PPC 17 inch so badly that I had to do an archive and install. I emailed the company three times, from the onset of the trouble, politely I must add, but they never answered my emails. All I did was told them what happened and hoped they would respond with a solution. After 3 months I checked back here to see if anyone else had posted about their troubles or a a solution as I liked Whamb's rich sound and also it's Ogg capability. I was startled to see that it had become freeware, so i knew that many others must've been having trouble too, and that the creators had decided it was not worth fixing. However, it is my view that in such a short time, they should have at a minimum answered my emails, and if truly honest they would have credited what I paid for it back to my credit card, as I hadn't owned it long enough t get much use out of it. So all I can say is where ever these developers go, watch out for them, they do not have the customer in mind when the build and sell their apps - they are crooks! I feel a bit bad about this as they are mostly just students so they say, but I think they ought to stick with freeware if they are not ready to stand by what they make, especially if they take people's money and don't update what they make, nor do they give refunds when they sell something that turns out to be crap.. Here they are: The Whamb Team: * mbuna :: Stéphane Thiell :: Developer/Student (CF, CoreAudio, Carbon, IOKit, Unix) :: My projects * mcdux :: Grégory Thiell :: Graphics Mastah * FlyMac :: Kevin Roettger :: UI Advisor, Management, AppleScript Guru and Docs * Jeb :: Jean-Edouard Babin :: TOFH (Tester Of The Hell) and n4x0r Guru * Philou :: Philippe Sainte-Marie :: Mac OS X Management Guru * Thomas :: Thomas Deniau :: Evolution and Standards Advisor, Cocoa Developer for Whisky * nl :: Nicolas Lapomarda :: AOL Tester #@! and Cocoa Developer for Whisky [alert admin]

Dropsound 2.90 (Mac OS X)

Love the idea yet have one problem

I'll begin by explaining why Dropsound does things for me that I can't get from iTunes. I have two 250 gb external drives full of music that is separated by band in folders that are additionally sorted based on type of music and I have all of my iTunes music in one folder on one external drive, but I also keep another folder with the music in the original form that i obtained it, which may be in flac, aiff, mp3, Ogg etc. Some of it I additionally convert with "Max" to Mp3, sometimes strip audio files from video with "ffmpeg" for iTunes playback availability. i playback flac and Ogg files with the excellent apps "Cog" or "Play." All are free. My original archive audio folders also hold the music with accompanying supplemental data such as text files and additional cover artwork in both larger and smaller files sizes, so if I just dump it all into iTunes it is harder to find. (I',m a pack rat). Sometimes my iTunes external drive gets full and in the interum I am juggling the music around to roms and elsewhere, until I get a buy larger external drive, i can't yet bother to drop it into iTunes. Some music i also play so rarely that I do not bother to add it to iTune's folder. Once and a while I decide i want to play some of this archived music though, music but do not ever want in iTune's folder, so "Sounddrop" is a nice way to drag and drop a folder and listen to it without loading all the music into iTunes. If I go to iTunes preferences and shut off "Copy to iTunes Music Folder When Adding to Library," and try to just play the music, iTunes will play a few songs but not the entire set I've dropped in, I am not sure why it does not play them all. So again, i hoped Dropsound would be the solution , but sometimes Dropsound also won't play more than the first song in the que. I set dropsound preferences so that it is set to "Play Continuously" and also "Read folders as deeply as Possible," so I am not sure why Dropsound won't play the entire que. Any ideas how to enable this function other than what I've done? i know I'll get it straightened out so I am still giving "Dropsound" five stars for it's simplicity, and I give iTunes 5 stars for it's complexity! I am also experimenting with shoutcast-like "MacAmpLight" for similar usage as Dropsound. [alert admin]
