FileMaker Pro 8.5 (Mac OS X)
How to ride roughshod over your customers
Filemaker have promised on their website over the last few months that they were working on a Universal Binary version of FM Pro 8. I purchased the software not long before Apple released the Intel line of machines. I now have FM Pro V8, a MacBook Pro, where the performance of the database is only just adequate. Now FM is asking me to fork out an extra $249 (Aust $) to upgrade to version 8.5 so that I can enjoy the extra speed of a Universal Binary and other alleged benefits. This is an appalling way to treat customers. Rather than muck around with so-called extra benefits like web view, why can't they just make a product that can do really useful things like create pivot tables (cross-tabs), such as some SQL variants and Microsoft Access. In fact, I now use Access running on Win XP (under Parallels) on my MacBook and find that it is actually faster then FM Pro v8 on my Mac using OS X. Goodbye Filemaker. I hope others feel as cheesed as I do and walk with their wallets. [alert admin]

PostgreSQL with Management Tools 8.0.3a (Mac OS X)
Can't get to work but excellent support from developer
Downloaded the package today, installed but couldn't get working - due to server connection refusal. Sent an email to developer. Dru answered within an hour (Late night in the US, midday here in Adelaide Australia), and we worked thru via email some possible causes. We then connected via iChat audio, the result being a script emailed to me within minutes. Although I haven't solved the problem yet, this developer stands out as one with the right attitude. And hopefully in time (soon?), the installer and tools will evolve to a high standard - the Mac platform sorely needs a good SQL package AND clever GUI tools. The existing db offerings from Filemaker and 4D are good up to a point but a fully compliant SQL db plus query tools are really needed for OS X [alert admin]
