Logitech Control Center 2.4.0 (Mac OS X)

Best driver for Logitech mice

This is a better driver than USB Overdrive (my old favorite driver) and Steermouse at least for the Revolution mouse. I had tried both after being fed up with LCC being loaded in with every process, seemed pretty shady. USB Overdrive could not map the thumb wheel properly, and SteerMouse failed to configure a middle mouse click for Maya. I have had no serious trouble with the Logitech driver, it was updated promptly for Leopard and I have yet to find something I cannot configure with it. My only complaint is that the click wheel on the revolution has stopped locking, but this may be a hardware issue. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Too slow on PPC

Maybe the big feature of Word 2008 was that it was Intel-native, but apparently they forgot to optimize it for PowerPC as well. It takes forever to scroll through a complex document using a 2.0GHz PowerMac G5. Also, text lags noticably when typing, i.e. I have to type, then wait for the system to catch up. The new file format takes longer to save and open, and sometimes produces larger files than the doc format despite the zip compression. Using QuickLook is hit or miss with the new file format, sometimes you can get a preview, but once your document gets bigger and more complex it gives up and does not offer any preview. If you have your scrollbars setup in System Preferences to "Jump to here" instead of "Jump to the next page", Word will instead ignore any attempts to click in the scroll bar to scroll. (It will still move the scroller, but the page will not scroll.) This is unbelievably annoying. On the plus side, keeping the toolbars in the document window is a better interface, and is more maclike, though I would have preferred the Word 2007 interface that let you display two pages side by side. Also, I have not had any crashes yet, which is more than I could say about the old Office. Basically, the new Office is as slow on my desktop as the old Office was on my MacBook. I am considering going back to 2004 on my desktop at least. [alert admin]

iRooster 1.2b2 (Mac OS X)

Great new features

It's great to finally see the rooster automagically taking off the mute key, that had been the bane of my existance when it didn't have a test-alarm feature, that and my roommate tweeking the nob of my stereo to the left or right during the night. Take the b2 off the end of the version number and I'll feel better about downloading this though, if there's anything I trust using beta software for, the software that keeps me from sleeping through quizes isn't it. Hotel Gadget 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Amazing

The word-image association is great fodder for intellectual meditation. I was amazed at how my imagination will create a relation between the images and words. By running this mixed-media art perhaps I will keep the right side of my head limber. On an eye-candy note, it might be nice if the camera could navigate to the next door and go through it, rather than fading out each time. But something tells me that might also change the impression of the art. About the price: I think the shareware fee is fair. It is nice that we get to sample the art before deciding whether we will donate. [alert admin]

BIAS Peak DV 3.2.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Peak DV is a good audio program.

I don't know what everyone is going on about. The upgrade process is rather convoluted, but that is just because there is a very usable free trial that becomes the full version with an authorization code. I haven't bought 4.0 and don't know if it's possible to upgrade from 3, but at least I was able to upgrade the copy that came with Final Cut Pro 2 to the 3.2.1 version. Very good option for basic sound editing needs. I used to use Amadeus, but numerous playback and conversion issues brought me back to Peak. Very fast and responsive interface, good support for the newest mac models. A couple stability problems but I haven't found anything better so far. [alert admin]

MT-NewsWatcher X 3.4 (Mac OS X)

The Best

I've tried most of the newsreaders, and I keep coming back to this. It may not be as good for files as some of those that seem designed just to grab files from the usenet, but for following threads and actually participating in discussions NewsWatcher hasn't been beat yet. It follows all the standards that Outlook/Entourage breaks, and has a very full-featured filtering capability that is not hard to configure. No matter how you like your newsgroups you can probably configure NewsWatcher so you'll like it. Only quabble some may have is the lack of an all-in-one view, but I prefer the multiple window approach. [alert admin]

MAFFia 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

This is awesome

I've always liked sheeps, and this is entertaining popping caps in them. A simple game but a quite fun diversion from working. [alert admin]

Radeon Enabler 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Sweet!

Sweet! Now I can play my games in delicious Anti-Aliasing without hunting around text files for the darned option (and sometimes having to write it in by hand!) Works great with the Radeon 9800 Pro in the G5, though it's too bad its impossible to get the pivot feature working (I wouldn't think it would need hardware, but apparently it does). [alert admin]

Halo Spawn Timer - Chill out 1.0 (Mac OS X)

A good idea

This is a cool idea. I hope to see it for more levels, I dislike Chill Out. But this would be great for getting a heads-up in online play, it would be possible to rig so it'd know what map was loading, and when items were snatched I would think (I remember seeing an article where it detailed how to read variables in memory though the use of a kernel extension) [alert admin]

Virex X 7.5b1 (Mac OS X)

.Mac

See that b1 next to 7.5? I doubt 7.5 will be on .mac until it's out of beta... Despite all of Apple's public betas I don't think they're quite ready to recommend that all of their users replace their anti-virus software with a beta version. [alert admin]

Random (?) Lock-ups

I have experienced the same trouble if I have two monitors plugged in. Disconnecting one of the screens will help, I believe this a known bug with OS X.

Amazing program, but give students a break

If you have the full version you get the free update. Or, perhaps thats just what my university worked out with Wolfram, as we can license the full version for 20 bucks a semester, 2 processes worth. You have to submit your registration info again and get a new key, but they will give it to you. Not sure if student version is applicable, I actually got e-mail from wolfram telling me how to upgrade.

Retail only

Actually, I've heard that attempting to install the firmware updates on OEM cards WILL affect them, in that it will screw them up irreversibly. Apparently the updater doesn't check the card before applying itself. This is what I heard about the 9800 updater.

Won't install

Try downloading the file with another web browser. Usually a problem like that comes from some intermitant failure of your internet connection or something, and the browser will think it has downloaded the file when it has only gotten a part. If you try to download it again your browser will just get the cached version, so try it again using something different.

Works great!

Uh, Photoshop can directly import the pdf files that Apple's screencapture makes, and will process the colorsync information too. If you want to always capture tiffs for instance, you can edit one the system preference files, I don't remember which, or use something like TinkerTool to do that for you.

What about the older iPods and Lossless encoding?

I think the newer iPods have faster processors, letting them play back the more advanced codec.

The installer on the DVD does not work.

Maybe your disk is scratched or defective. You should take it back to the store for a free replacement.

Thanks, Beeline...

I remember there used to be an AfterDark module called Modern Art that had a Pollack mode. It was hillarious.
