MOX Optimize 2.1.2 (Mac OS X)
WHY PAY $$$ - FreeWare alternatives exist and most work better...
This product is shareware and wants $$$ to continue to allow you to alter the preference files on your system. (Oddly enough, the author seems to have pirated someone else's icon. See other comment in this thread.) You could of course, just alter those preference files yourself (with programs such as TextEdit, HexEdit, Plist Editor Pro etc.) or you could use other FREEWARE software to change the settings. Here are some listed on VersionTracker right now. Corel KnockOut 2.0 SP1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I installed Corel Painter IX TBYB on my OS X 10.3.8 system. I then installed Corel KnockOut 2 (2.77 with 2.0c plug in.) I set permissions to read/write for both folders and their contents. I was able to repeatedly open photos in Painter, use the KnockOut plug in (which transfers the working layer to the KnockOut application,) process and apply - over and over and over. (The only bug I noticed was if I accidentally selected Quit from within KnockOut when it had been launched from the Plug in via Painter it would generate the "Unexpectedly quit" message. No biggee although it does make me wonder why the Quit option is there. Next I downloaded this update titled Corel KnockOut 2.0 Update. It updated my version 2.77 application to 2.88.The plug in remains 2.0c. Upon launching Corel Painter IX again and attempting to use KnockOut, not much happened. Blue & white beachball cursor appeared. The program seemed frozen. Manually launched the KnockOut 2 application and my working layer appeared. I was able to edit but Corel Painter never regained its composure after the blue & white cursor had appeared - KnockOut was running but Painter appeared to be frozen. I quit both. I found and trashed all the KnockOut preferences & the application and plug in (and a temp folder in / which may have been Painter.) I also trashed the Painter prefs. I reinstalled KnockOut 2.77 again. And it works again. Repeatedly, without restarting. [alert admin]

Sim Theme Park 2.1.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
What is wrong with you guys? Do you need a 12 step program or what? Original CD is titled "Theme Park" Installer is named "Install STP" Game data file is named "SimTheme Park" (Note the lack of a space between Sim and Theme.) Read Me file refers to the software as "SimTheme Park" Non-U.S. versions are called "Theme Park World" Updater to version 2.1.4 is called "STP/TPW 2.1.4 Updater" 2.1.4 Updater Read Me is called "Theme Park World 2.1.4 Read Me" That read me is titled "Theme Park World 2.1.4 Read Me" The install instructions say to run "Theme Park World 2.1.4 Updater" (which is not the name of the updater, see above.) VersionTracker entry is "Sim Theme Park" (note the space between Sim and Theme.) Why all the confusion guys??? [alert admin]

Sim Theme Park 2.1.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I recently purchased this game from a bargain bin at a local store. I inserted the CD and found the Read Me which lists the name of the software as "SimTheme Park". I came to version tracker to get the carbonized application and searched for "SimTheme". NO MATCHES. Has the name of this product officially changed or is it that the publisher just can't remember the names of their own products? [alert admin]

Dupseek 1.2 (Mac OS X)
This software is so nice I just had to post twice! :)
To the developer: Did I mention that I LOVE YOU? :) One idea for an additional feature in a future release is for video files (such as MPEGs.) I frequently download video files and end up with multiple files with similar names. Some of these files are exact duplicates and already handled by dupseek. Some are not actually duplicates but differentlty rendered versions of the video - which I generally keep. However, often the duplicates are incomplete subsets and that's what I'd like to deal with. If dupseek had an option to compare files in a directory - even when the file size does not match - it would be able to remove files that are identical but incomplete (exact match subsets!) For example, dupseek could compare a directory containing several files of different sizes and then remove the files that are exact content matches to a more complete version of the file. File1.mpg 20 Megabytes, complete File2.mpg 18 Megabytes - identical but incomplete File3.mpg 6 Megabytes - identical but incomplete File4.mpg 12 Megabytes - not an identical subset (different encoding perhaps) File5.mpg 1.1 Megabytes - identical but incomplete Now wouldn't that be nice? (Of course I'm assuming that the file content is identical to the end of the smaller file even though it is incomplete.) [alert admin]

Kudos & Thank You! This is by far the best duplicate file removal tool I've had the pleasure of using. The included documentation explained the process by which the software compares files and and I am confident that files it declares to be duplicates are in fact duplicates to my satisfaction. The automated mode is wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! I do agree that VersionTracker is perhaps not the best forum for CLI (command line interface) programs as most VersionTracker users are not familiar with Unix (or Perl - not that the software categories at VT are Mac OS X, Mac OS 8/9, Windows and Palm - no flavors of *nix at all!) Perhaps www.entropy.ch, osx.freshmeat.net, darwinports.opendarwin.org, sourceforge.net or www.osxgnu.org would be more appropriate. That said, for those of you in the GUI (graphical user interface) crowd, you aren't going to find a better duplicate file tool than this - if you really need such a tool it would be well worth your time to learn to use it from the command line. Once you are comfortable with the command structure its actually very easy to use and the automated process only requires opening Terminal, typing 23 characters and dragging two folders with the mouse: "cd (be sure you pressed the spacebar, then drag the dupseek program folder to the Terminal window and press return) ./dupseek -b kill (be sure your left a space and then drag a folder of files to check into the terminal window and press return.)" Duplicate Catcher 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)
The demo will NOT move files to the trash. ![]()

I completely forgot to mention that the unregistered version will NOT move duplicates to the trash (in other words, this is not a fully functional demo of the software.) Also, it was not readily apparent that to show the list of all duplicate files found required a select-all in the side list of matched groups. The software does not then select the tertiary duplicates (ala the WONDERFUL Utility Dog which is alas for OS 9 only) thus the user must manually select duplicates via shift or control clicking and then select "Move to trash" or press the delete key only to be greeted by a dialog (you could save your users a whole lot of time by letting them know right off the bat that the there is no point in selecting files in this crippled DEMO) stating: "Advanced Feature Moving files to the trash is one of Duplicate Catchers advanced features. Woudl you like to be taken to our website to learn more about these features and how to enable them?" So the primary purpose of the software is an advanced feature? And incidentally, Duplicate "Catchers" should have an apostrophe (Duplicate Catcher's) as it is possessive. [alert admin]

MrClean 1.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

I just downloaded and ran Mr. Clean. First I tried drag-and-dropping a folder onto the icon. That didn't work. I launched the app and drug the folder to the application window. Nothing happened. I clicked the "Select Folder/Volume to scan" button and was greeted by the standard open dialog box. Dragging a folder to that window worked (of course.) I selected the "Remove duplicates with changed names" option (which seems a bit of a misnomer given that I had no intention of actually removing the files - shouldn't it be "Search for duplicates with changed names"?) I noticed two small black triangles with the exact appearance of the standard "click-this-triangle-to-show-more-info" icons used by the OS and other programs. Clicking them does nothing, they are apparently decoration. The "Detailed log" option was on by default, excellent, just the way I like it. I clicked the "Just look for unwanted files and log" button. It was very slow compared to other duplicate file finding software I have tried (today.) For an unnerving length of time the progress bar did nothing at all and then finally shot to the half-way point, stayed there as it listed subfolder names and then shot to 100%. Yet another progress bar that doesn't accurately depict progress. The program produced a log and I immediately tried to expand the window to read the log because it is displayed in a very small text box. There is no resize corner icon but the maximize/zoom (green light) button extended the window vertically (and oddly moved it from where I had placed the window to the far left side of the screen as in location 0,0.) I read the log and again clicked the zoom button. To my surprise, the window did not return to its former small size but rather moved about 25 pixels to the right. Clicking the zoom button repeatedly causes the window to dance back and forth between the two locations but has no effect on the window's size. A banner message above the log window reads "Command click on log to magnify font." That works although it only magnifies the first time, the second time it reduces the font to the original size. The log displayed a list of paths to files that it had (somehow) determined to be duplicates. The filenames were reduced to 31 character names ala Classic. I am not running Classic, I am running 10.3.8 and virtually every file I create has a name longer than 31 characters. Because of the truncated names I was unable to determine if the files it listed included ALL instances of a given file or only tertiary copies of the file (and not the first instance.) This renders the software utterly and completely useless for me. Next I tried to ascertain how the software had concluded that the files were duplicates (are they EXACT byte-by-byte matches?) I could find no explanation in the program itself and no help menu was evident. I checked the Read Me file. No documentation regarding how files are compared is included. I did however note that the Read Me mentioned a few things that had not been evident within the application such as "HOLD DOWN COMMAND KEY TO STOP PROCESS." I would never have guessed although it would have successfully cancelled had I typed the STANDARD command-period to cancel. The documentation also mentioned that when scanning for empty folders it may need repeated runs to actually remove them all. The developer could first remove invisible files and then use an AppleEvent to perform a depth first deletion of empty folders and thus avoid having users run the program several times to trash empty folders. find (path) -d -type d -exec rmdir {} \; Due to the truncated filenames and the uncertainty as to how files were compared to determine which files are duplicates, I quit the software and moved it to the trash. Duplicate Catcher 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)
Manual selection of the duplicates is annoying. ![]()

I just downloaded and ran Duplicate Catcher 1.3.2. Upon launch I was reminded that the software is shareware and that certain "advanced features" are disabled. I immediately dragged-and-dropped a folder on the open application window. Nothing happened. Using the pop-up I selected "Custom" as the search start location and a drawer slid out. There was no open file dialog box and nothing indicating that I was to drag-and-drop a folder into the drawer. But of course, that was exactly it. Folders must be drug into the drawer area itself, dragging them to the main part of the window or the icon in the dock or the Finder has no effect. I deselected the "Filename" criteria option and chose "Contents". I clicked "Find Duplicates" and it did so fairly quickly. I was curious as to what method had been employed to identify the file contents as being duplicates (is it exact?) But there was no indication on screen whether a byte-by-byte comparison or a checksum was used. I went to the help menu and selected "Duplicate Catcher Help". The response was "Help isn't available for Duplicate Catcher". I checked the Read Me file. No details regarding content based file comparison were included. Without knowing how the program arrived at it's conclusion that my files were duplicates based on content, it is of no use to me as I don't blindly trust other developers, especially when they distribute their software without full documentation. I quit the program and moved it to the trash. This software *looks* useful (the content matching feature is exactly what I am looking for) and could be functional but I'm giving it one star because it is of no use to me whatsoever because of the lack of documentation about the content matching feature. Try typing "/Applications/dupseek1.2/dupseek -h" Also, this program compares files not directories - running it on any .app, .pkg, .mpkg & /rsrc directories could be disastrous so don't use it on your /Applications for instance.

Hi Crackatoa. Try typing CD in Terminal.app and then leave a space and drag the dupseek folder to the terminal window. Click back in the window and press return. That Changes the Directory you are working in to the dupseek directory. Then run dupseek.
