LiquidMac 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Does what it says on the tin...

And does it well! Ok, so it hogs CPU, but I'm hardly going to care about CPU cycles while rocking my MacBook from side to side! Now, if only I could get it to do the same with the icons on my desktop.. THAT would be something! [alert admin]

Perian 0.5 (Mac OS X)

Worked where others failed

I tried Quicktime, MPlayer, and VLC, and none worked with the .AVI files that my new Casio Exilim S770 produces. Perian did. Highly recommended. [alert admin]

Birthday Grapher 1.2 (Mac OS X)

Nice basis for Monte Carlo simulation...

Each year I bet my student class that two students will share a birthday. Nice to see this example worked through using something very much like a Monte Carlo simulation! Of course, it would be fun, if possible, to add parameters such as the probability distribution for the initial assignment of 'birthdays' to each member of the room (birthdays neither have a uniform (flat) nor normal distribution, but depend on the seasons, vacation times, and even power outages and major televised sports events!). This would then be a VERY useful example of Monte Carlo simulation. But like zonkerz hinted in another review, a 'stop' button would be useful to avoid force-quit when setting the number of trials too high for whichever machine you're running on! Nice job! Thanks! PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.1 (Mac OS X)

comment on pricing

From the developer's website: "PDF Browser Plugin 2 is free for not-for-profit activities if used at home or at educational institutions" - Yes, £69 is a lot when Acrobat is out there for free (but give me PDF BP anyday), but by charging this amount, I assume that the developer can subsidise his development of a tool that people like me or my students can use for free. If you're using it for profit, then pay for it out of your profits... [alert admin]

NewsFire 0.21 (Mac OS X)

Fast, efficient, unobtrusive

Does what it says. But seeing it in action you realize how slick this is. Have tried various other RSS aggregators, but this has the most unobtrusive UI (to my mind). Try it... [alert admin]

BlogWave Studio 1.1.4 (Mac OS X)

Demo won't publish to .Mac

Like others, I can't get the demo to publish to .Mac - if the developer could correct this, it would allow me (and those others) to test out functionality (e.g. changing existing entries, etc. etc.). It looks good, and it may persuade me to switch.. And thanks to morps_dotmac for the link to his blog - it shows the power of BlogWave Studio. [alert admin]

TechTool Pro 4.0.2 (Mac OS X)

run from eDrive

I tried to optimize my Cube directly from the CD, and it didn't manage it - crashed each time. I couldn't create an eDrive without optimizing (so it said). In the end the following worked: I just optimized 'files only' (so it just defragments the files, not the disk), then it managed to create the eDrive. When I then started up from that, and optimized, it all worked perfectly. And despite the crashes, and the need to rebuild various volume directories (that took it an age to do), everything's working fine. [alert admin]

SoundConverter 20040323 (Mac OS X)

Easy app, excellent support

I use this to batch convert 500 files at a time, and although I'm using only a small subset of formats, I've found this invaluable. I needed sd2 format also, and the developer responded within about 24 hours, and when I found a bug, it was fixed the same evening (sadly it was a while between initial release of the sd2 version and my noticing the bug - sorry). I appreciate the comments re. licensing, but for those of us that need to convert formats in a professional setting, this is a must-have. And the rapid response is worth it alone. If you NEED to batch convert, $10 or $30 isn't an issue..quality software and support IS. [alert admin]

PDF Browser Plugin 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Very useful

This does just what it says, and appears to do it well, and quickly. The only feature I'd like to see added is the ability to select text (and/or images). Navigating the pages is easy (one reviewer couldn't - but so far it works from keyboard using both arrows and standard left-click - incidentally, right-click or menu selection allows you to 'save as..' when you find you *do* want to download the PDF). An excellent utility. Bit expensive, though :) [alert admin]

Panther Showdown 1.2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

not quite the same

I agree with one of the posts below: it's missing the frames that make it look like the numbers are flipping down. Also, the Prefs, About, and Quit buttons are a big distraction. I prefer the original version that this was based on (and which lacked those buttons). But it does what it says. Now... if only I could get something that really DID look like the apple version, as a regular clock for my desktop, THEN I'd be happy... As a European, I'm not too bothered by the countdown, as we're getting Panther at a different time anyway... [alert admin]

Panther access better than Jaguar

I couldn't connect to Windows 95 machines from Jaguar, but I can now with Panther. I too wonder whether I still need Sharity. I haven't used it now since Panther. But I can only speak from my experience with Windows systems, so maybe it does something that Panther can't do with other systems. That said, Sharity was always extremely reliable, and I would recommend it to anyone having problems connecting to…
