just out of curiousity, has anyone kept track of how many such utilities (to transfer music from iPod to hard disk) there are out there? I'd love to see a feature/price comparison chart, because it seems like there are dozens at least. [alert admin]

Ibis 2.6 (Mac OS X)
while it's nice that there are a couple of options, both freeware, why anyone would prefer Ibis to Osiris is beyond me. Because of the high ratings I tried this, and it doesn't hold a candle to Osiris. Messy interface, fewer options, requires an external OSAX to run (which it told me had expired even though I just installed it before launching Ibis). All in all seems functional but there are better options. Just over-rated here. [alert admin]

Traktor DJ Studio 2.1.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
the readme for this update says "Windows 98 bug fixed". That's it. Still no support for separate audio devices (like built-in + iMic) to use as a true monitor. (although the last revision apparently added a "preview", but it's not a true monitor.) Therefore it's still useless to me. I might buy this when the iMic is fully supported but not before. Carracho Server 1.0b8r6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
a bug fix for a bug introduced exactly when?? Thanks for that really helpful description of the update. basically carracho is dead-ware. the developers are completely non-responsive, to the point of hiding in the shadows. maybe if they charged for this thing a year ago it would have moved a bit, but each new release is basically: 1) extending the beta expiration date and 2) correcting a bug introduced in the last extention of the beta date. good functional software but dead in the water. we'll believe the cocoa version when we see it, and then it will be buggy and will take 2 years to iron out the basic bugs. sad. NoteTaker 2003 1.5.4 (Mac OS X)
installing the demo was really quite frustrating. i downloaded the full version by "mistake," found I needed a demo license, but then that e-mailed license couldn't be used on the full version so I had to re-download the trial version. I wouldn't comment if the product blew my socks off but it didn't. First of all, it is noticably slow. The interface is not all that, and importing is not very full featured--all you are presented with is an import dialog without any info about how files are imported. I'll hold off on rating this until I've played around with it a bit more. However, I really don't see why the Mac market is so lacking in a truly full featured clipping & note taking application. One that can easily (ie, drag & drop) import whole files of folders of all formats (html, txt, word, rtf, pdf, tab-delimited text, xls, etc), one with good html & pdf rendering, one with selective synchronization betweeen computers (ala iSync) and Palm OS, some mind mapping capability, and with some limited qualitative data analysis. DevonThink comes close, but is still lacking. Inspiration & Nova Mind do the Mind Mapping. Microsoft Entourage & Personal Organizer are PIMs that handle synchronizing notes to Palm. But nothing does it all in one integrated package. [alert admin]

Apple iChat AV 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Why does a chat program require a restart? Apple seems to be the only company left that makes you restart to install software. I force quit the installer to apparently no ill effect. [alert admin]

MP3 Rage 5.7 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
although a bit clunky, this is still the best mp3 tag editting tool out for the mac. each update adds a couple new features, which are usually worth looking forward to. I only wish development were a bit faster. No AAC support yet is a bit disappointing, considering the MP3 CMM (another product, forget the title) had that out in days after iTunes 4. And thie CMM for MP3 Rage needs work. I can't yet get the new "folder routing" feature to work at all. Still a product well worth buying if you work with mp3s. [alert admin]

Wroble 1.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
It's great to finally see a version of Scrabble (®, tm, license guaranteed in perpetuity for ever and ever to Hasbro) for OS X, this has a long way to go still. The interface is simple and very OS X, which is nice. The word list is apparently customizable although I'm not sure whether you could use a OSPD file with it or not. Drawbacks are that it deviates from the Scrabble layout (no double word score in the center, for instance, not giving any incentive to lay out a good starting word, as there are no bonuses for first turn). Also the score numbers are not on the tiles (so not sure if the scoring is the same or not, but at first it doesn't seem accurate.) FORK for example with the R on a double letter score should be 13, I think, not 12. Also, you can see the opponent's tiles, which you shouldn't be able to do. Preferences are not saved between launches. The option to auto-pick tiles does not have any effect--whether on or off you still have to click tiles from the bag after the turn. If the computer can't find a word it will pass, and there doesn't seem to be an option to draw new tiles--just to abort the game. [alert admin]

Could be wrong because I haven't tried it, but can't you just open up the appropriate port in your firewall and share across the internet with a valid IP? [alert admin]

I get the same error even with d7. Still doesn\'t work for me, sadly.
