DVD Spanner 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Good idea but flawed

I've been waiting for a tool like this for some time. I have a lot of folders of video footage where the files are too large to fit on a single DVD. Compressing them using other tools and splitting those archives has been too cumbersome. So, I was excited that someone had developed an easy way to deal with that. The interface is simple and intuitive. No complex settings are involved. You just choose the folder and select your DVD burner drive, and click "burn" to begin. It's quick and does the verification process automatically after burning each disc. You can choose to mount or eject the discs when complete. Unfortunately, as the previous poster has pointed out, there is a major interface flaw. If one of your discs is no good, you have no choice to insert a new disc! Your only choice is to go on to the next DVD in the set. Now what? In some cases the bad disc isn't even a bad disc, it works fine on the next insertion. So now, you go through the whole process and have one or two unburned discs in the middle of the sequence. To burn them, you have to start from scratch and burn all the others to get to the empty space in your set. What a waste of time and discs! When it encounters a disc it can't initially write to, it needs to give you the choice to insert a replacement disc and carry on normally. So, for now I have to say that this is not ready for prime time. As soon as it addresses this problem, I would be happy to give it a high rating. [alert admin]

Harmony Remote 7.3.0 (Mac OS X)

Terrible software, okay remote

I agree with the reviewers here on the absurd structure of the Mac software. These guys broke a universal rule of Mac software by insisting on placing those folders on the user partition. Horrible. The interface is awkward to use. The remote is limited in some of the most ungainly ways. Great concept, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. On the other hand, the software does offer Mac support, unlike Pronto and some other similarly styled universal remotes that only support Windoze. So we should at least offer some encouragement for supporting the platform. But why can't someone get it right? None of these remotes, of any brand, has figured out how to do this in a way that users expect or need. Pronto comes closest, but it too has its crazy limitations and cumbersome interface quirks. Apple should consider building a universal remote. [alert admin]

Belkin UPS Bulldog 3.0.6 (Mac OS X)

Product to avoid

I have used APC brand UPS units for years. They have great software that runs exactly the way it should, popping up only when you have a real power outage situation and then doing its job to shut down your system. I had to buy the Belkin brand UPS unit because it was the only one with the specific shape that would fit in a given space. What a disappointment! The unit seems well thought out, but the Mac software is just awful. You can't move the software into any folder (like Utilities) or it will stop working. When it installed, it pops up every minute or so with a "UPS disconnect" warning dialog (happens even more often on the iMac Intel DuoCore than on the G5, but happens often on both systems). The menu offers items that don't appear in other, more logical places. The preferences dialog is confusing. And the Mac software appears to be an orphan. I came here hoping for a more recent version, but Belkin seems to have shut down development back in 2005. Shame. Buy an APC brand UPS if you want a great experience. The Belkin software is an exercise in frustration. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.4.16 (Mac OS X)

Best scanner software, but no network capability

I have found Vuescan to be the finest scanning software available, bar none. Over the years, with many different scanners and manufacturer-supplied software in use, I have always found Vuescan to deliver far superior results and to do so in an efficient and elegant way. It has been one of the best software expenditures I've ever made. Unfortunately, when I moved my office I discovered that Vuescan does not work with scanners that are connected over a network such as Ethernet or Bluetooth. This is a shame because my new office structure doesn't allow my scanner to be connected via USB. I'll miss the use of Vuescan but wanted to encourage others to use it because it is so outstanding. StartupSound.prefPane 1.1b1 (Mac OS X)

Can't install

I am trying to install this on my G5 2.0DP and it hangs on the screen that asks me to select a disk. I've let it run for half an hour but it continues to remain on that screen with the motion cursor going. Obviously a bug. I have two internal drives plus a USB external and four Firewire external drives. Can someone tell me which file in the package I can just place into my prefpanes folder to install manually? I'd really like to install this. [alert admin]

Toast Titanium 7.1 (Mac OS X)

Impossible-to-use website

The updater requires you to login to the website. Not usually an issue, except that the Roxio website doesn't work. Not on Firefox anyway. Trying to create a login shows a checkbox with no text that is apparently a privacy checkbox. If you don't check it off, you get an error message that you must check the "privacy" checkbox, whatever that is. If you do check the unnamed checkbox, you get a "general login error." Get with it, Roxio. Incompatible websites are a huge disappointment in this day and age. [alert admin]

Fast DVD Copy 4.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Has worked well for me

I buy many costly "vertical market" DVDs that cost over $100 each and often cannot be replaced because they are limited-edition productions. Wanting to ensure that I had backup copies in case something goes wrong with the originals, I tried several products and none of them fit the bill except Fast DVD Copy. It has been able to create working copies that run fine on most of my players. There have been occasional problems, even on my dual 2.0 G5. Sometimes the application hangs on the initialization of it's launch and I have to force quit. This is most common if I jump the gun and put a blank DVD in my "burn" drive before launching the program. Also, if a DVD is NOT Macrovision-encoded (which isn't always apparent), then the copy produced will not work in many DVD players unless you turn off the checkbox before you burn. I've learned to run Toast first just to check unless I'm sure, because Toast tells you if the original is encoded. From time to time, I find that the copies produced by Fast DVD Copy don't run in all my players. Most common are problems with my tiny portable 5" Panasonic LS5. This can be annoying because I take copies of my DVDs when I travel rather than bringing the costly originals. However, the small portable player also has some problems with other discs so it isn't necessarily a problem with this specific application's copying process. [alert admin]

Snail Mail 1.3 (Mac OS X)

Best of the category

Even though I use Tiger, I find the built-in envelope printing from Address Book to be insufficient for my needs. I want to be able to print with different envelope "styles" for business and personal use. After trying 5-6 of the available choices, I found Snail Mail to be far superior to the others. It's easy to use, allows excellent management of font formatting, including the return address. The only thing I found odd was how the boundaries are set for the addresses, which makes sense but at the same time feels unintuitive. Highly recommended for anyone who needs sophisticated envelope printing capabilities! [alert admin]

Although you are correct that Domains by Proxy is a vendor that hides information about domain names, there is a very good reason for using them and I recommend to all my clients that they use a proxy service (usually Domains by Proxy). Spammers LOVE domain names that are not protected. If you don't use a service like this, both your E-mail and analog spam goes up exponentially, with no end in sight. It's an…

Why pay more?

I use Missing Sync and generally love it. But after trying their memo conduit I went back to iPalm Memo because the Missing Sync version has a very annoying lag when typing on the desktop version that makes it unusable. iPalm Memo is quick and effortless. Well worth the $9.

Design Bug and update request - Poll scanner

Agreed. This has bugged me for the past several years as well. As the finest scanning app in existence, this is a minor yet very annoying shortcoming.
