Acquisition 132.7 (Mac OS X)

Review, Tips, and Commentary on Acquisition

I've used the paid version of Acquisition for many years, and I have a love/hate relationship with it. Let me address a few issues I've come across, and some fixes. I, like many others, have lost many transfers in process. It's a giant pain in the butt. However, I believe that one of the fixes for this is to set your Energy Saver settings to not allow the computer to sleep, nor to allow hard disks to sleep (just put your display to sleep). Another tip, is that when you enter keywords to block files from appearing in the search, you need to start the search over again for it to take affect. In my opinion, the biggest "issue" is that this is a Java app, and there's no fix to that - just make sure you have the latest Java update available from Apple (use 5.0, not 1.4.2 in Java control panel - 5.0 is 1.5.x). Compared to the competition for Gnutella network apps (Frostwire, Limewire, Acqlite, Cabos, and to a degree - Poisoned), I still find Acquisition to be the best of the bunch, and it's a universal app - I just wish it wasn't written in Java. Cabos comes close, but is limited to 3 network ultrapeer connections and not universal, and Frostwire is universal but it seems to find very few files in comparison, and I haven't tinkered with Poisoned a lot, but it was problematic for me. Just because I say Acquisition's the best of the bunch doesn't mean I like it, it needs some work - but not as much as the others. As for registration issues, I haven't had a problem, and I generally install the app 3-4 times per year since I float around on different computers. As for support, I can see that the developer's site is lacking for documentation, and there's not a clear way to contact them for support - even for paid users. The developer has turned his attention to torrent technology, but I still find that file transfers are too slow with the torrent network, and there are too many mouse clicks to get the torrent file in the first place. A few things I'd like to see with Acquisition are: 1) network status - as in verification that the program can communicate as required through a firewall, and 2) the ability to select multiple searches and apply the file-type and file-size filter tools to the batch, 3) ability to connect to more than 5 ultrapeers, 4) larger range in ability to ignore file sizes under X megabytes (but you can hack the preference file manually for that). Hope this review helps! If someone can recommend a killer gnutella p2p app that is universal binary, and puts Acquisition to shame, please share. [alert admin]

Review, Tips, and Commentary on Acquisition

Forgot to add, that when frequently when I get dropped from the Gnutella network with Acquisition, a review of my firewall log often shows that an attack immediately proceeded the network drop. It seems that there are a lot of peeps out there trying to dig into filesharing computers - so make sure you have a good firewall.
