FileCutter 1.3.4 (Mac OS X)

Follow-up on FileCutter and Snow Leopard

After hammering at this (along with some other projects) for a couple of weeks I've determined that FileCutter cannot be reimplemented using Snow Leopard's "replacement" for the context menu plugin mechanism. I will be making available for registered users a package that restores a small subset of FC's functionality under 10.6. I think it will still be useful. But please do not register FileCutter if you have Snow Leopard or expect to upgrade in the near future. [alert admin]

Compost 1.9.5 (Mac OS X)

Compost and Snow Leopard

Compost on Snow Leopard works fine with 2 exceptions. The preference pane, like almost every preference pane that exists today, requires System Preferences to relaunch itself in 32-bit mode. I'm working on a new build that will eliminate that. The other, more serious problem, is with the context menu plugin. Mac OS X 10.6 does not load traditional context menu plugins into 64-bit apps (such as Finder, for example). The recommended fix is to recreate the plugin's functionality as entries in the Services menu, which as conversions go is not small. I am working on it, but it'll be a few days. [alert admin]

Growl 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)

One "fixed" bug still present

"Fixed bug where Growl would fail to clean up .growlRegDict files in the Temporary Items folder, instead leaving them to appear in the Trash when you next logged in" Nope. I'm still getting those files in my trash. G5 running 10.4.11. Also experienced another poster's problem where first install attempt on a MacBook running 10.5.3 failed. [alert admin]

Compost 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Login item bug gone for real now.

Thanks to some assistance from dsdesign, the version of Compost available through the link has really dealt with the rare issue involved with login items. [alert admin]

Compost 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Login item bug still present

The problem inserting Compost as a login item is extremely rare; apparently affecting well under 1% of users. I encourage anyone who can reproduce this to send mail to the contact address VT has. [alert admin]

Compost 1.0 (Mac OS X)

dsdesign, please contact me.

Compost was tested on several configurations. It shouldn't be doing anything destructive to your startup items. Please contact me at the support address provided in the docs so I can try to isolate that and prevent it. [alert admin]

Bookpedia 1.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Early playing looks good

Given that this is leveraging the code in DVDpedia, it shouldn't be surprising that this is a fairly solid 1.0 release. It's quick and pleasant to use. [alert admin]

XML Editor 1.13 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Not a good first impression

Downloaded v1.14 for evaluation purposes last night and it gave a clean bill of health to an XML file that contained an entity not declared in the DTD. Tried to leave feedback to report the error at the developer site and 404'd trying to load the contact page. [alert admin]

Why Aren't release note published by VT regularly on-time?

> Why Aren't release note published by VT regularly on-time? Because in general it's not VT's responsibility to decide what information to show on the page about a given release and scrape it together. The developer provides that information.

POS - do not install until it is stable - not ready for prime time!

Let's see: 1 star for price, on a product that's free? 1 star for quality/stability, on a product that does exactly what's described and for which you gave no examples of instability? 1 star for support, when you never made any attempt to actually get support? 1 star for ease of use, apparently because the documentation doesn't explicitly state that you turn the service off by unchecking the checkbox you used to turn it on? For the second one-star rating…

Nag screen freezes up

The author of this comment wrote to me directly the next day. After brief discussion he determined it was actually a Finder issue rather than any misbehavior on Compost's part.

so sad

That'd be door #1. The current release of Silica is not compatible with Intel-based Macs. I really don't know when it will be because I'm in the middle of a long-term overhaul of which Intel support is the smallest aspect.

Laugh or cry?

"Screensavers have not been necessary for at least a decade and, in any event, they don't do any such thing." Actually they do. While greatly diminished, burn-in is still a reality on modern displays. "The alleged purpose of a screensaver is to avoid "burning in" an image that remains on your screen for hours. (Actually, years used to be more like it!)" It took an extended period to really manifest visibly, but hours at a time over the…

Great

It's quitting because it's actually using the OS's built-in screen saver engine to handle the presentation, and there are several things that can happen on the system that the engine takes as a signal to quit.

Idea for developer

Sorry about taking so long to acknowledge the suggestion. I've looked into it a little bit and it seems like a fairly straightforward task. I'll try to get support in for those this month.

What about secure empty?

Secure delete will be in the next release, but that's not going to be for a while because I'd like to have enough in there to justify a "1.2" label.

Import UPC

Get a barcode scanner. They can be had for $10-15 and I was able to get my 200-disc collection loaded (one at a time; before the mass lookup function was added) into DVDpedia in 20 minutes.

fantastic GUI!

Your wishlist included the ability to add items via barcode scanning. It works fine. It would be nice if there was a mass load function, but you can "Cmd-D, scan, Enter" to your heart's content.
