CandyBar 3.1 (Mac OS X)

expensive bloat

They took what was once a nice little utility to occasionally change a few icons, threw in an application for icon collectors (I'm sure there are some of you out there), doubled the price, offer a five dollar upgrade discount and called it progress. Not everyone needs a tool for cataloging icons just as not everyone needs a butterfly net. You shouldn't have to pay for something you'll never need, or for tools you'll never use. I emailed them about this and they told me they were on the verge of canceling CandyBar as a stand alone application because they weren't getting rich enough off of it. This is what they said they had to do to make money - combine all the apps into one large bloated one and raise the price. I don't believe that. If they can't make money selling their individual applications for a reasonable price then they have a poor business model and should go out of business. No thanks - find a different way to get your Panic profits. [alert admin]

Default Folder X 4.0 (Mac OS X)

opaque is not a good thing

As always I am giving Default Folder high marks for functionality, features and quality. I have used it for many years and have always considered it a must have utility. The new features that have been added are well done and useful. With this new version I must, for the first time, reduce the rating score I give it. The dark opaque menus are very hard for me to read. It is very distracting to be able to see open background windows and text that show through the drop down menus. It's hard to focus on the content of the Default Folder menus while trying to filter out what I see behind them. Add to that the new incredibly ugly black and white icons and the whole thing looks rough and unfinished to me. I know that opaque things are the new rage with all things Leopard now but it is all just unnecessary eye candy to me. Opaque adds nothing, and actually detracts from the ease of use feeling I have had with the Mac in the past. It was a huge mistake for Default Folder to try to look like Leopard. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X PPC 10.4.9 (Mac OS X)

so far so good

Everything works fine including all third party applications & mods I use. I'm not fond of the delay built into the disc eject key, but that is just a minor annoyance. [alert admin]

iView MediaPro 3.1.3 (Mac OS X)

great news

It's great that Microsoft has included "Various Vista compatibility updates" with this release. I was worried about that on my old Mac G4. I feel much better now. This used to be a great piece of software for Mac. Now it's another overpriced piece of MS bloat. How soon until it has some built-in DRM for your media files? It's just a media catalog - what is the $200 for? I'm glad I dropped this a few of years ago. [alert admin]

Default Folder X 3.0.3b7 (Mac OS X)

excellent support and function

I had a minor problem with this beta release. I reported it to the developer and received a prompt reply with a link to a revised beta. The problem was gone and everything is as good as it always has been. I rate Default Folder X as high as any shareware I have. Jon and the St. Clair Software team provide support that is as good as it gets. This is great stuff! [alert admin]

Thoth 1.8.3 (Mac OS X)

still the best

I've been using this reader for over ten years (it was YA-NewsWatcher) and it's better than ever. I've tried all the others and I always end up back with Thoth. I'll keep using it until it becomes extinct. It is a shame that it is no longer available for purchase. I hope the developer changes his mind about that some day. Thanks for the updates Brian. MacLampsX 1.2 (Mac OS X)

works great

I just found this as a replacement for the old Holiday Lights. MacLampsX works great, is a very small size and uses very little processor and memory resources. Now if I can figure out how to make bulbs... This is a nice piece free software. Thanks to the author for his efforts. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 8.0 (Mac OS X)

not this time

The download page would not let me select my Mac OS version number using Safari. I could not get the file. If anything takes more than two clicks to download then it is software I don't need, and I also don't want to install their download spyware manager. When they offer this as a free standing downloadable drag and drop installer maybe I will try it [alert admin]

Adobe Flash Player 9.0.20.0 (Mac OS X)

Why?

What is better now that Adobe controls Flash content on web pages? My old version of Macromedia Shockwave Flash 8.0 r24 works great on all pages I visit with Safari. Reading the reviews below leads me to believe that a better user experience and compatibility are not primary concerns for Adobe. How long will it be before the old Macromedia plugin stops working and we have to give it all up for Adobe? Is this really a good thing? [alert admin]

FinderPop 2.0.0rc1 (Mac OS X)

I's great

It's great to be able to single click on a folder or volume and scroll through a menu of the contents. It works just like it did in OS 9. Just enable this option in the preferences. It's nice to see FinderPop back and I hope donations will keep it back. Keep those pints flowing. [alert admin]

expensive bloat

After exchanging private email with Cabel Sasser from Panic I would like to change part of my review. I retract the words "getting rich enough off of it" and substitute the words "CandyBar not profitable enough as a stand alone application". I still feel that CandyBar could have been upgraded without all the added features and offered as a lower priced upgrade for those of us who wish only to change a few system icons. My original…

opaque is not a good thing

Actually, semiopaque might better describe the Default Folder menus.

opaque is not a good thing

You are correct - I misspoke when I said opaque - but you do understand my meaning. I have difficulty with the semitransparent menus.

Thanks for the great review of Mac OS X 10.4.11. I would never have considered installing this without your words of wisdom first.

Could not locate correct version to update

You have version 11.3.5. You must run all of the updaters - .6, .7 and .8 before you can use this one. That info is in the docs that come with every version download.

I just need ONE feature

You want an application that has just one feature? You could just open a window that contains the file or folder you are working with and then do anything you want to it. Your comment makes no sense. You could also contact the author and request whatever stupid thing you require be added to Default Folder instead of posting this drivel here.
