D2X-XL 1.13.84 (Mac OS X)

This project needs funding! You can help.

I'm not affiliated with the programmers who've been doing all the great work on D2X, but I am a fan. I've donated $50 to the project to help offset their costs, but it's not nearly enough to put a Mac in the developer's hands so he can continue working on the Mac version. Right now D2X is stalled at v 1.13.84 for OS X. While work continues on Win and Linux, without a Mac the developer is unable to fix a few critical bugs in this otherwise-excellent game. If you enjoy Descent please consider making a donation to the product. It doesn't have to be as big as mine, but a few bucks here and there from enough people can help him move the Mac version forward again, keeping us all happily playing D2X for years to come. Donation links are available at the developer's site. [alert admin]

D2X-XL 1.13.85 (Mac OS X)

Latest d/l link 404

The link at the web site to v1.13.85 is broken (404). I'll check back there in a day or so. Thanks. BTW: I'm a donor to the project; I think you do good work, it's been really great getting back into D2, and with your efforts it's better than ever. Hopefully more folks will donate to keep the motivation flowing - I gotta imagine maintaining and enhancing this is a big task. [alert admin]

Revolution 2.8.1 (Mac OS X)

Strongest ROI of any tool I've used

I've been developing commercial applications with Revolution since v1.0, and this latest version is the best yet. In my 20 years as a professional developer I've used more than a dozen tools, and Rev delivers the strongest return on investment for myself and my clients. Its extremely high-level language and rich object model let me go from design to prototype to finished work, all in one environment and in record time. Revolution 2.8.1 may be a minor upgrade, but it represents a significant step forward in both features and robustness. I'm not sure what some of the other comments here are talking about, but I noticed that one of them is the only post in all of VersionTracker that he's made. Maybe he works for a competitor, I don't know. All I know is I'm moving four companies forward with apps we've built with Rev, at a significantly lower cost than we would have incurred using just about anything else. It's definitely a different way of working if you're used to lower-level languages, but once you get the hang of it I'd be surprised if your results aren't like mine. [alert admin]

Republic - The Revolution 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Great concept

...but as a PowerBook user I find my system strained to keep up with it. I don't normally play games, but enjoy a good sim now and then. Republic is a great concept, and with the ongoing issues in the many former Soviet states like Kyrzygstan it remains timely. But alas I can't say I love it. In fact, without the horsepower it needs I can't even say I've finished it. I've left my saved games in place and intend to get back to them, but I'll have to wait until I get a faster machine. I hope the company reps read this and consider the possibility of a redesigned re-release with fewer features, blowing off the graphic glits and focusing on the core strategy which is the heart of the game. This is a wonderful option for people like me who don't play many games but who do find sims and political strategy interesting. I recommend it with the caveats noted above, and in the hopes that the developer will consider bringing the game back to its roots as an interesting political simulation. [alert admin]

Revolution 2.5 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Strongest ROI of any dev tool I've used

Rev is an unusual way of working, but it gives an unusually strong ROI for the brief learning curve. I've been shipping commercial apps with it for years, and this latest release is the most rock-solid yet. Thanks, Rev team! [alert admin]

WebMerge 1.9.3b2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Allen, I don't…

think he downloaded WebMerge, or even read the description carefully. A crontab is a generic scheduler for automating tasks on UNIX systems, and isn't related to generating static Web pages from database files. [alert admin]

MetaCard 2.3.2 (Mac OS 9)

Simply the most…

capable rapid application development tool I've ever worked with, and I've worked just about all of 'em. Probably the fastest interpreter of any 4GL, with a rich and flexible object model, and easy-to-learn HyperTalk-based scripting language. The development environment shows its UNIX roots, which may be an initial turn-off to folks accustomed to ToolBook or HyperCard, but once you learn it you'll be able to do far more than you can with any other cross-platform tool. ThinkFree Office Java Bug report

I can confirm your report. I've also written ThinkFree; we'll see if I get a reply any faster than you. I was surprised that there was nothing at ThinkFree's Help site on this. Seems an obvious omission. Sure wish I had seen your report before I installed the Java update. :(

Hangs on startup, black screen

I managed to find the previous build so I'm back in the game. I also donated US$50 to the effort. It's moving in a good direction, and I'm happy to contribute to see it completed. Thanks for all your hard work.

Hangs on startup, black screen

I can certainly understand your position, but it may be a buit of a catch-22: folks are more likely to donate if it runs. Any chance of handing the code over to Mac developers?

Hangs on startup, black screen

The previous version was much more stable. This one throws the "Bad polygon error" whenever I fire, and after creating a new user it won't let me select "New Game". Is the previous build available?
