DxO Optics Pro 6.0 (Mac OS X)
THIS (version 6) IS WINDOWS ONLY
Does anyone at VersionTracker pay one iota of attention to what they post here? At this time (11/5/09), version 6 is for Windows!!! From the developer's web site: "DxO Labs announces the immediate release of DxO Optics Pro 6 for Windows. DxO Optics Pro 6 for Macintosh is scheduled for release in early 2010. A Macintosh intermediate release, DxO Optics Pro 5.3.6, fully compatible with Snow Leopard, is scheduled for end of November, and will also include support for additional camera bodies." Opera 10.01 (Mac OS X)
Is this version number a misprint? I have version 10.10 loaded and when I check for updates from within the app, it says I'm using the most current version. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 9.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Updated with no problems noted
@ "Adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0" Not sure what that's all about. I installed Apple TV 3.0 while still using iTunes 9.0.1 and it seemed to work fine and recognized my ATV with the 3.0 software. However, I didn't try to actually move anything from my computer to the ATV before updating to 9.0.2 so I don't know if that functionality worked. [alert admin]

CurrencyConverter 1.4.5 (Mac OS X)
The previous complaints about rounding errors are likely not rounding errors at all; rather, merely due to the point in time when the exchange rate conversion factors were last updated (they move constantly throughout the currency trading business day). Try comparing this widget's answers to some of the other currency converters (Yahoo, CNN, etc.) on a weekend when the markets are closed and you'll see they are essentially the same...slight differences due to the converters' internal programming accuracy (CurrencyConverter promises five-digit accuracy) and/or the accuracy of the database each particular converter uses. A valid complaint would be that the developer only allows conversion updates once per hour and you have to manually click the orange circular arrow button on the bottom left of the widget to get it to update. That's plenty good for personal use unless a currency's exchange rate is changing rapidly due to some national/international economic calamity. Obviously for large-sum conversions, one would want to use a dynamically updated currency converter. Memory use is miniscule and no memory leaks were noted. I particularly like the tax feature built into this widget which lets me know what I'll be paying for an item after my credit card company adds on their 2% foreign conversion fee. [alert admin]

AppCleaner 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)
No updates since before Snow Leopard
Makes me a little nervous using a cleaner application which isn't updated after a major OS version upgrade. Here we are quite some time into Snow Leopard and the last AppCleaner update was back in mid-2008. If nothing else, I'd expect to see the developer post a note that the app has no known Snow Leopard issues. Even the AppCleaner web site is totally silent on the issue! As a result of this deafening developer silence on Snow Leopard compatibility, I deleted AppCleaner and installed AppDelete instead. Now I don't want to insinuate that I think the shareware AppDelete somehow does a more thorough job than the freeware AppCleaner, because I don't know. But I do know I don't want a cleaner application mucking around on my hard drive and trashing associated deleted application files (albeit at my direction) when it hasn't been updated since well before a major OS version number upgrade. CNET TechTracker app 1.0 beta 3 (Mac OS X)
What does C|NET do with the feedback? ![]()

What does C|NET do with the feedback? I've been sending in feedback daily...highlighting applications which are not being tracked, identifying applications which have the wrong current version listed, application IDs which are linked to the wrong application, etc...and not a single damn thing has been changed. Sure, I get a nice auto-generated message thanking me for my feedback but nothing gets fixed. Pass this one by, it's a loser at this point! Granted, still in beta...and looks like it'll be in beta as long as Google Mail was since C|NET apparently doesn't have the Mac programming resources to fix the problems in a timely manner. HoudahSpot 2.5.8 (Mac OS X)
Bug fix: Ignored criteria on Leopard HoudahSpot 2.5.9 running on Leopard could ignore criteria and report excess files in search results. Bug fix: Missing files from results When limiting the search to a fixed number of results, HoudahSpot sometimes listed fewer files than requested. Bug fix: Memory leak HoudahSpot could leak memory causing its memory consumption to build up over time. [alert admin]

I don't believe the original can be found on the Canon web site. But copies of the original disk (which can then be upgraded) are available at the usual places.

Freeware RPP is just fine for some users
My normal processor is the $299 DxO Optics Pro Elite but I've actually tried the freeware Raw Photo Processor (2/21/09) you so rudely disparaged. I wanted to see just what a freeware photo processor can actually do for someone on a limited budget or someone who doesn't take enough RAW format photos to warrant purchasing a processing package beyond what came with their camera. And I was quite surprised at RPP's considerable capabilities and the quality…

No corroborating posts thus far
@ "Works perfectly every time" Did you really install the the same version as the several posts above this one referenced? Because those folks sure aren't gushing over version 3.0. In fact, your rousing support for 3.0 hasn't been corroborated by any other post thus far. Perplexing, huh? Affiliated? Or a beta tester maybe?

@ "E-mail updates should let me know which computer's software needs updating" I thought the Terms of Agreement limited beta use of this app to just one computer. So it should be pretty easy to figure out "which" computer needs updating.

Why Aren't release note published by VT regularly on-time?
@ "Because in general it's not VT's responsibility to decide what information to show on the page about a given release and scrape it together. The developer provides that information." Couple rebuttals: 1. The app shows up in bold blue...a priority application...VT should be placing increased increased emphasis on it by definition. 2. Release notes are prominent on the developer's page...not difficult for a VT staffer to cut 'n paste the info...again, this is a bold-blue application which…

Google white paper on predictive value of S.M.A.R.T. status
You're not disagreeing with me; rather, the research Ph.D. at Google who wrote the white paper after studying over 100,000 of their failed drives. That's a pretty statistically valid study! And if you would have read it, you would have seen there are some failure categories for which smartmontools is reasonably predictive. Any chance you fell into one of those categories? Or maybe you just beat the odds. With luck like yours, put some money in…
