cocoAspell 1.4 (Mac OS X)
cocoAspell caused PowerMail to crash every time a new mail window was created in OS X 10.3.2. Disabling the two services it installs, aspell.service and cocoAspell.service, fixed the problem. It's a shame, as this was a really nice program - hopefully the author will eventually be able to fix the incompatibility and find a place to host the project (maybe sourceforge.net, since it's freeware?). least on my Mac, Safari will not download this update. Downloads fine with Chimera, Mozilla, or IE, though. Address complaints to Steve Jobs, not HP. Or better yet, just alert the Safari developers - it is a beta, after all. [alert admin]

CDFinder 4.0.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
for me - in fact, no bugs at all so far. Did a week-long comparison of CD-ROM catalogging programs 2 years ago, and found CDFinder gave me the best bang for the buck. Have never had a problem with it. CDFinder 4.0.1, OS X 10.2.3, Kensington mouse, MouseWorks System Pref v. 2.2. [alert admin]

Xounds 1.3 (Mac OS X)
1.3 in Jaguar: causes apps to quit on starting, *including* Finder and Dock, leaving you no way to launch apps to troubleshoot if you re-log-in, just a cursor and a blue desktop. Remove "~/Library/Application Enhancers/Xounds.ape", either from an OS 9 boot or single-user mode, then remove Xounds and re-install v. 1.2 to fix. Disappointed in Unsanity for not pulling this showstopping update. [alert admin]

Tascam US-428 3.10 (Mac OS X)
me. Can now record audio in 24 bit, 48Khz glory, and the sound coming out of my speakers is audibly better. There are no X-native sequencers to take advantage of the mixing board features of the US-428, but it's great to have a MIDI interface and a four-channel USB audio interface working in OS X. Hugo: try downloading it from TASCAM's site (tascam.com, of course). [alert admin]

Dantz Retrospect 5.0.205 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
since this is a UNIX command, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't copy resource forks of HFS files. I don't know this for a fact, but it's designed for UFS systems (w/o resource forks), and the man page doesn't mention anything about an HFS update. (Hate to clutter up the rating w/ chatter; mea culpa.) [alert admin]

Spinfree Audiofile 4.0.3 (Mac OS 9)
things out - I ran if for 1.5 yrs under 8.6 w/o any problems whatsoever. It's a standalone FileMaker database, so I'm not sure what was causing problems on bbum's setup. A great app, although tighter integration w/ the internet (currently it needs a separate program to look up titles) and greater ability to customize reports would improve it. And that's all supposed to be available in v. 5.0 (which is way overdue, at this point). [alert admin]

Audio CD Labeller 1.0.2 (Mac OS 9)
Apple never rolled this kind of funtionality into a System upgrade is ridiculous. This just makes your desktop more civilized. Download it and try it out for yourself. [alert admin]

The crash, by the way, happened with cocoAspell v. 1.3; it's possible v. 1.4 works fine, but there is no way to download it at the current time.
