HandBrake 0.9.1 (Mac OS X)

No letterbox/PSP support

There is no proper letterbox and no PSP exporting support. These two really hurt my reasons of using the app. [alert admin]

MAME OS X 0.118 (Mac OS X)

Port to 10.3.9 too please!

Come on man, please add a 10.3.9 version too! Not everyone uses 10.4.x. My husband won't upgrade his Mac because he has way too many pro peripheral that work only with 10.3.x so an upgrade is out of the question. At the same time, that's the only Mac we can play fast-enough MAME, so please consider creating a PPC 10.3.9 version too. Thanks! [alert admin]

VersionTracker Mobile 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Java application??

What is the freaking point of creating such a "service" when in reality you must install an application to load the information via GPRS/EDGE??? Why not create a special wap page that will WORK on ANY phone out there? I mean, take for example the J210i Sony Ericsson phone which does not come with Java in it (because it's a cheaper phone and SonyEricsson didn't wanna pay for its license to Sun). And yet, the phone comes with a capable WAP browser. In fact, despite mobile browser headaches and some incompatibilities, WAP rendering is more compatible than Java programs between phones! Also, creating WAP pages, should be piece of cake, given the fact that the RSS feed could be used to minimize GPRS costs and keeping the wap pages light. And creating a WAP page is far easier and requires fewer resources than a full blown java app that needs to be tested to a gazillion of devices -- that some are known to have buggy java stacks! I think that VersionTracker.com bought the PR crap from FreeRange Communications and used their "technology" instead of going the normal WAP route. I hope VersionTracker didn't have to pay money to FreeRange for this service. [alert admin]

Apple Aperture 1.0 (Mac OS X)

CoreImage Demo

This seems like a CoreImage demo rather than a really useful application. I mean, sure, it's kinda useful to have pictures to lay out next to each other and do some basic editing in them, but it's no Photoshop substitute, neither I think it really worths $500. Maybe $100 would be more logical for what it offers. [alert admin]

AbiWord 2.4 (Mac OS X)

Abiword's font quality sucks

There are three major problems with the 2.4 Abiword version for OSX: 1. SLOW. Backspacing and typing is seriously lagging on my 867 Mhz G4 Powerbook. 2. FONTS. They look terrible, with vector or 100% zoom modes. Check here: http://eugenia.co.uk/images/abiword.png 3. VISUAL ARTIFACTS. These artifacts below some fonts existed since the first Abiword versions, they are still not fixed. I can not recommend Abiword until these issues are fixed. In fact, Abiword should be clearly marked as beta at this point. [alert admin]

Gimp.app 2.2.8 (Mac OS X)

this version does not work here

This new version, 2.2.8 just doesn't work on my Tiger (installed on /Applications/ThirdParty/ folder). I don't know if I need to nuke any previous gimp settings or not, but after overwriting my old binary with the new one, the new one just doesn't run. It loads the first start-up screen, but without fonts or graphics, just a plain, grey splash screen. And then, nothing happens, except my cpu fan running faster and faster as the time goes by until I kill Gimp. Something is broken in the new version... [alert admin]

Camino 1.0a1 (Mac OS X)

SLOW Scrolling

What happened to this 1.0a1 version??? Camino is substantially SLOWER than the previous stable *or* unstable versions I tried over the past few months. I run on a Powerbook 867 Mhz with 640 MBs of RAM, and scrolling is just horrid (on pages with flash ads or without, e.g. news.com or osnews.com). Even Firefox --which we all know is not very optimized for the Mac-- scrolls faster than Camino 1.0a1. Even older, beta versions of Camino were not that slow on scrolling. [alert admin]

Nvu 0.50 (Mac OS X)

NVU for Mac is still very slow

The application is unbearably SLOW (867 Mhz G4 Powerbook here, just 1.5 years old). Firefox or Mozilla are not THAT slow on the same Mac. Nvu is. Also, hitting Apple+Q doesn't close the application completely. i had to kill the app in order to quit it. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 4.5 beta 2 (Mac OS X)

Irrelevant indeed

I will have to agree. Going with Safari's engine, makes it irrelevant, even if OmniWeb has 1-2 features that Safari as an application doesn't. [alert admin]

No letterbox/PSP support

I need automatic letterbox support for DVDs. I don't want cropping. I want to create black bars automatically for widescreen movies that are outputed for a 4:3 screen. For example, if the DVD resolution is 853x480 and I want to export in 320x240, I need the right amount of black bars to be added automatically without myself doing the calculations. Eugenia

CoreImage Demo

This is NOT true. PhotoshopCS can open RAW files just fine. And Photoshop is THE defacto standard in image editing, so I don't see the point of Aperture, more than being a slickier iPhoto. Useless for most photographers, really.

RE: this version does not work here

I nuked the old settings of the previous 2.2.x version, and now Gimp 2.2.8 loads correctly. This is a pretty big inconvenience IMO, Photoshop would have never ask the user to nuke his/her settings for a point release upgrade.
